I'd very much like to see the Fox back on the road. It doesn't have to be a concourse restoration job, just something that produces a useful little vehicle. They were never very common on the road - and would be interesting to get your impressions as to what Reliant got right and what they got wrong, after you've got it up and running again. And even in the state she is in, I think this is a cool little design.
@TheFurriestOne6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like fun! Electric would have been interesting, especially since so much has changed since the lead-acid battery age! But I enjoy a good petrol engine build too! (even though I've yet to complete (or start building) one for either of my VW Bugs)
@320ifq6 жыл бұрын
I think the main issue with the EV option is the lightweight nature of the fox would need substantial strengthening to deal with the extra weight. The London electricity board had a few sherpa vans converted to ev and they went quite well up to 50mph ....... See if there are any of those still around.
@HubNut6 жыл бұрын
Rough reckoning had the battery pack at 300kg, which just so happens to be the payload of a Fox. Plus there would be no exhaust, engine, fuel tank or cooling system.
@dodgydruid6 жыл бұрын
Driving wise, you will be pleasantly surprised as these cars being super super light have a lot of go in them and its not hard to get the 850cc engine to get close to the ton mark. The drive will feel like a 1960's sporty car, very much like a revvy Mini perhaps maybe a Triumph Herald or Vitesse for the 4 wheel feel. The steering shaft should be Triumph Herald fitting if you wanted an aftermarket steering wheel. You will note the lack of assisted servo braking so advised to leave a bit extra for braking but mine is all drums and stops on a sixpence if I need it to, steering will be very tight as you have a very short wheelbase cornering will be immense fun. Not really much tuning possible on the 850 engine, the most common mod is the inlet manifold polishing and opening out which allows for a smoother fuel transfer from the carb, I do believe Burton used to do road and race camshafts for the Reliant engine if you want stiffer performance, the SU carb is bulletproof but you can fit a 34ICH Weber from a Fiesta or Escort with no need to change jetting (can't remember which precise model it is) and will make for a very brisk engine with that on. If you really wanted some horses then a Ford Kent OHV will go into your more generous engine bay with some fettling and an adapter plate for the clutch and gearbox but plenty of people done that with the 3 wheelers and 4 wheeled Reliants and of course that Rialto you saw on the hillclimb that weekend has an insane engine setup in there and a Rover V8 can be made to fit if that took your fancy hehehe

Not many other options left then. Maybe what I suggested before; an electric engine set up from a milk/grocery light delivery van, or a forklift truck. But they are desperately slow, especially in the Welsh hills, with a very limited range and require a huge, backbreaking heavy battery, with an eight hr. minimal recharging time.

Exactly. I want to drive it in a practical manner. Petrol it is.

Go with a low-tech (early tech) solution on the EV conversion? The first conversion article I read was from a Mother Earth Magazine in the early 80's... when the magazine actually had credability. Guy used a jet engine starter as the main drive. Whack a load of lead-acid batteries in the back and get a controller for the type of electric motor chosen. There you go! (I kid, not that easy... but the solution does not have to be the latest tech if it is reasonable to sacrifice some of the driving range) Cheers, - Eddy

@HubNut6 жыл бұрын
I've rather cooled on the idea. Am considering other fleet members to electrify...
@GeorgeSPAMTindle6 жыл бұрын
For a low cost electric conversion project I suggest that you buy an old fork lift truck. You can use the mast to make a car-lift in your garage, drive the car's gearbox with the electric motor, and use the batteries and charger too. The wheels could be used with a plank of wood to make a trolley for rolling under cars with, and then weigh in the remaining parts for scrap. Film it all, edit it to 30, 45, or 60 minutes and sell it to Channel 5 and you'll probably be in profit at the end of it all.
@Robutube16 жыл бұрын
Such a simple plan - what could possibly go wrong? ;-)
@mfbfreak6 жыл бұрын
Yes... but no. Not worth the effort while you can get decent batteries and traction electronics for a reasonable price. Forklift batteries weigh between 500 and 1500kg. They're lead-acid batteries, usually. You need the full battery voltage to drive the motor, so you can't just take part of the cells. If you somehow manage to reinforce your suspension and shoehorn all the cells into the car, you end up with a electric car with the specs of a 1970s E-car. Charging takes a full day, range several dozen km at best.
@GeorgeSPAMTindle6 жыл бұрын
Though by stripping down an FLT he could have a car-lift in his garage, which is a bonus you don't get with other options. The solution for the batteries is to fit a tow-hitch and put the batteries in a trailer, maybe even put a generator in the trailer too and you can go far and wide. Remember that this is HubNut World and that all sensible options will be ignored if at all possible.
@mfbfreak6 жыл бұрын
I mean, you could.... But if we're going for a weird solution, i would kind of be tempted to scale it up, find a super low-revving marine diesel with exposed rocker arms and put everything in the back of a small box truck. Essentially a diesel-electric submarine concept. Something like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpiTo4uKYrKBgq8 Would sound super funny. Electric motor can be oversized, to be able to at the same time use the generated power and battery power when climbing a hill or something. Or, for low speed/inclination, run only on battery power.
@GeorgeSPAMTindle6 жыл бұрын
How will that help Ian to get a car-lift in his garage though? Have you seen his fleet? A car-lift is a necessity for him really.

I'm not sure that making an electric vehicle out of a plastic van that had a reputation for occasionally "interesting" electrical operation was the best idea, but it's a shame it won't happen. On the up-side, a Fox is rare enough to make an originally powered example an interesting project. I understand that Fox chassis generally seem to be a lot more rust resistant than those of their wheel-deficient brethren so hopefully that will be the case with this one...

I am pleased that it's going to get a replacement engine so it's going to be standard Hub nut likes standard and so do I but with all the carb problems you have why don't you try to source a lpg conversion kit or is that lpg supply not a local option. It's never really kicked off like it was supposed to but I think you can make it popular again and show the benefits of how clean it runs and the burning lpg doesn't make your oil go black We used to build basic lpg carbs on single cylinder engines to power a wind turbine to create electric charge for 110v supply for traffic light sets and designed to run 24/7 for at least two weeks on two gas bottles.. Wouldn't be sufficient. My aim with the Fox from the start was to have a fully usable car, easily able to cover distance. That's why the electricification was looking so pricey - enough batteries for decent range.

i had no idea you were wanting to build an EV, i have 4 factory EVs here of various ages but want to convert something, probably a Datsun! Looking at the prices of new controllers etc it will be probably a Leaf based conversion.

N12 Cherry Leaf hybrid would be fun. Apparently a few people are starting to pack LEAF mechanicals into older vehicles.

My forte is electronic design, I use leccy car batteries to run the systems on my workshop van too. So if you need and techy input that doesn't involve driving up too often then just ask :D . LiFePo4 runs everything i have, even my Chevanne :D

My biggest problem is my attention span. I manage about five minutes of research before my brain just gives up. I'm also utterly, utterly hopeless with numbers.

I'm not against this idea at all. At least I'd be free of the sodding belt drive!

I guess you got turned down when you mentioned the long extention lead? (foxes do stink normally) So...heres an idea, keep an eye open for a wrecked Prius and do an engine swap into the fox. If you make a mistake hooking it up,you can call it a Frius.... I 'll get my coat.
