some really nice sounds in this, you convinced me to order a kalimba. I meant to buy one ages ago after seeing heinbach using one but never got round to it (I'm gonna put it through mutable clouds which will no doubt sound great) you can buy them with a pickup already fitted . (and it's not much more expensive than one without the pickup) edit: an update, DON'T buy one with a pickup already fitted :) I took mine apart (because even through an amp at full volume nothing was coming out) the piezo mics in the thing were terrible quality. (3 little things about 1/2 inch across) so In the end I had to DIY it with a better quality mic.

Regarding piezo polarity: you dont have to pay any attention to it since the input of all amplifiers will have a capacitor in series to decouple or block the DC of the signal ;)

@spurioustransients5 жыл бұрын
I had a go at something very similar last year, although my kalimba wasn't as nice as yours, it was a cheap Chinese kit. I ran into the exact same problems that you had: the thickness of the wood where I wanted to mount my output jack (I ended up drilling a wider hole and using a tube style output which filled the gap nicely) and also I had to cut a hole into the back so as to get the pickup inside. On my finished article I found there was far too much handling noise being picked up when amplified. I realise you can turn this to your advantage and use the kalimba percussively, but it wasn't really what I wanted. I really want to experiment with a solidbody kalimba with magnetic guitar pickup(s) beneath the tines, although getting the right kind of pickup (or pickups) of the required dimension to fit neatly beneath the whole width could be a problem. (Might be worth looking at pickups designed for 5 or 6 string bass).
@JohnDoe-xx8yw4 жыл бұрын
If you can find them, I'd recommend probably using a blade style pickup made for an extended range guitar or bass. Since the poles of your standard pickups are lain out to correlate with the strings on the instrument, using a pole style pickup won't pick up each tine as evenly. Blade style pickups have a single magnet going from one end of the pickup to the other, used mostly for consistency in bending when it comes to guitars, but I think it could work. Finding an extended range blade pickup may be difficult, though. May just have to use multiple, but I dunno
