The natural comparison will be to Torqeedo as they have been at this for a while. Good to see other big companies getting into this. For anyone who has lived through several leaps in battery technology, just think about the difference in cordless tools from the old Lead Acid or NiCd days, to modern Lithium batteries. Now imagine the next leap or two past Lithium. We're not that far from batteries that can compete with a full tank of gas for range. This one would be fantastic for fresh water fishing on a small boat. Sometimes we take only a trolling motor if we're not going more than a couple miles from where we drop the boat in. This would be a nice step up over the trolling motor.

Calling a 750w motor a "7.5" might mislead people into believing it's 7.5hp equivalent. I actually clicked on this video under that misconception. Anyway, proprietary battery, so it's a non-starter with me. I'm sure it fits some people's needs.

Except that the standard international unit for “power” is watts or kilowatts. Not horsepower. Especially when you’re speaking in terms of electrical power. One horsepower is roughly 750 watts however in terms of “work done” a one horsepower electric motor will do much more than a one horsepower gas engine. So there is really no “immediate horsepower comparison” to be made. Hopefully that simplifies it for you.

I think there are some cool things about engines like that but I could see someone having a safety issue say if they were heading in to a strong sea trying to keep their front up then running out of battery, but I guess you would get to know the capacity a little better after owning it for a while.

What would be interesting is if they could implement power limits so you could set max throttle at say 100/75/50/25% so you can guarantee a certain range. It's all electronic so this seems like something easy to implement.

I'm eager to see the bigger electric outboards that would be comparable to a 40 or 50 hp 4 stroke. I live in southern Michigan and lakes and pontoon boats are everywhere around here and to have an electric motor on a pontoon with a solar charger would be so nice to have. Very few lakes have a gas pump on them and filling your tank with cans sucks

A sailboat tender is the target market for this. Gas or Petrol is not always easily available and cannot be made while at anchor, while electricity can be with solar or wind. The other positive is electric motors are very reliable and simple. Can't say that about small petrol engines living in poor environmental conditions. Another plus is the lack of noise my guess is it will be like an electric car once you have one you can't ever imagine not driving an electric car. this discussion reminds me of electric car comments 5 or 6 years ago.

So the 7.5 is only 1hp but it’ll have way larger power band and earlier torque than an i/c engine but for the price make your own! Even from radio controlled components that have huge power potential also for excellent run time lithium polymer batteries are cheap for the power density and amperage ability as well as the fun fire risks!

@tommy12345abc
@tommy12345abc Жыл бұрын
go ahead and show me a Tesla in flood that catches fire; the batteries are watertight and in-fact you should be able to find plenty of examples where you see floating Teslas using wheels as propellers. They won't do this indefinitely and will eventually sink but to push through deeper water where you lose traction - it'll do as a boat and survive. Try that with a combustion engine and then let me know what happens to one if you manage to flood it with water (hint: it'll be destroyed).

@@FishingMonthly I wish that would solve the problem. I own a sailboat and made the mistake going electric. Not enough solar and the 3.2kw lithium bank battery isn't near enough, I ended up buying a gas generator to charge the batteries. @@adrian3373 it depends on use. I have an epropulsion on my small Montgomery 17 sailboat. I have only ever needed to use it to get to and from the dock and in the few areas where sailing is not allowed. As a sailor, I have no issues running a 1/4 throttle for hours at a time, it's not much faster or slower than sailing.
@8180634
@8180634 Жыл бұрын
If you're in the middle of the ocean with this motor, lets assume you're on a sailboat (or in big big trouble if you're in a small boat). Most sailboats have windmills and/or solar panels. So really for a dingy on a sailing vessel, used to get back and forth to shore, I could see this being more ideal than a gas motor. Also there are a LOT of freshwater boats. When we fish in fresh sometimes we bring only the trolling motor if we're not going more than a couple miles from the launch, it's sooo much nicer to fish with electric than gas. This would be a great replacement for a big trolling motor for electric-only fishing.
