0% problems with my 2014 Mitsi PHEV in 230K miles (500K + km) It's still on its original traction 12 kWh battery I've owned it over 9 years - don't want to get rid of it - because it still gets me 14 miles to work and back every day for less than $2 on electric It's saved me a fortune & at weekend s it's great for towing big trailer caravan anywhere ( goes places even our Jeep gets stuck) But must turn ESP off when off road 😎👍

To me this is a much better experience. I have ridden motorcycles most of my life and my favourite bike was a touring motorcycle with an almost silent engine. I could hear birds, cicadas, the tyres, people talking and the world around me. This is a much more enjoyable than listening to a loud motor droning and moaning about. I can’t wait for usable EV off road vehicles to be a reality.

Pretty interesting. I like the idea of also rocking up at camp with a huge Powerstation ready to plug in to my caravan.

My Outlander PHEV is way better offroad than most soft-roaders due to the electric drive-train. Instant, controllable torque from a standstill and, as you say, you can hear what the tyres are doing. Of course it's limited by clearance and angles etc, but certainly not traction or power.

It’s unfortunate but Mitsubishi specifically warn in the manual against taking the PHEV Outlander off road. Mitsubishi also are renowned for stiffing customers with degraded batteries.

@@timmo42 Thanks for that bit of positivity Timmo 🙃 Also, funny how Mitsubishi Japan and USA, AND Australia have taken motoring journo's on offroad tracks (no, not rock-crawling, that would be ridiculous) and that it has a "Mud" mode 😁

@@adampoll4977 must be the newer outlanders. I will never buy another Mitsubishi after my experience with an Outlander PHEV.

With JLR going fully electric very soon, I believe they will use their expertise in Hybrid to offer a modular (removable) ICE motor as an accessory. A slightly underpowered unit that would extend range but be small enough to be lifted by one person. A defender or discovery with a 100kWh battery would be sufficient for a large majority of use cases, and for those overland trips purchase or borrow a range extender.

Great example of how good ev power delivery is with less wheel spin and lots of control compared to ICE vehicles. Will be amazing once they have a motor per axle or wheel with good traction control logic.

for p2 motor hybrid it's great offroad, when torque is enlarged by transmission transfer and diff final drive. for p3 or p4 motor and not having a switchable low gear, I thought there will be questions, things like the center diff problem and hill decent, even the wheel speed accelerate too rapid may break loose surface traction, observed from some byd bao5 and u8

PHEV is where I think the limit of practicality is in 4wding at the moment, though not much benefit (if at all on long distances). I’m looking forward to see how well these 48v battery assist Toyotas go. Other than complexity, I don’t see any downside.

I’m waiting for the IWD era, which will make things phenomenal, but you lose out on fun when everything can be done so easily and without effort.

I see it has a lot of neutral steer going up the innitial hill where the wheel looses traction. 😂 this has to be correct as you have stated and continue to state when a vehicle skids that it suffers under or over steer. So loss of traction in a straight line MUST be neutral steer! You have said that if you get something wrong, highlight it! So I am! Fundamentals do not change.so do not change names of fundamentals so they sound like it's a design issue when it's a driver issue.

Whether hybrid or BEV, electric traction is the superior form of traction. It's a matter of cost and design of vehicle.

It would be interesting to see if they can match lockers and at the same time allow easy turning and avoid downhill sliding.

It also matters how well the manufacturers set them up. My front and rear lockers have taken me farther than most electronic traction control system could follow on its own on most tracks.

There's offroad and there's offroad, that is obvious. But EVs are pretty capable. My wife drives a 408hp Volvo , demonstrated here

Where would you even start? 100 percent impractical off road, no range no lockers, will break easy. Electric vehicles are not for off roading ​@@L2SFBC

You’re hauling a generator to refuel it so just have a gas vehicle. The range towing is very short in what we have available here. What’s the plan when off roaders catch fire because it will happen? Those little fire extinguishers are useless. The last and biggest reason I won’t have one is no government is going to force me to.
