Neutral winching never seemed intuitive to me. Validating video. Makes sense to distribute the pulling power. That said i could imagine some scenario where someone might be in drive, rev, getting ahead of winch then a wheel slip occurs and creating shock load on winch. In other words, driving and especially reving could increase probability of that scenario. Of course, attention to the possibility will likely avert the possibility.

I have to angle my way into my favorite gas station if I don't it'll scrape (2022 Camaro). I drive a truck, sometimes I pull a drop deck trailer, I've scrapped the trailer before pulling into a customer lot, that's where I learned about this.

I wish these modern vehicles had a hand throttle like the old 4wds did . A throttle control like a iDrive could be programmed to function like a hand throttle , I did talk to a bloke from iDrive several years ago , he said they were working on it but nothing ever happened.

Robert, I am not a seasoned offroader, however it strikes me that a good addition to a test like this would be a laser thermometer on the winch motor. If you aren't holding anyone up maybe a few minutes rest part way up would let the winch and auto box cool down as well as to let the battery recover. Another excellent video.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC Күн бұрын
Yes, I've tried that before and there is a heat difference yes. You do want to keep your motor cool so it is less likely to fail and last longer.

Looked good, but what about in mud and clay? My concern would be that you get some grip, pull forward and then slide back, shock loading like you did on the downhill return. That risk of increased load is to high IMO. I would have double line pulled (to take the strain off the winch). Winching on flat (thick mud etc) I can see the real advantage.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC Күн бұрын
In thick mud and clay you aren't likely to be getting grip and sliding back. On a slippery hill the technique works, just listen to the winch motor, and leave the car in D as even then you'll get a benefit, with no chance of overrun.

Let me simplify 10 min of video by saying simply, you need to be on the gas at the apex of a turn in a 911. Otherwise you don't have weight on the back tires, meaning you won't have grip in the back. Watch the video again and see the first two times the driver got on the gas by the apex. The third time no gas, and spin. Done this myself a few times and it can be confusing when it happens since if you're not actively thinking about adding gas at the apex, one can easily forget and a spin will commence. While the driver tried to correct with the wheel, it doesn't help unless he also gets back on the gas at the same time.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC Күн бұрын
That's wrong. Consider this; on the way to the apex, or even just before, are you not turning and slowing down? Also consider the effect of engine braking vs friction brakes. This "power through the corner" business has its roots in reality, but has been over-simplified and over-repeated.

The winch work more efficiently when you increase revs as the alternator can help maintain the voltage of the battery.

Winching and Driving only came about because the electric winches of the day were not strong enough to pull the car by themselves. Although electric winch technology has progressed in leaps and bounds, there are still times when they struggle to overcome the resistance/loads placed on them. Back in the day when makes such as Landrover, Nissan and Toyota all offered Power Take Off winches, you did not see (or have to) driving with winches. Sadly, these prime winches are dying out and that is an industry blunder and, I believe a reflection on an industry out of touch with off-road driving.
@L2SFBC

Well, PTO winches often only worked in neutral, so there was that. Yes, overheating wasn't a problem, but the main thing here is reduction in recovery load = greater safety. That would work for PTOs as well.

Handy information to see how things work when winching. I wonder how long it takes to be rutted like that. If a dozer could flatten those popular tracks and an entry fee to cover it. Do tracks ever get repaired?

An old (mechanic pump diesel) car user manual tells that Neutral was for other cars winching, (better securing your car to a tree, rock, etc with a strap) or for winching yourself with a PTO (Land Cruiser BJ40 or pajero L040, for example) winch. Some revs helps to increase charging when winching ‘cos it’s a heavy current load for the battery and prevents exesive dreinage and premature failures. I have to apologize for my rusted english 😅

I'll add two further caveats to drive assist. Firstly, if you have a manual vehicle, make sure you don't burn your clutch out in the process; likewise if you have an automatic, make sure you don't overheat your transmission fluid although this is likely to take far longer. Secondly, I have encountered the scenario where any drive just causes the vehicle to sink further, making things even worse. Salt pans are notorious for this.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC Күн бұрын
Yes, it can be a problem at times. It is really only a problem if you go nuts and don't move. If you've moving, then you're working into fresh terrain all the time. Even with the car in D there may be no wheelspin, but the torque to the wheels still helps even if the wheels turn as fast as the car is winched. When doing kinetics we spin the wheels just before the rope goes tight, and that seems to work for us. Even with a dig-in, you need to trade that extra resistance for the reduction in pulling force.

Firstly thanks for making the effort to do this and the information presented it was very informative. For a given diameter the length of the contact patch will determine the amount the tyre drops. Wider tyres have shorter contact patches, therefore you can air down more and still have the same wall height. So they have more in reserve, you can air down by a good few psi and still have the same wheel clearance as the narrower tyre. I bet that extra few psi will improve offroad performance way more than any differences in width. One of the best ways to improve offroad performance is to fit offroad biased tyres, but typically this has a detrimental effect on wet road handling and particularly braking. Something I value greatly as my 4WD is also my family car, having a wider tyre should help according to this video? Narrower tyres allow you to fit a bigger tyre without rubbing and mods to the car, which is a great advantage IMHO. PS all my 4WD's have been stock except for fitting a set of AT's of a size similar to stock.

Sounds like they are doing what Ford does. Ford's F-150 axle capacity is 4.13 tons but the GVWR is 3.56 tons or below in North America. You can do a GVWR increase, but you pay more taxes. The difference is the Ford single cabs can have 1.5 tons payload. Will Ineos make a single cab chassis?

good video, as a newbe off reader using a 2018 Jimny, I didn't go up a steep rocky hill on the edge of a mountain cliff, since the path was tilted left quite a bit and was concerned about rolling to the side then over. Would installing sway bars keep the wheel more stable and to the ground EVEN on the left leaning angle to it wouldn't tip over as easily? Then I guess on a bumpier path it would be better off. I am assuming for road driving it would be better on, so I guess a quick disconnect would be good to chose for the different applications.

The LED light bar at the front of the Grenadier might well be sold as a work like but 99% of people will use is as a driving light so it will need to be made legally compliant. We know they won’t bother doing this so Ineos should just install it as such. I am fed up with wing blinded by Light Bars at night. So many lights now are non-compliant and not policed.

I believe a single cab or at least an extended cab should be an option, that way the unladen weight would be reduced so the payload increased, plus a longer bed would be available which is a nice option to have. Yes all the extra tooling and manufacturing complexity would increase cost but it would certainly broaden the buyer spectrum.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 4 күн бұрын
It would but it's also a commercial decision; development cost vs revenue.

The extended wheelbase on the quartermaster means the majority of the engineering has already been done. All you would need is an extra panel in the roof. Then you would have a long wheelbase wagon or a two seat troopy.
@apostolis2939
@apostolis2939 3 күн бұрын
@@L2SFBC I believe there is a market for a single cab quartermaster especially in the usa where off road campers that are based on pick ups are rather popular. Also in many markets, in europe especially, vehicles with payload greater than a ton are taxed less and exempt from some regulations. Maybe another solution for redused weight would be one taken from it's inspiration ,the old defender, the use of aluminum body panels.

What type of customer refuses a vehicle on the basis of a picnic table? Go to Bunnings, BCF, Anaconda, Tentworld and get one. 95% of buyers would most likely already have at least 3-4 camping/picnic tables amongst their gear.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 5 күн бұрын
Nobody. However the picnic table is better termed as a barn-door table, one that folds up and down on the inside of the rear door. That's an INEOS option, and there was, unsurprisingly, a large takeup which caught INEOS by surprise hence the delay. It is not a standalone table independent of the vehicle. There is also this aftermarket option, or many people make their own. Good discussion on payload, and it is important. However, it’s easy to miss the issue of suspension performance across that range. Suspension has to do more than hold a load off the ground. Most cars/SUVs have a payload less than 600kg because nobody has really figured out suspension that can deliver ride, handling, reliability, stability and safety over a greater range of load. Utes don’t have 1000kg because they have brilliant suspension, it’s because, as commercial workhorses, they are accepted to compromise in those areas - especially when they are unladen or at max gvm. Ineos aren’t prepared to accept those compromises and have delivered better performance over a pretty decent payload range.
@jonahfastre
@jonahfastre 5 күн бұрын
Air suspension is quite good at handeling across variable loads, but off-road it’s not that useful as it’s too stiff when you want ground clearance and maximum articulation.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 5 күн бұрын
I agree with the compromise but not with your assessment of payload. It is clear they targetted 1000kg for Grenadier based on early claims, this interview, and my forthcoming one with Oliver. The fact they could not deliver is because the car ended up heavier than planned, more like 2800kg not sub 2500kg, and there is a regulatory limit of 3500kg. The compromise they made was payload, not taking weight out and compromising robustness. I would and have argued that an overly robust vehicle with compromised payload is not a good tradeoff, and it's not like other 4x4s are breaking chassis or axles these days - Hilux anyone? Ranger? I would have preferred independent suspension and extra payload. However, Jim R decreed the car would have beam axles and be over-engineered, and it seems nobody wanted to argue the point.
@markelliott6105
@markelliott6105 5 күн бұрын
@@L2SFBC True. I think the 1000kg was a pipe dream to be honest. My point on range is that an unladen Hilux (and co.) don’t drive great with no load. They ride harshly and it doesn’t take much of a mid-bump corner to skip at the rear. The Grenadier isn’t a Bentley but is way ahead of the Ute brigade in this respect. Maybe the overrun on kerb weight was a blessing in disguise. It was a couple of hundred kilos like that old Ute saying, “Throw a few bags of cement in the back and she rides just fine.”😀
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 5 күн бұрын
The old utes rode better loaded because of your first point the suspension was too great a compromise over the load range. Nowadays we have parabolic leaf springs made of more ductile metal, progressive coils, better tyres, improved NVH etc etc etc so that's less of a problem, and payloads have become smaller as well. My view remains the Grenadier is under-payloaded and there should have been less of a focus on ultra-robustness and more on payload. There comes a point when adding more strength is pointless, and extra weight is a vicious circle the reverse of the Chapman ideals.
