Electric Predator Guards for Purple Martin Housing: Testing the Setup & Common Issues

These predator guards can be used to protect any poles on which you have mounted bird housing, including purple martins, bluebirds, tree swallows, etc.

So you have to have an electric fence to even make any of this work??? Or is there something I can buy and hook to the bird pole itself?

You have to have an electric fence charger to make the electric predator guard. You could attach the charger to the pole but would still need the ground rod and an insulated wire to connect the charger to the guard itself.

Don't worry about the actual livestock fence you see in the background in this video; that's not required. To make all of this work, you need to build the guard (reference video #1 and then #2 in this series), power it with a fence charger, and properly ground it. Then, you can test it as you see in this video. All required materials are listed and described in the videos.
