One thing not mentioned in the video is that EV’s are also taxed extra at registration renewal time. This makes up for lost gas tax. So while you don’t pay a tax for charging at home, it’s not like these cars are running around paying no road taxes at all. The cost of the tax varies by state. In my state the tax is figured for 20,000 miles of driving a year.

Good point. In VA, the annual highway use fee for EVs is currently $128.14. They also charge a fee for fuel efficient vehicles - anything that gets >25 mpg also pays more come registration time. Gotta pay for road upkeep somehow!

"never having to stop at a gas station again...." But we don't mind stopping at these charging stations, if we can find one that works, and waiting an hour to charge. Thank Gawd we don't have to pull into a gas station for 5 minutes to fill our tank for the same amount of money. And the carbon footprint made by the power stations generating our charging electricity, or the forever pollution from the battery manufacturing and disposal every 6 years (if we're lucky)....well, we just pretend not to know about that.

The sweet spot for EV ownership is being able to charge at home. We drive electric because it's dirt cheap. No green washing thinking we are saving the planet. That is just silly. I don't understand why you're so fired up about this?

I’ve gone on several road trips and it’s not that bad. Always free L1/L2 charging at the hotel, destination, RV campsite, whatever. And I’ll only need 1-2 short 15-20 minute charges along the way for up to 500 miles one way so finding an open L3 charger isn’t too bad. What they don’t tell people is many if not nearly all L3 are split between both pumps so if it’s one car only using one or two cars each getting half it’s not much difference in waiting if both vehicles actually can ask for full power.

Why are our taxes being used to build Tesla infrastructure? Doesn’t Elon have enough money?
@mikecooper03
@mikecooper03 15 сағат бұрын
For those that are unaware, fuel is taxed significantly and that is used for many things such as infrastructure maintenance. If we do genuinely move away from fossil fuels in cars, that tax system no longer works so something else needs to be created to tax for the use of roads (and maintain them) - it actually makes sense for those that use trhe roads most to pay the most for their upkeep, this is how it works now for fossil fuel cars. Gasoline cars get taxed for road use now as they are proportionally taxed for the fuel to travel over those roads. EVs are almost in a golden age right now as they aren't paying their proportional tax for road use. Mark my words - there will be a road use tax eventually for EVs that will work by uploading your mileage somewhere so it can be taxed similar to how gas cars get taxed for road use.

I’m happy to pay a tax on my EV charging. Fast charging is for road trips and people without a place to charge at home. Home charging especially at night is sooo much cheaper. Closing in on 250k miles of EV only driving and the experience is awesome. Only on message boards or from people who never owned one do I hear of all these problems. If you want to pay a lot in maintenance and not have the ability of energy independence (solar and home charging) then use ICE cars. We can all live together. Just like horses and model T.

ALL our charging stations in Canada are on line and usable, BUT if they're not Hydro they can charge anything they want. Tesla chargers are 2.5 times the Hydro, and in additon, a lot of chargers are very slow (all the free ones). Some are so bad you'd have to camp there for a day and a half to get your 80%. Maybe. The chargers at the highway gas statioins (Petro-Canada) are fast, and you pay three times the money for that.

Depends on how you drive. I never spend time waiting for my car to charge, I just do it at home. Takes a few seconds once a week and that’s it. The car charges while I sleep. It has saved me a ton of time at the pump. If someone has to publicly charge or drives long distances all the time, waiting 15 minutes for it to charge all the time would definitely be annoying. An EV wouldn’t be for them. EV’s definitely aren’t for everyone. I rarely drive over 250 miles a day, so I almost never publicly charge and it’s worked great for me.

I got an EV and I have home solar. It made sense for me. I just don’t like the charge times for road trips. With my gas car, I can go 3-4 hours and stop ~15. With my EV it’s 2-3 hours for 20-25 minutes. Not great for a fast paced traveler like me, but I love waking up to a charged car every morning for the normal 95% of driving I do.

Wasn't long before the government and electric companies got wise to people getting free transportation. NJ just instituted a new "registration fee" for EV vehicles per year which might as well be a fine at this point given how expensive it is, and the local utilities are putting an end to credits for solar power production from homes that put back into the grid.
@hugegamer5988
@hugegamer5988 12 сағат бұрын
Here in Minnesota we also have an expensive registration fee of a couple hundred dollars on new EV, however I consistently pay 1/3 the fuel cost per mile saving me more than a thousand each year even considering the tax. Also I’ve got more acceleration than 97% of vehicles on the road, with completely independent front and rear drive systems something you have to pay a premium price for in a gas vehicle and it still won’t give the level of control electrics have.

Wisconsin gets 75% of its commercial power from natural gas and coal. So you're trading up gas stations with great lighting and plenty of public around for less populated parking lots sitting like ducks for long periods of time to buy coal/LNG fuel instead of oil.

As batteries become cheaper, EV have been approaching gas vehicle sizes. Soon it will be cheaper to purchase and far cheaper to own an EV than gas and only rich eccentrics will still have gas cars. Internal combustion is the devils Rube Goldberg machine. Electric is extremely simple, far more efficient, has far higher power and torque density in both weight and volume and is so very very much more controllable you can change torque thousands of times faster than gas, yet even put spent fuel back in the tank or even just get towed while breaking to fast charge and EV even those without L3 charging.

Never have to visit a gas station again, feels great. Says the old lady. That's like never have to walk again if you cut your legs off. The amount of time waiting and charging at public charging stations can be a lot longer than visiting gas stations. In that sense road trips with EVs always take longer and taking planning. EV is great for in town trips and if the owner has a dedicated charging spot at home.

@@hugegamer5988 dude... do you mean waiting for your turn to charge? Often there is wait. On holidays or in LA/SF busy areas often there were lines to wait. Although the wait shouldn't be long. But there is no denying that charging time is longer than refueling. The number of gas stations also easily out number superchargers. There is no point to argue which one is better. You drive what you want. But people don't have to pick a very specific advantage and ignore all the disadvantages.
