Tesla makes their battery packs in Nevada, and assemble the cars in California. As well, they DON'T make money on them, since their income statement doesn't include cost of support parts and service, which is sizable. Everyone is losing money on EVs, because the public is unwilling to pay what these things ACTUALLY cost to make. For that kind of money, you can get a higher spec brand new ICEV with better quality and reliability and service support.

Retrospective comment. Yeah I like the more tech/industry focus on this channel. One of the big problems, as well, with large scale industrial investment in battery production is future proofing the technology of the whole thing. I've had a serious geek look into future battery/supercapacitors and there are soooo many high potential improved technologies out there, some of which appear almost "production ready", it's confusing and dangerous from an investment perspective. You'd feel pretty bad if you stumped up 1 billion for a Li-Ion battery plant only to have some new tech come along which is cheaper, 6X more energy dense and can be recharged in 10 minutes.

I think there is some marketing you are missing here tho. Companies like to say how much they are losing on these cars, as they can keep the prices higher and manage distribution while the costs drop due to economies of scale. But it doesn't mean they are actually losing as much as they claim they are. Case in point, over 6 months ago, UBS did a teardown and said it looked like the cost to build a Bolt was $28,700 USD. That should only be coming down as they make more of them. I think the Ampera-e / GM problems are about lots more than just price of the car. Good start chap, like the approach and being more topic focused. It would be good to reference you data points (articles etc), even if it is just a URL. The industry and market stuff is important, and you can refer to it from your main vlog for people (like me) who like to research it and understand the detail that you can get into more on this channel :-) E.G. Tesla right now has the long range (proper) EV market ‘sewn up’, but in the next few years this will change as the established players start bringing product too market. This will have an effect on Tesla and ist bottom line (it has too as economics is supply vs. demand). And the big players like VW & Toyota can afford to subsidise/run at a loss in order to gain market share.

You plan to have enough conceptual overlap that my personal recommendation would be to put both types of videos on one channel, but then separate out this "special" content with a title prefix in all caps--like write "EV IN DEPTH:" or "GEEK OUT EV:" before the title. This way you don't dilute your subscriber base, and yet people can still focus on the videos they're interested in.

Valid points, I quite like watching other things too on your volg (although a skateboarder I will never be). I mentioned on your other channel that I suspect the Zoe has a huge waiting list because they probably lose on each unit sold and are limiting production (I still don't understand why they give such high discounts if they can sell them so easily but I will admit I told the Salesman I wasn't paying £24k for one as soon as I got out of the test drive so maybe they have found the price they will sell at by applying discount until people bite).

I like the new channel. I'm a bit of an EV junkie right now, even though I don't own one (but definitely in the future). I've been watching your daily vlog for about 8 months now and I really enjoy that. Nice intro on this one with the sunglasses. I wonder about how much Tesla will make on the model 3 sales but they must be making profits on the model S and X sales. I don't know if it would be enough to offset any losses on the model 3 however. You are right though in that the volume cost of batteries will eventually drop which should push these cars for the unwashed masses (Ampera, model 3, etc.) into profitability in time. It just depends on how fast the clock is ticking on some of these cars.
