3000 watts! Holy mackerel an electric bicycle is 250 watts and can haul a 220 lb man . Now I understand the expense of this motor $350 for super power. Great build and video series . Much needed and appreciated.

We just did what my friend Karl suggested. It's nice to have it overpowered so it can do all the pulling if we want, or just be lightly used when we want that.

What a great tool! Just one thing: you need to close up that wire bundle near the motor. The way it is open, it is going to send water right down into that expensive motor. You can use silicon or a waterproofing wrap tape. Doing either will also help protect the small wires from chaffing as well as damage from things being dropped. This is based upon 30 years experience in aerospace electrical.

I love the idea of this. I think, were I building this thing, it would take a while longer to get it done. I don't have all of the nifty connectors, and electronic stuff to get it to work. But... I will keep this in mind for future winter tinkering.

Probably don't need as burly a motor, so maybe you could find a cheaper way to make this work with other resources.

@@edibleacres My lower powered, lesser-priced Jockey Wheel Electric Power Trailer Mover suggestion (from early April 2020) may be worthy for consideration? These pieces of kit sell for $299 - $339 in Oz, but should be somewhat cheaped in the US.

If I had a motorized wheelbarrow I wouldn't get any exercise! lol If I was still 4 or 5 years old I'd definitely want to check out the business end of that machine , keeping curious kids away from 80 volts and an open chain would be the hardest part of that installation.

@brianwhite95555 жыл бұрын
Could put a small, detachable plow on the front, move snow in the winter. Might need a tire chain, but you could also put weight in the bucket for added traction. Two wheels on the back legs would raise the handles to a convenient height, and keep your snow plow at the proper angle & height. I wonder if it would haul(drag) small logs for you? Could be a back saver.
@edibleacres5 жыл бұрын
Interesting additional uses... I like the plow idea!
@johnklumpp79014 жыл бұрын
I see that you may need castoring wheels if they are to be attached to 'the back legs'. You require some steering capacity for a snow plow. Brian, maybe choose a Worxs Aerocart (with snow plow attachment) for your suggested project, although its spaced dual wheels may be challenging to convert to electric power?

That I don't know since it is electric.

I feel that it would not be very difficult to convert a good wheelbarrow to electric power by using the motor, battery, wheel plus drive, and controller taken from a Jockey Wheel Electric Power Trailer Mover - although the result may be slow and slightly hampered by the common 8"/20cm wheel size. This would require the existing trailer attachment gear to be firmly mounted to the wheelbarrow's axle mount region. This sort of build could be made for $350 - $400, plus bolts etc.

I want to mount a motor to a TWO wheeled cart. What is the problem with TWO wheels vs ONE Wheel. Could it be something about the torque needed to move two wheels vs. one wheel. What can you tell me?
@edibleacres5 жыл бұрын
I don't know what to offer to you for information. Our only experience is with the one wheel, which works quite nicely!
@johnklumpp79014 жыл бұрын
So, to turn corners either means you need a differential, or you power one wheel only. A Ural 2WD Sidecar Combination cannot be steered (without great difficulty) with Two-wheel Drive engaged while on firm tarmac. But if the two wheels are quite close (side-by-side) like in a four wheel model 1950s BMW Isetta micro car, then powering both wheels without a differential just may be feasible.

I would recommend a hub motor, for simplicity. You can buy a wheelbarrow hub motor on AliExpress. I have some chain driven ebikes, and the chain tensioning is problematic long term. Both great ideas, and something we could add on later... The challenge is that this wheelbarrow has to navigate really tight places at times, so we left the structure as 'default' for now beyond the power and can always add in sled skis, adjustable wheels, etc. as time allows. Thanks for the feedback!

I have 3 carts on my tiny homestead: a 1-wheel shallow wheelbarrow (about 40 years old) good for tight spots and lighter loads, a 2-wheel contractor's wheelbarrow (about 25 years old) for bigger jobs, and a huge 2-wheel cart (about 3 years old) that I can lug hay bales, compost or wood chips in. They would all benefit from motorization as I am past my prime and live on a hilly property, but they each function differently and are used for different types of jobs.
