Brilliant clear summary as always Dave. I’ve hovered on the edge of joining a CPS having retrained for domestic work following retirement from a long career in aerospace electrical systems. After 18 months of gaining experience on the tools, documenting my work, and continued professional development activity I approached a scheme provider. I was told my level 2 test and inspection qualification was now inadequate and I now required level 3. This adds a further £900 of training plus the c. £500 annual membership fee. If you’re smart about it, there is plenty of non-notifiable work for a semi-retired conscientious bloke like me, so the Competent Persons Scams can ……. do one. Thanks for your work that helps my continued professional development, I really like your Old School style.

Well the Tories keep saying they are going to roll back the red tape maybe they can have a look at the electrical industry. I had a spark do some work for me and have seen other Sparky's work at work and for all the schemes and paperwork I'd suggest a clued up DIY will do a better job just to "be on the safe side" and than a professional who's on the clock.

@@TheWebstaff Fair point. The danger is always with those who “don’t know what they ‘don’t know’” but plough on regardless. Poor workmanship backed up by ‘made up’ test results on an official looking form will fool unskilled people every time. A DIY person will struggle to make head or tail of the wiring regulations, although NAPIT have produced some more readable guidance that incorporates the BS7671 spaghetti into a more practical guide. Our Government has far bigger issues to address than this.

Mike, you would be surprised how many competent and skilled sparkies there are out there that only do non-notifiable work. Most domestic Minor Works, Industrial work, Commercial, shops, hotels etc. none of which need notifying. I know a few personally and they make a very, very good living. I know one who makes enough to keep his retirement hobbies in full flow and he only works Tues to Thurs. Go for it. Dave.

That's really very informative. So if I believe I have the skills and knowledge to do a particular piece of work at home, I can do so if I apply and then have it checked afterwards?

Depending on the complexity of the job, a lot of it is down to experience and competence.
