We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

I really hate to chime in, but here I go. I used to install sprinkler systems in Arizona, I have dug in dirt just like that. It always works better if you stand in the trenche and chip towards your legs. Instead of the opposite. It puts you lower so you don't have to swing the pick below the elevation that you are standing at. It's also easier to chip away from the mass or high ground, instead of swinging the pick or "maddox" into the mass or high ground. I hate it when people critique your work, so I'm sorry. I just want to help you.☮️. I LOVE WHAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING.☮️

You know. Since Jess loves painting, and whatnot, trace your wires before you finish the walls. Then let Jess draw/paint some sort of pattern that follows the wires you have, this way you know exactly where the wires are at, and you also get what could be an interesting cool design that follows the wires!

Yeah I was thinking it would be better if he followed more logical and straight lines for location purposes, but I understand he was trying to use the crevices but he didn’t do that every time so I’m not sure he had to at all.

hey Jim ..a suggestion, try facing the other direction (away from what youve dug) when swinging your pick youre pulling the earth into an already made weak point of your trench as opposed to trying to break away the earth from its compacted STRONG POINT.

Yup I cheat when running wires , I’ll put the wire in the conduit as I go , then glue 1 one section at a time . That& alway go way bigger on the conduit than you think you need . We all learn the more we do it . Don’t be shy with that wire lube , just fill up the conduit from the side your feeding wires . Haven’t finished watching, but if you got all those wires thru that conduit, your my hero Jim . You alway do surprise me in your work & inventions . Getting closer yall !!!!

I'm a big fan and a fellow desert worker. One of my favorite ways to move earth is to use a HAND TRUCK with a 5 GALLON BUCKET because you can roll the bucket in and out of holes and ditches, and with the hand truck, the center of gravity is lower than a wheel barrel or wagon. I hope my comment is helpful. 🙏🙏 Thank you for sharing all the videos. I know it takes a lot of time to share stuff on KZbin because I have my own channel also. I hope you like it if you have time. 😊

I have two words for you...back brace! I have had back problems for years (degenerative disc). It's easy to forget, and not use the brace, but I have finally gotten in my head that if I'm doing heavy lifting, or digging, or even sweeping (which is one of the things my doctor warned me about), it will save your back, especially as we get older. It's just a thought 😏 ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️

Its So Hot Out Side 🔥 It took 3 days at 2 hours a day, in the mornings, 8 am to 10 am, and 22 bags of cement to make 3 ramp around the house! 👍 I need them for my Yard Carts, Lawn mowers, and 4x4 to park next to my house. Its got a roof around with a 10' patio around the house. Its nice to BBQ out side in any kind of weather! 👌To walk around the house in bad weather to > I DO LOVE IT ❤

I thought the same thing. Went back and saw that this is a combination video of 3 previous to make it all in 1. Goes better with their newer format of single projects per video instead of haphazard back and forth project updates. I'm honestly fine with either, although the daunting length of this one is a bit much for my taste. Although, I would watch it if I hadn't watched the 3 parts already.

I've been doing electrical for many years, some with professionals. I always run the wire in the conduit as I go. The minute I saw what you were trying to pull through there I knew there was no way to do it. You can if you just tape all that wire together before hand for the whole length you need every couple feet or so and just feed the conduit over the wire one pipe or elbow at a time. I was surprised you even got that fish tape through there honestly. You probably could have pulled two of those #10s through there or 3 but, due to the corners, as you say, the friction just gets nuts ! Just in case anyone else is listening here. You actually are very good at what you're doing bro ! Keep it up ! Sorry for the little delay there. Kudos on doing your own home ! I tried it once for someone else and built all the walls 1/2" too high and the inspector said to shorten all the walls in the house so the trusses are free to move. I gave up. They got someone else to finish it. I wasn't charging anything close to scale so, if I'd been charging what I make today, which is still low ($50 an hour), maybe I'd have just sawzalled the trusses off at the plates and added a half inch ply plate on the perimeter walls but I did not think of it. The right move would have been to do that and not tell the owners what the inspector said ! All I heard from them after sharing the results of the inspection was a string of endless swear words. Good experience building a home though. 3 bedroom house but one level and on a slab.

I'm glad that you didn't put your electric box downstairs in your bedroom. No one should put their electric box in a bedroom. Electric boxes emit low levels of radiation, this is something you can confirm with a quick google search. It's a good idea to place the electric box in a room that you spend less time in, like a garage or utility room. Having it in a bedroom is a no-no because we all spend about 1/3 or so of our day in the bedroom, some people spend more time that that in a bedroom. Spending too much time in close proximity to an electric box can cause a lot of health problems, including cancer. BUT with all that said I love it that you finally got electricity to the dome and can't wait to see you guys get more completely so you can live in there. You guys are awesome.

A future idea, instead of using a fish tape on a long run. You can use twine with a puff ball on the end or cloth. You then use a shop vacuum to suck it through your pipe. Connect to your wires and pull back through. A lot easier than pushing a fish tape. Hope it helps you in the future. Love your build. My wife and I lived off grid for 10 years in Washington state.❤

That smile is priceless. It makes me wonder if God smiled like that on the 7th day, when the animals woke up, the waterfalls poured, man plucked a handful of grapes and sat in the shade and the wind blew. The sun came up and was on, and the moon was properly lit. God smiled big and said " It works".
