Honda is also being disrupted in their motorcycle business as Chinese motorcycles and scooters, both ICE and Electric sales are taking off around the world. If Honda loses the motorcycle and scooter business they are complete toast.

Maybe some of the directors had nostalgia with the Akai brand so they bought it eventhough they have no use for the brand. Nissan is THE car brand for the Japanese. 'Sam', you should clarify that this is Mitsubishi's car manufacturing division that is involved in this. The Mitsubishi company is a pretty large, diverse corporation, the automobile business is just a small part of it.

Hi Electric Viking. I've just finished reading Wolfgang Munchau's new book, 'Kaput: The End of the German Miracle'. It's an impressive book, well written & well researched. He talks a lot about the big German car manufacturers. It was only published 4 weeks ago, but keep an eye out for it, it's well worth a look.👍 Edit: The author also did a bunch of interviews promoting Kaput. I watched a few & my fav was on Unherd last month with Freddy. It's on YT. If anyone's too busy for the book, I'd recommend that interview instead.

I only know what I observe from my vantage point in the US. Families are putting off car purchases because of price. Upper middle and upper class are still buying as normal but middle class has dropped out. Affordability looks like the culprit.

@@victoriaguthrie8772 A little different. Japan produces better engines than the Brits at the time. So when they won they thought it was because of their superior craftmanship (which is true.) Nowadays, Japanese cars still have an edge on craftmanships. The Chinese can't actually compete. They created new demands. It's not motor cycle vs motor cycle, it's film cameras vs digital cameras. Most people still buy ICE cars and most of them still buy Japanese brands, not Chinese. EV is a different category where the Chinese is now dominating. But in the Japanese is not doomed. They have the capability to make better EVs, just perhaps not now. It does look bleak right now for EVs, but in the future, who knows.

@@ouethojlkjn Like I said, for now most people still buy ICE cars, and they still buy Japanese brands mostly. That's why I said this is more like film cameras vs digital cameras. Eventually most people buy digital cameras and no one want film cameras. Yet Fujifilm, a brand with "film" in it's very name, survived and now became one of the big brands of digital cameras... thanks to their unexpectedly super popular instant FILM camera line. The Japanese car manufacturers is not doomed. They just need to survive for now, that's why they're merging... just to survive. Maybe in the future they can rebuild again.

Hard to make spare parts, hard to find body parts for, hard to repair etc. Yup ice vehicles will be near worthless as a whole by 2032 or even sooner!

The oil lobby had it too good for too long. At least there are signs of some genuine healthy competition emerging by way of renewables. Credit goes to Tesla the pioneer, who took on the challenge and made it work. Fortunately, the US government too supported the initiative, similar to what they did for the proliferation of social media, space and nano technology.

they cover the niche of ugly cars now. the point is, it does not make sense anymore to produce that many different combustion engine variants. within three companies they can throw out some of the combustion engines and increase the volume of the engines that are left. that results in huge cost savings. this can be done with other parts as well.

I seem to remember the Nissan skyline GTR was a classic. A massive seller here in the UK is the ghastly Nissan Kashkai. Hardly a classic but it sure is popular. It is also the most polluting car in the UK.

I was due to start work at rhe aesc gigafactory being built in sunderland to supply nissan in march/april was looking forward to it but thanks to this video i think i will stay at my current job which is dayshift only for 500 pound a week nothing to some people but in uk today thats decent pay for dayshift only think its better to stay safe than sorry later down the line anyways cheers sam !!

I've been an EV fan for 35 years and I've owned my EV for 2 years but I wonder how the recession and European war has contributed to the situation that these companies have found themselves in. EV take over seemed obvious in the 90s after doing my EV conversion. 35 years later we are in fantastic rollover of technology times

They are all being caught by the same problem as far as I can see. When money was cheap and interest rates were at or below zero they could do what they like and not worry. I think they just simply failed to spot Tesla for what it was. Exactly the same with IBM and Microsoft.. and then Microsoft failed to spot Apple. They just think they’re brilliant and no one else could be better. Add in free unlimited money and it’s party time. Of course until the music stops playing and the bar Bill arrives.

Honda still makes great cars. They have time and make some very good hybrid cars. I think they will continue their partnership with GM on electric cars and see if they can be profitable on their own or with the Aria. Right now all car makers except Tesla and BYD lose money on EVs so I don’t think Honda regrets being slow to the market.

Sometimes that's the only thing that needs to be done. Kodak failed hard when they hesitate to pursue digital cameras. Yet, they are still here now, just not making cameras anymore. Fujifilm which has "film" in it's name is pretty much DoA when cameras turn digital, yet here they are, still producing digital cameras thanks to their highly popular instant FIlM camera. Sometimes a company just need to survive and not crumbles. Then they might be able to rebuild again.

I've put 200,750 miles on a V6 Altima, 55,000 on a Murano, my sister has put 250,000+ on two Altimas, all with zero transmission maintenance, and zero problems. Transmission fluid isn't engine oil, and synthetic transmission fluid can have 500,000 mile recommended intervals. The stupidest thing Nissan has done with that cvt is to make it pretend to be a geared transmission, torque loads are highest during shifts, and it makes the vehicle slower and less efficient. And you can't turn it off.

Recommended atf change is 60,000 not 500,000 miles. Given Nissans known CVT issues, a better recommendation is 30,000 miles for both atf and filter. For heavier load usage even go to 15,000 miles. Also, some models and years knowledgeable techs recommend installing an additional atf cooler. Good luck. I hope they last a long time.

You seem to be a very lucky person. Good for you. I don't know any person who owned a CVT Nissan without having expensive and annoying transmission issues. I can understand Nissan's decision to implement those "artificial gears". Driving a CVT car is an absolute nightmare for me. I cannot get rid of the feeling that the clutches in the gearbox are slipping. It is, of course, very stupid that you aren't able to disable those "gears".

I bought a used 2015 Altima with over 220000 miles that was fleet maintained and it seems to be doing fine. I 'm not a lead foot which I assume contributes to stressing the transmission. My biggest complaint is the OEM headlight defect that I can't get fixed and didn't know about because it was settled while I'm didn't own the car by a private class action suit that didn't involve the DoT or NHTSA so there is no official recall. This affects every Altima model sold 2013-2017 and can be a serious safety issue

However- there is another factor not far down the line to consider: the likely, and fairly imminent implosion of the Chinese economy due to their real estate crisis, and other factors, such as de-globalisation. The Western automotive brands survived before the Chinese economic miracle, and, some will survive in scaled down form I’m sure. US protectionist policies will also hamper Chinese exports…

EV's market impacts are essentially only temporary political and Chinese price war based. Both while massive issues will settle down. Chinese Ev's have massive issues in both products and companies, yet to surface to the general public but already known and visible to many. Politics and policies of nations around Ev's are volatile and also have massive issues. Just like Chinese Ev's issues this is yet to fully surface to the general public but already known and visible to many. Once these come out, the price war settles, the political landscape settles the storm hitting the car market will settle. I was wondering if European carmakers can only survive now if they merged with Chinese EV companies. Just imagine VW or Mercedes merging with BYD. Then BYD could help them develop an affordable EV, and BYD would get access to a quality brand name with a huge market. It would be a win-win for both companies, no? If they don't merge, China will probably buy them anyway in a few years from now. And nobody in Europe is going to like that. So I say merge now, and work with China instead of fighting them.

Yes, I think the most likely scenario over the next couple of years will be EU, US, & Japan carmakers rebranding Chinese "sleds" or complete cars. CATL's sled is the guts of an EV, that you can just slap your own chassis on top of. It's an admission that we can't make good EVs on our own, but it's business realism.

They didnt want to make changes to existing product. Got surpassed by competition that made upgrades. When I was looking for an EV i shopped for Bolt and nissan leaf . (pre tax credit 7500) I found the Bolt ok. but I loved the leaf. It felt more high quality and I would have bought it. But I had to wait a year or two. forward to 2022/3 I test drove new Bolt EUV. No longer feels like crap. nice leather. Nice BIG nav screen. ton of room. 250 miles. No brainer I bought that over a 210 mile leaf that cost more. less miles.

@@BarryObaminable We have a 150 mile Leaf, 2022, bought used and paid a total of $13K. It's not the best EV on the road these days, but we absolutely love it. So quiet and fast, beautiful styling, lots of smart features. My next EV will be 400 miles or more (hopefully) but for now, this is the most fun I've had in a car since my little Civic hatchback stickshift. The Ariya was supposed to replace the Leaf, but no one's buying it; too expensive, under-featured. But people who own it do say they love the car, so I don't know what's going on. All I know is, when we were at the Nissan dealer shopping for a Leaf, I said to a sales guy "So, that's the new Ariya?" and he just nodded and grunted. They seemed almost embarrassed. I guess it's not selling.

Don't care for Nissan that much, but seeing Honda in this situation breaks my heart, I grew up driving Civic in my late teens early twenties, tinkering and ricing my Civics used to be a hobby. But Honda has been in doldrums for decades and have not been able to get out of the rut when they still had a brand name recognition and market share around the world. Now, I think it's a bit late. As efficient as Japanese car makers could ever be, it would be difficult to compete with China on price points, scale and volumes.

You would need to understand how China works to answer this. Any industry that the central govt decides as being strategic for their long term goals will get unlimited financial support. Electric Viking seems to think the Chinese market is the end all to the global automotive industry. It is a market that required Western manufacturers to turnover technology to participate and the Yuan is a non floating currency. While Chinese auto market has large volume, the unit revenue is small compared to the US or Europe. I am curious how the reliability, durability, and safety of these Chinese autos.
