I have driven both the Ora and the MG4 and the MG4 is a much better all-round car although neither are great they are both just OK for the new discounted prices which reflects more accurately what these cars should have been priced at in the first place. There is no Ora in Australia for $15k USD ($23,600 AUD) new and far fewer people care about V2x than you think. The $26,990 price you see in WA is for 2022 and 2023 manufactured unsold but in most cases sub 100km, dealer demonstrators - not a "new" car in the strictest sense. You are seeing this because GWM vastly over-estimated demand for this car in Australia and had to stop importing new ones over a year ago - pricing reflects the need to get rid of 2 year old and in some cases cars that are about to be 3 years old in a couple of weeks. All Oras in Australia are August 2023 or earlier manufactured dates ( yes even the configure your car new from the website cars you will get an August 2023 or earlier manufactred car), many sat in holding yards for over a year before getting compliance plates because of the excess supply. GWM has confirmed there are no plans to bring in 2024 or 2025 manufactured models - these are effectively in end-of-model excess inventory clearout mode.

One thing that's overlooked about EVs is that if there is a wider war in the ME or even perhaps in Europe, as we import all our petrol and oil in Australia petrol will be expensive and rationed. Having an EV is a good insurance policy.....there will be a massive scramble to buy EVs in that event.

I am happy but the amount of export energy I'm sending back to the grid is out of control. So I was actually thinking of a Nissan Leaf as a second car but the Ora looks like a much better choice for only a little more money. I am a retired Energy Consultant and the V2G has been around for a while but as you say only recently approved for use in OZ but the chargers have always been the achillies heal I hope that Amibox and Similar is going to export to OZ, there is another retailer selling a similar unit out of VIC but also similar money. Why on earth would you send your energy back to the Energy Retail Vultures to make a 600% profit off the energy you produced. Fill up the car's battery so you can drive locally without worries and then sell the excess back to the Grid.

That's the catch. The $8K for the box! Why so expensive?. In California you can't get an on-line system that is bigger than the home power usage, I think it's like 80% of usage, to get a solar system like you have would require we go off-line off-grid, I was able to cheat the system by using tons of power running my servers in my apartment then when I bought a house I had years of high power usage history and bills so I could then cover my entire small roof with solar and in fact they had to not use one panel because a pipe was in the way, so I'm 1 panel short of having 100% legal coverage on my roof (have to leave room for walking around them in case of fire) I have 36 panels 9KW with a single 7.5 KW inverter (it's fine because all the panels don't get full sun at the same time most of the time, it might have hit 100% a few times the first summer but not since, due to lack of rain and living in range of forest fire smoke and two oil refineries.

I have a MG 4 Essence 64. It has V2L (vehicle to load) & if you buy the MG V2L cable will only deliver 10 amps of AC power. The cars inverter though can deliver 32 amps of AC power which at 230 volts is 7.4 kW. This is adequate for home use unless you are using an electric oven and cooktop flat out at the same time along with an old fashioned immersion electric water heater. So to enable the MG4 to be able to provide power to the home (V2H) or to the grid (V2G) you just need a type 2 cable and the connections to your distribution board with the appropriate V2H or V2G software. The GWM Ora can charge or discharge at 11kW only if you have 3 phase power, otherwise the maximum is 7.4kW. The majority of homes have single phase supply & getting an additional 2 phases installed is very expensive. The original Oras did not have V2L capability

The biggest hurdle to vehicle to grid (V2G) is the safety of electrical contractors. When there is a fault on the grid it is easily isolated so that it is safe to work on. However if there are multiple batteries feeding into the grid then it is still live even when the primary generators are disconnected.
@politics10215 сағат бұрын

Interesting. Large solar panel system + smallish house battery + EV with V2G = no more fuel costs, low car service costs, and probably make some money selling electricity. A interest only loan of $60K would cost a bit over $4K annually to service. The average Australian household annually spends $2K for electricity, $1.5K on fuel, $0.9K car servicing.
@marks4214 сағат бұрын
Great article, BUT you really need a battery and a V2G capable car. While that car is out you have no place for your solar to go and at night you have no power except from the grid. If you have the battery as well (I am talking Tesla PowerWall) that has build in inverter all you have are solar panels, Battery and Car. You are covered 24hrs a day no issues but you need Car and battery capable of 10Kw output. I have a Tesla PowerWall 2 it ‘s great but I cannot run the whole house from the battery (only 5Kw output), but with our modest 12:31 home 4.4kw solar system we can run the house ~97% on solar for 9 months a year and over the whole year about 80% here in Perth Western Australia, we love this system it really works it’s not perfect though. A bigger system say 6.6-10Kw solar and the V2G car + PowerWall 3 would be perfect for most homes >97% run on solar all year around. The last bit is very difficult as the system needs to check the Grid is still there so it does need to use some power if you want to keep the grid for backup and export that could earn you a lot of money when they enable it. Just my thoughts.👍😊

My partner has worked in commercial solar and is very practised on setting houses up for solar as well. He's also quite frugal, so we're arranging batteries from Kings - approx $3,500 for 15 kW output. Says Tesla powerwalls not worth it. We're gonna have batteries here regardless of EV (we have AirBnBs here and live in FNQ where power outages in summer are frequent, so I'm sure guests would not be thrilled if we drove off for the day with the only battery! 🤣) We're waiting a bit longer before buying an EV coz we need something bigger anyways.

V2G is a very big deal from the grid's perspective, given the enormous storage resource it represents. In Australia, during extreme demand peaks the wholesale electricity price will reach its cap of A$16.6/kwh , valuing the contents of a typical 40kwh EV battery at A$660. So although the grid would likely drawn on V2G only rarely, it will pay handsomely for it. And with V2H your EV removes the need for a $15k home battery. The overall impact on EV ownership economics will be quite dramatic.

If the current plan (for NSW) is that the government is relying on people who own EVs to re-power the grid, how are they supposed to charge their cars when they're effectively using them, or away for their house, when it is being charged? This plan has more holes than Swiss Cheese. There's about 12k EVs in NSW, if the plan is to have half of new car sales be EVs by 2030, how are they going to have the power to charge them? Is the government going to ration power? There's talk about that already for this summer. Am I missing something? This sounds like, robbing Peter to pay Paul. Maybe Bowen has a plan that I don't know about.

Agreed, the net zero cult has always been a bit loose with the details, it's like a religion. It also exposes the dishonesty with the cost of net zero, as a rough example, 5 million homes spending $50,000 for an EV and a solar set up for V2G, is $300 BILLION, which Bowen, AEMO and the CSIRO, conveniently, DON'T put in their costings for the green dream. The Suckers spend $50,000 for the 'cheap' electricity, which at an average savings of $2000 a year on power bills, means it will take 25 years to break even, but at that stage they probably would have had to replace the the whole system, at least once, so it's not the sweet deal that it's being made out to be. Buy a reliable used ICE car for $10,000 get some solar panels and you'll be way ahead.

I thought i knew a lot, it seems i know little, (1) i thought EV's took electricity from the grid to charge the battery, if they put charge back to the grid won't that flatten the batteries, where will that power come from (2) as i am on my own, i recently sold the house to downsize my life (humungus mistake) i bought an apartment, now i realize if the government insist on making EV's the law, i can't own one because i have no where cheaply to charge, then i look around at all the high rise apartments being built in Sydney, where will they charge. I have owned my EV for 2 years and done 41,000 km - I have spent less than $400 on fuel in total, $0 services, $0 tyres and brakes, it's cheaper to insure than the car it replaced, $20k less expensive to buy and I like driving it a whole lot more. In addition it costs me $5000 less per year to salary package than an equivalant cost ($59k) petrol or diesel car. I really couldn't care less if it depreciated to $0 after 5 years - I'm still way ahead of the car it replaced that cost me $21k in total running costs, $32k in FBT and depeciated $40k in 4 years and 80k km.

Wouldn't you want to use your car's power to power your car? So you run your refrigerator and some lights for 12 hours, and then you're stranded in a blackout? It is cheaper to just get a solar or propane generator. As far as selling it back to the grid, do the math on the conversation.

Hey, it's the net zero dream channel, we don't worry about the details here. Just go out and spend $50,000 plus, for a solar system and an EV that will save you $2000 a year on your power bill ! It will only take 25 years to break even, that's if you don't have to replace the whole system during that time, and you probably will. It's a sweet deal Viking says so.........

Sorry, but I don't want to have an electric bomb in my garage. I have a solar system on my house paying nothing for power, in fact I am in credit for two years already. We all know already that when the battery goes on fire, NO ONE CAN STOP IT!!! My VW Amarok V6 TDI consumption is under 8L/100k and we can make almost 1000k with a tank and it's insanely powerful. Until the problems with batteries are going to be solved, I will NOT buy electric car. Can you go on sand with this ORA?
@SaintKimbo15 сағат бұрын
Agreed, these net zero/EV Zealots are doing more damage than good for the net zero cause. Pushing all this stuff down people's throats when battery tech. charging infrastructure and these V2G/H services are in their infancy, has already created a backlash from a lot of people who dived in and found that things aren't as rosy as they suggest it is. Itall too fast to soon, I'll buy an EV when battery tech is proven safe, can match ICE for range and take no more than 20 minutes from 0 to 100%, maybe in a decade.

It's all about when the demand is. As things there is no base load ( I know the Liberals wank on about it) because solar pretty much generates enough on the middle of the day. Now if you could store some of that and use it at teat time, you help the grid.

what percentage of those in the sunbelt could afford solar panels or EV"s? I suspect no where near enough to accomplish what you suggest. The western world population lives where solar capacity is less than 15% annually and in winter months less than 5%. Better revisit your calculations regarding the world using V2G, most of those who can afford will barely have enough solar for their own consumption.

I think you charge it from your solar panels during daylight and then use it to power your home at night. So you need solar panels first which are around 10 to 15k . Then you need the Ora which is in reality around 32k. So now you have spent 47k and can power your house at night.

Yes, as long as you've got plenty of solar and don't need your car during the day, you're alright. The average power bill for households in Aus is about $2000, so spend $50,000 on a solar/EV set up and it will take you 25 years to break even, that's if you don't have to replace it during that time, which you probably will. It's a sweet deal.

Because he's a net zero Zealot, that is in a cult like state of ignorance of the details. Viking can't even see the forest for the trees, even a school kid can see that spending $50,000 on a solar/EV set up, to save $2000 a year is kinda silly, especially when the system will not even last the 25 years it will take just to break even. 5 million households at $50,000k is 300 BILLION, but Bowen, the AEMO and the CSIRO DON'T include those costings in their net zero reporting, because, hey, YOU'RE paying for it.

So i need to buy an ora which is really around 32K. Then install solar panels for around 15K. Now ive spent 47 K and with government and company aproval. I might be able to power my house through the night which would traditionally cost me like $10 a night in winter and $5 in summer. But i get an Ora with the package which is actually a nice car. Im gonna have to have a good think about this one. I think Sam is pushing himself and this whole electric thing a bit too far as it is his job so needs to find sources to make more videos to make more money. For 47K. You spend $50,000 to save around $2000 oerb annum on power bills, that will take 25 years to break even, IF in the highly unlikely case of that system lasting that long. Buying an efficient, reliable second hand small car and getting solar, is a WAY better financial prospect.
