You cover a lot of good and useful ground here, really nicely done. Adding a stringed instrument to a pop song in an interesting way, that's one of the most fun aspects of being in a band; adding something that wasn't there before but adds a cool new dimension.

learn the harmony of the song, like a bass player would do, pentatonic scales are your friend, guitar solos tend to be made with 3 or more guitars (usually one doing chords, one doing the solo, 1 or more harmonizing with that solo), but bands usually only have 2 guitars while live, be that third guitar.
