Not leaking at the nails. They have excessive humidity in the house, probably from a humidifier maxed out and it’s stacking, basically going straight up into the attic and condensing on the cold metal nails. Needs a attic power venter.

Nobody going to mention the R19 max in the attic? Stripping the attic, 2" CCF for vapor barrier, R30 minimum. THEN add the airflow. But the heat transfer to the attic has to be stopped first.

Mike, the nails aren't leaking. The mold is along rafters too. I would put an N-95 mask on and see if they have a bathroom exhaust fan direct venting into the attic! There is a reason this house has massive moisture in the attic.

The moisture on the nails is condensation. It’s being caused by either the house having a humidifier or their bathroom fan is vented into the attic.

I personally believe in brazing all of my connections. In winter of 1986 I was working on a 1972 Airtemp furnace in a basement. R22 evap lines were sweat in with staybrite 8 or equivalent, I believe. I pulled on the suction line just slightly to get it out of the way to make room for a humidifier and pop the solder cracked and line blew out. I dumped the whole 15lb charge into the basement. The furnace was on and the flames turned bright green. Inhaled a little ph***gene before getting smart enough to get out. Got very lucky that day. What would have happened if that was a homeowner? I won’t take that chance. A bad braze will only leak a little and is easy to fix. There is a place for low temp solder, like evaps and associated piping and controls in medium and low temp refrigeration applications but in applications where there is potential for high pressure and the brazing is easy I will always braze. I have seen low temp joints fail under the right conditions. It is very easy to not quite fill the joint with solder and have a future issue. Carrier recommends high temp brazing as well. Why take the chance on a leak just to save 10 minutes and a little nitrogen. Teach your guys to braze and get them some good oxy-acetylene torches and make your connections really permanent. Doing this since 1982. I’ve seen a lot of things come and go through the years.

The stay brite 8 dilemma is a tough one, Im sure it lives up to Harris's test results for tensile strength, burst pressures, liquidity temp, ect. And those are all well suitable enough for any HVAC system by a long shot no doubt, I mean cmon, Harris showed test results where one end of a copper tube was soldered with staybrite 8 and had a 15% braze joint on the other end and did a burst test, the pipe itself burst 1 inch away from the 15% joint do to higher brazing temps weakening the copper tubing around the brazed joint. I believe its a great product, The problems are one: you mentioned the biggest one, fire, theres no doubt the joints will melt and blow out if the units engulfed in fire when the liquidity point is around 500 give or take a little, braze wins there, which i think is the main reason why its actually not an accepted joining method and many local codes DO NOT allow it and many manufactures have specified in IOM's for years brazed joints only, except for mechanical connections obviously, because they dont want components failing from flux entering system, you know how some people like to really get that flux all up in that shit, Flux has two ingredients in it that are both detrimental to refrigerant systems with POE, water and acid, who really knows how much flux gets into the system even when applied very minimally. At the same time though, even with silphos alloys like 5,15% you must use flux when joining copper to brass, and the 45 and 56% alloys must use flux when joining copper to steel on systems, also alluminum brazing on newer coils requires flux as well, so not sure what to think of that argument. But ya the fire thing is a tough one to deny though, refrigerant burning , toxic gasses are deadly , not a good thing

In 2012 I installed a Bryant Evolution Extreme 280ANV036 and loved it!!! Saved mucho dinero too! Comfort Setting is the only way to go to maintain best humidity levels, hot heat, cold cold and quiet operation. Also minimum 8k+ heat strip if the heat pump goes wonkie. Circuit boards can be a fickle bitch. Liked how you can manually adjust hi/low fan speed limits for best circulation and efficiency. Paid $6400 for mine new at old house in SoFLo and wish I could afford another one up here in central florida where is gets down to 30's and 40's throughout the winter season. Love your channel!!

@@PipeDoctor Per the urban dictionary "retarted" means: One who has been given additional tarts". I think you were going for "retarded"? At any rate I find some irony in the reply. But seriously, what would be surprising about a piece of metal with a nice broad surface outside a building on a cold day conducting heat from the end of a nail penetrating the building and causing its temperature to fall below dewpoint? And how, exactly, would one incorrectly pound in a roof full on nails such that each and everyone leaks? If a cold water line entering a house causes condensation to drip on the floor is the pipe leaking?

Units have sweat suction and liquid tube connections. Make suction tube connection first. 1. Cut tubing to correct length. 2. Insert tube into sweat connection on unit until it bottoms. 3. Braze connection using silver bearing or non- silver bearing brazing materials. Do not use solder (materials which melt below 800_F / 427_C). Consult local code requirements. 4. Carrier Infinity are trash. I have one and because I’m not the original owner it only has a 5 year warranty. Of course I noticed it freezing up and had a carrier service company come out that installed it and they can’t figure it out and carrier won’t warranty it because here in Ny it was installed in April so the warranty ran out in April but I don’t use Ac in April and when we ran it for the first time in late May warranty was expired. In the spring I’m ripping out this crap that was installed new in 2017.

That’s what carrier told me that the 10 year warranty is for original owner even know it was installed April 2017 and I bought the house August 2019. So the system was only 2 years old when I bought house and if you put equipment serial number it says 5 year warranty because I’m not the original owner. It just infuriates me with how much these cost that the 10 year warranty wouldn’t extend to new owner. The real kicker is the companies that I called could ask the distributor to cover mine under warranty because it was just out of the 5 year by a few months but they never get back to me. I call and email but nothing.

Perfectly normal I’m Florida to have them in Attics. I’m an hvac technician and installed a 3 ton 20 seer system in my attic. Been running great for 7 years now.

I install and work on hundreds of these. We are Carrier dealer and from my experience. If you have poor insulation and inefficient ductwork. These infinity system sucks, they have a tough time operating. I never recommend an infinity system if you have a poor insulation.

In northern climates, the problem with condensing equipment in attics during winter is the chance of condensate freezing. If that problem is properly handled, it works (although with forced air and heat rising, the lower levels and the lower parts of rooms might feel cool). For cooling during summer it’s probably better since the cool air falls and the warm air rises. This looks like replacing equipment on a retrofit into a house where radiators and a boiler were the original form of heat, and there was no cooling. And the house is probably poorly insulated unless someone went to the trouble of insulating in one of the last three or four decades.
