The Alfa Junior (known as the Alfa Romeo Milano until a few days ago) is a small SUV that’s roughly the same size as the Jeep Avenger, which is no coincidence as both Jeep and Alfa are part of the car manufacturing giant, Stellantis, which merged Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen, Jeep. Vauxhall and more - all into one company a few years ago. That’s why the Junior also shares many parts with the Avenger and the Fiat 600e, including its ‘e-CMP2’ platform and 54kWh battery. This is also the first electric car to come from the historic Italian brand.
That battery, mated to a 154bhp electric motor that drives the front wheels, manages a range of around 250 miles, and they’ll be a sportier one coming, too. The Alfa Junior Veloce will get 236bhp, as it will use the same motor as the recently-confirmed Abarth 600e. It’ll also get wider track, a mechanical locking differential, so it should be properly fun to drive.
The 54kWh lithium-ion battery is familiar from the Jeep Avenger, Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa-e and more, and here it’s expected to manage a range of around 250-miles, although we’ll have to wait for the finalised figure. The higher-powered, beefed-up Alfa Junior Veloce model gets 236bhp - rather than the 154bhp of the standard car - plus a number of tweaks to make it feel like a proper enthusiast’s car, so we’d expect range on that to be quite a bit lower. Rapid charging is up to 100kW, which will get a 10-80% charge in around 30 minutes, or a 100-mile top-up in about 20 minutes. A 7kW home charger will deliver a full charge from nearly empty in eight hours.
Join Nicki as she drives the new Alfa Romeo Junior for the first time. Has Alfa built a winner? Will it be as good to drive as more expensive alternatives? Let us know in the comments below.

I wonder what all the nay-sayers drive? This is not a 2.5t oversized EV. It’s small, relatively light and can handle like any Alfa should. It’s more than enough to do what it needs to do in town yet be fun on a twisty road. It’ll be a nice complement to my Giulietta and 4C. It’s on the shopping list.

It's normal and if you think about it, it was expected. First they rave about how good EVs are, then as more people get them and a lot get disappointed, they will say bad things about it and then, the third phase, in a while things will calm down and then they will be more neutral about it. EVs are great in some things for some people and at the same time, EVs are terrible at some things to some people as everything in this world is @@leftcoaster67

As a PS, my Alfetta GT was far from perfect but it had the most wonderful steering and seating position plus extremely long legs for touring plus a gearbox over the rear axel. So different from cars available in the early eighties. My current Alfa Spider has been with me for 30 years. The motor is indestructible, all original, just routine maintenance.

@@grahamreddel5682 The Alfetta was a "true" Alfa Romeo and the last Alfa Romeo platform designed by Alfa Nord, having maintained our Alfetta bought new by my father in 1976, and designed and engineered in ITaly by the same team that was at Alfa since before WW2. Alfa Romeo died in both its engineering philosophy and design philosophy in 1986 when Fiat bought it, so stopped being a marque and became a brand. The following Alfa 155 and so on were based on the Fiat Tempra and just alienated many Italians from the brand. The last true Alfa Romeo built in house was the Alfa Romeo 75 still using the platform of the Alfetta launched 1972.

Stellantis is the Luxottica of cars. Formerly independent companies are now brands. When people buy a Jeep, or a Citroen, or a Peugeot, or an Alfa Romeo, or a Fiat, or a Vauxhall/Opel they get the same car. It might have superficial differences from the other brands but it's built from the same parts bin and mechanically the same. It's actually depressing how much competition has gone out of the automotive industry in the last 10 years.

@@user-rb2eo4sm9f Agree. Stellantis have built a competitive platform to use across all their brands. Alfa Romeo seem to have tuned it enough for it to feel Alfa. Maybe the way to think of Alfa nowadays is more like Brabus to the Smart/Mercedes brand. I would like to see what Alfa do with the slightly bigger Stellantis platform perhaps to produce something to replace the Giulia.

@@PaulMeier-cu3ds oh jeez, a coupe version of the current giulia would be wonderful too, eh ? Edit: the GTV6 was indeed a very desirable car. • The i5N is from a different class, so it is bigger in every direction, performance, and range. • After driving EV's for 12 years, I would say for range and performance parity, you need close to 4 miles per Kilowatt of energy to have reduced range anxiety. So let's say 3.5m/kW - you need to travel at 70mph for 3hrs before a break is needed on a long-distance trip. So, an optimal battery range at 70mph for 3 hours needs at 3.5m/kW = 210 miles*3.5m/kW = 60kW battery (usable range), plus the 10% we don't go below and the 80% ideal charge capacity. So, an extra 30% is needed for the battery we are advised to have, to keep the battery healthy. • So, in theory, for a 3-hour motorway journey at 70mph, with aircon, in-car entertainment, hills, the odd boost of power for overtaking etc, another 18kW is needed, making a standard battery 78kW. (Few cars can maintain 3.5m/kW for 3hrs at 70mph...) • Of course, this would be a 2.5 tonne car (with lower efficiency). So, 100kW charge? Too slow, if you want continued adoption of these types of vehicles. • My current car is a Zoe with only 50kW CCS, and a 52kW battery. I have to ignore the safety limits of 80% charging because my range is 220miles. Charging takes over 1 hour 15mins, and I drive on ECO at 60-65 mph for all long journeys. • No one wants to answer these types of comments except to say, we don't do long distances in the UK all the time... our average journey distance is low. But if you only have one car to cover every occasion, what would you choose? And at what price entry point?

No, it’s NOT track focused. This drive event shows how the Alfa handles on a twisty road when driven enthusiastically. The Junior has not yet been homologated so can’t yet be driven on public roads. Of course if one never drives with enthusiasm then you’d never consider an Alfa anyway.

The obvious answer is that they cut back on the battery size and sound deadening, both of which are heavy. 54 kWh is pretty small and at a realistic 3.5 miles/kWh it will only have a real world range of under 190 miles, which is way behind most rivals.

Can you test the lower versions please. It would be a huge disappointment if they don't get the same steering and suspension just because they aren't as fast. (I know it wouldn't be logical for them to be lesser in those departments, but most manufacturers don't seem to have logical minds when it comes to their cheaper models and think customers should make do with inferior handling and steering if they opt for the more economical models!)

These new Stellantis cars are supposed to be pretty efficient. Frankly a big battery in a car like this would be totally stupid - if its going to handle well you want to keep it light! WLTP is a better indication of comparative range between cars than battery size is, and this is in the same WLTP ballpark as plenty of other cars that manage a real world 180-200 miles - more than adequate.

We loved the sport cars of Alfa Romeo, Alfa was like the Italian Studebaker of the 50th and 60th. Great designs and mostly 2-door coupe's and cabrio's. This 4 door thing is just the next boring "SUV like" transport vehicle. BTW, a "hot hatch" also has just 2 side doors and the "hatch" is the 3rd. When describing the body style, the hatch is counted as a door, therefore a hatchback with two passenger doors is called a three-door and a hatchback. "Hot hatch" is when that car had a stronger engine. With four passenger doors it is called a five-door, or possibly in 2024 a SUV. That it can go faster around the corner doesn't make it a hot hatch, more a "hot SUV", And it is not much different than a Volvo EX30 or a Citroën ë-C3. So what, that it is 2 sec faster from 0-100 than the ë-C3, it is also over €10k more expansive. When this was a 2-door coupe, yes, that would make it fun, exotic and unique again, but his is just the next 4-door SUV in an endless line of boring 4-door SUVs that fill the streets.

That might matter to you. Others might want a driver's car with decent range and charging which meets 99% of typical driver needs.

While the front is well done, looking to the rear I'm spontaneously getting depressed! The front has this aggressive dynamic look while the totally has not. And these rear lights coming downwards over the side is so ugly. It stands totally off the cars design. The ugliness starts with the C pillar all way to the back end.

in front it looks like previous Renault Captur, from the back it looks like some KIA EVs. SUVs and crossovers could try to look nice, look kinda sporty, be kinda fun, but the fundamentals aren't there. if you know you know.

@Petroelhead Petroelhead said: "The giulietta was a hatchback." Sorry, but the Alfa Giulietta was never a "hatch back" When describing the body style, the hatch is counted as a door, therefore a hatchback with two passenger doors is called a three-door or "hatchback". "Hot hatch" is when that car had a stronger engine. With four passenger doors it is called a five-door, or possible today a SUV. The Guilietta was not designed as a 3 door car.

Wrong! All wrong mate. A Hatchback is when you can acess the car from the boot, cargo area. And yes, Giulietta was a hatchback... Even Tesla Model S its a Hatchback

@@reynotleAgree that the Giulietta is a hatchback ( just a five door one rather than three ). The Tesla is more of a saloon in the UK market place. This new Alfa is a small SUV. Not a hot hatch though

@@Dqtube All brand new cars have issues. The Bronco sets itself on fire. The entire VW range fought with software issues for 3 years. MG cars were slow and laggy. Never buy the first release of anything. But my argument for Volvo EX30 being a good value little SUV still stands.

such a shame it's yet another suv rather than a normal hatchback. the car would look so much better if it wasn't on stilts. With how cars have got faster over the years I wouldn't call it a hot hatch anymore, just warm.

It's possible to design a BEV without it having to be an SUV. I think it's more to do with large numbers of consumers favouring the SUV/ oversized style. The Junior will sell well, I just hoped that Alfa would have produced something different to the masses. Giulietta/A3 size rather than an ID variant.

"a track focused suv" ... aarrghh !! For the love of God, can you *please* not use that expression. It is complete nonsensical gobbledegook. Otherwise, a very engaging review. I can't quite believe I'm saying this, but I actually like this car. It must be because it's red, and an Alfa Romeo. I have a weakness for anything red and Italian, which fatally erodes my critical facilities. But it still seems like a really nice little (?) car, amazing really, when you consider that it belongs to a class of cars, which are very easy to dislike; namely compact cross-over/suv type EVs.
