Nice going... I didn't think I needed another distortion or fuzz pedal until now. I fell in love with David's playing at age 15 when I saw 'Pompeii' at a midnight movie in 1979. I had just gotten my first electric guitar and I was awestruck by the sonic possibilities. I bought a steel bottleneck the VERY NEXT DAY so I could recreate those awesome bowed sounds. I still have it and still use it. I WILL be buying this pedal.

Follow-up: I bought this pedal and it has quickly raced to the front of the line in my fuzz pedal collection. Sadly I don't have the guts to run it into my 1988 Peavey Heritage VTX amp on the Full Power setting. 130 watts. Uh...

I am in awe whenever you are able to closely replicate Gilmour’s sound. Even the attack of your pick sounds like him. I wonder if it’s the eq or the muff that’s enabling you to be able to do that or if you’ve truly mastered the picking technique
@gilmourishofficial Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think that attack is caused by a number of things. How the amp is set, what pedals you use and their settings etc. I'm using heavy pics 1mm gauge and I hold the pic barely clearing my fingers, which allow my fingers to hit, mute and pinch the strings as well.

It would be cool if you did a video about stacking pedals. Compressor, Big Muff and overdrive. I'm a bit confused about that whole thing, the different order of the pedals, and specially how much a difference it makes. It seems for example that some Big Muffs stack better than others, but does Gilmore always stack his drive pedals? Sadly I can't afford buying on a whim, so having a more clear understanding would help. I'm sure there's more people like me. In any case, I love your videos, I've been a fan for years. Thanks for all this great content!

Thanks for the kind words! I’ll put it on the to-do list :)
@eddievhfan19842 жыл бұрын
I believe he has finally dropped a video like you requested, but I think I can give you a quick overview. As Gilmour used his gear, he would often place overdrives/boosters in front of the Big Muff, to provide slight EQing and make it stand out in the mix more. In this application, gain settings on the OD/boost should be lowered to near-clean boost, with the EQ controls doing most of the work (it would be preferable to use a model with separate EQ controls rather than a unified "tone" control). This method works great if you want to push the amp into overdrive without the BM, as the amp's saturation will also provide some tone shaping and smoothing out of its tone. This should work with most models of Big Muff, so long as you're not generating a lot of distortion downline of the BM. As for pre-BM boost/OD, this can be useful if you need even MOAR drive out of your BM, but be warned: the baseline Triangle BM already has at least 40dB of gain on tap, and the op-amp BM goes can exceed 60dB at full gain. Unless carefully balanced, you could turn your guitar sound into a squealy, noisy mess. I recommend using light overdrive/boosted clean settings, and either matching the output of the booster/OD to that of the BM, or providing a slight volume boost into the BM. Slight treble boost may also help, as the Triangle, NYC reissue, and op-amp BMPs cut more highs pre-clipping than the Ram's Head models do, explaining the perceived difference in articulation and clarity. (Don't overdo it, though! Cutting the highs pre-clipping helps keep the BM from sounding like angry bees or nails on a chalkboard at high gain settings.) As to compression, it is believed (as documented on the @gilmourish site) that while David had an compressor downline from the BM at one point, it was either used for clean tones only or to maintain clean headroom for the Hiwatt amps. A compressor after the BM can help with smoothing out raw edges or maintaining perceived levels/presence without resorting to EQ, but since the BM is already sort of applying compression to the signal (by going the extreme route of clipping it!), keeping the threshold just barely triggering and the amount of compression low will help provide this smoothness without excessive noise. Also, depending on the compressor in question, some models based on or simulating tube or optically-controlled compressors can also be good sources of overdrive tone as well. Compressors pre-distortion are more common, as they can increase the sustain of a note without requiring extra distortion gain/coloration. This also provides a more stable tone into the BM, which means the tone will not drastically change as much as the note decays. For this application, the sky's the limit, depending on how much sustain vs. touch sensitivity vs. pick attack/high-end response you desire. Hope this works out for ya!

As far as I see, it has the classic mid and dry sound signature of EHX like 12V reissue of Deluxe Electric Mistress I have (big wide grey discontinued box). I believe that, the pedal brands produce pedals which have the same characters we hear because of the same components have been used. In example, my Vick Audio 73 Ram's Head and R-Comp pedals are more transparent, more treble and more wet than my other pedals because of the Neutrik female jacks that the company uses.

Hi Bjorn, thanks for taking the time to make these videos, they are so inspiring. I have a both a question and an opinion, if you could perhaps steer me in the right direction. I'm in the market for a big muff, I've just bought the Past FX TDY and it's an amazing overdrive, stunning!! So I've been contemplating buying the Patriarch for a muff, and my reasoning is, it seems to have lots of flexibility with the mids, tone and lows dials. My other options are the EHX rams head or the Green Russian. Considering you own and have played all of these, for a general use big muff which would be your pick if you could only have 1? Oh I'm using a Hi-Tone Lowatt and Gilmour Strat
@gilmourishofficial2 ай бұрын
With your amp, you could go for any Muff. Depends on what tone you want. The EHX Ram's Head is a superb clone of the original, while the Patriarch is similar to the Green Russian, with a bit more gain and mids boost. I tend to use Ram's Head Muffs but the Patriarch is probably more versatile.

Hi Bjorn, Ive just added a mxr m108s 10 band eq to my first ever pedal board. I’ve placed it before the rams head because it has a gain boost. Is that right or would you recommend it being after the rams head? The first few pedals are - comp - MXR EQ - Rams head- Buffalo TD-X . many thanks
@gilmourishofficial4 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you need. Having the EQ in fron of a Muff adds more gain and EQs the signal going into the Muff. Having it after, which is more the conventional way, adds more tone and allows you to cut/boost the Muff tone.

Hi Bjorn. I have a fundamental issue while playing the Ram's head. While pushing up the sustain anything over 11 o'clock, it gets noisy (a lot of feedback, hiss & humm) bcoz of which I have to roll off the guitar volume to 4 or 5... How do i get this fixed by pushing up the sustain while getting a creamy tone of the big muff?
@gilmourishofficial2 жыл бұрын
That's the nature of the ram's head. It has a lot of gain, which will create a bit of noise. This reissue is very close to the original early 70s model. How much gain and noise you get depends on what amp you're using and how it's set, what guitar and pickups you use and what other pedals you use with the Muff.

Thanks! The Hoof is still my favourite Ram’s Head. I’ve used it for years and to my ears it’s unique. That being said, this one comes very close. I’ll update the buyer’s guides early next year but I will give all of these new Muff reissues very high scores.

Bjorn, you state the delay time. But what about the feedback and mix?
@gilmourishofficial4 жыл бұрын
I usually have 6-7 repeats and a fairly low mix. The mix/volume depends on your overall tones.

Do you like it more than the Vick audio rams head? If so why?
@gilmourishofficial5 жыл бұрын
This one is more vintage sounding. More gain and low end. The Vick is a bit smoother and the mid range booster makes it more versatile. A matter of taste.

I always start by saying that Big Muffs needs the right amp. Check out this feature on my site for some tips www.gilmourish.com/?p=7115 Based on that, between the new EXH reissues, I'd say that the Ram's Head will do a very good Animals/Wall tone, while the Green Russian overall is my favourite.

I'm biased as I have it but I think I prefer the triangle reissue (more body/less trebbly to me, more versatile applications). I just find it so inspiring to use. Great playing as always
@gilmourishofficial5 жыл бұрын
All three - Triangle, Ram's Head and Green Russian - has characteristic qualities of their own so it comes down to taste and which of these that fits your setup best. The OP-amp Muff can do Gilmour as well but it's a different beast.

Great review as always! One thing I wish you would do, however, is a quick few strums without the pedal on. It is immensely useful to hear the clean tone to understand what exactly the pedal reacts with in order to sound as it does in your videos.

John Foster The boss compact delay series has really great sounds, range from like 110 to 150 bucks, the new dd-8 is sick. I dont personally own any delay pedals but the boss ones are probably the ones i would go for in that price point.

Here's my take on this pedal, which I regret having bought last month. It's way too hot! I mean way too overdriven. The Volume control is so much louder than your amp's signal, it's virtually impossible to match up to the level of your clean signal (when the pedal is OFF). The Volume dial goes from 7-o'clock (off) to 5-o'clock (full on), and yet just going to 8-o'clock on the dial is considerably louder than your clean signal. Anything above 8-o'clock is obnoxiously insane heavy metal noise! What's the point of that amount of insane overdrive right at the start of the dial? It's the same thing with the Sustain dial. You have all the fuzz and sustain you could ever want right at the start of the dial (at 8-o'clock; just barely on), and to go higher than that is just too much unless you're trying to kill old folks within earshot!
@gilmourishofficial3 жыл бұрын
That’s the nature of the Big Muff. If you go back and listen to a handful of original early 70s ram’s head Big Muff, you’ll find that they all sound different. EHX was known for using different parts and age will also determine how well the parts have held up. Some sounded warm and mild, while others were even hotter than this reissue.
