Great review! I REALLY like this mic as I have stated on other posts. Thanks for doing the review on this one. This mic has gotten really popular on sports talk radio and their voices sound REALLY good (obviously, they have tons of equipment in their studios to make this mic really shine), but not every mic will make spoken word sound great. The RE-20, RE27 and SM7B can really shine if you have the equipment. Hell, they shine even with a simple channel strip like the DBX 286S.

The Mic looks really good, but to me, it doesn’t have that $500 sound. I don’t know....I really didn’t care for it to much. However, it did help some when you were right on top of it. The RE20 has a much better sound than all the other RE series, in my opinion. Great job on the review.

EDDIE HILL I agree that it just doesn't have something special or highly desirable that would make EV charge almost $500 for it. Even though as you and Bandrew say that this mic sounds pretty good when you get on top of it, you shouldn't have to practically eat the mic (or any, for that matter) to do that. It just sounds ok, to me, 'ok' meaning 'not $500 worth'. I wouldn't refuse an offer of a free one, though if I needed to shop for a dynamic vocal mic, I'd take an RE-20 over this one.

@@waltertomaszewski1083it’s worth it in terms of a dynamic mic, it’s gonna last you thru humidity and other situations when not recording in the same space everyday such as humidity or condensation damage and condensors are wayyyyy more prone to this than dynamic mics, for me living in florida and not having a dedicated space i had to shop for dynamics and this is the closest sound to a condensor you can get from what i’ve seen and heard

That mic looks beautiful and sounds great with the high cut on, but with all the other modes sounding crummy and the switches being easy to break, it doesn't seem worth the $500 price tag.
@jttech44
@jttech44 6 жыл бұрын
The 250hz rolloff is to curb the boundary effect, and he really didn't test it with the cut on and being right on top of the mic. The 1k rolloff is useful if you want to record *only* highs, like if you had drum overheads but were also running room mics. It's a niche for sure, but it'd probably sound great. The $500 price tag is steep, but it's not terrible if you like the sound and have a use for it. The rejection is very, very good, and there are plenty of uses for that.

great review as always. I got the RE27 microphone for Christmas. I like it much better than my RE20 as it sounds more natural. The switches are kind of hard to maneuver as they are nearly flush with the metal capsule. My kit came with a really nice boom arm and shock mount. Far better than the boom arm from Rode. This is my go to mic. BTW I got the Rode Broadcaster and ended up returning as it had this really bad grounding hum right out the box. IMO Electrovoice makes the best mics and the RE27 sounds really good on you in this review.

I don't see the point of this mic. For $500 you get a mic with so many cons, when you could spend less money on other mics in the same lineup or competing mics and get much better results. Those cons would be easier to ignore if the mic cost like $200 less.

I just got this mic and did a quick comparison to my RE20 - I was wondering why the mic sounds so sharp! I was suspecting I had a faulty unit as my RE20 sounded so much better to me. But watching your review, I guess it's just the mic. I will have to re-test but with the high cut switch enabled.

Hi Bandrew! I'm new to your channel and I've really learned a lot so far. I look forward to receiving your video emails. I want to podcast and also do voice overs, however, I am a little reserved. I know I should throw caution to the wind and just do it and learning from you motivates and inspires me to do so. Thanks Bandrew for your informative videos.

Hi Bandrew, I love the channel. I have and idea that I think could be nice for the Hi-Fi mics, you can upload to soundcloud or something (I don't know which could work) a raw flac file of the same audio from the videos for the music enthisiasts, because KZbin has a maximum sound quality of 192kbps I think, and has a lot of compression. I don't know if this is could work, it's just an idea.

Wait...? I just saw about your video of You're Talking Into Your Microphone Wrong (FAQ Series). And I just saw about the using a microphone of Electro Voice RE27. Also you already buy from a microphone is $500. That is so expensive to that microphone.

This has been my golden standard since 1998. So worth the extra hundred bucks above the re20. Or you can get it for like $250 from guitar center after they rent it out a couple of times. I snag one whenever I have a chance. Want to sell the one with a bad switch? : ) One more thing. In the studio we appreciate a little extra off access pickup because guests move all over the place and as long as we run it through good compression it picks them up really well without bringing the broadcast to a screeching halt. I've interviewed five people using three of these and there is no issue with two people talking into this mic at a 45° angle. I think that was one of the things that was considered when building it.... May you tell me what that magnet was? I've never heard that before

I have heard this mic sound amazing. I am just not sure what Pre he is using. Because of its higher sensitivity, it allows more frequencies to be recorded. Hence it needs a higher quality recording and pre. On a cheap pre/recorder it will sound harsh because a cheap Pre/recorder will simply not handle the high frequencies well. To me, the issue is not about the Mic but about his other equipment. The other 2 mics simply do NOT reproduce the power and some frequencies at all. Hence they sound better because there is fewer frequencies that sound bad.

I despise this mic. It looks good but that's about. It's a great mic if you want a sound that's harsh, shrill and un-natural. I've been swapping these out in my broadcast studios for... really anything else. I've had good luck with the Sennheiser e835, for $100.

@jordanbitz3245
@jordanbitz3245 6 жыл бұрын
The RE/27 is designed to sound brighter than the RE20 and RE320 and by having to use a high cut to get a decent sound IMHO defeats the purpose. Overall, it just kind of lacks depth and punch, even with compression and eq I find it hard to make stand out against other mics.
@Podcastage
@Podcastage 6 жыл бұрын
Jordan Bitz Thank you for sharing that. I suppose I didn’t really have that experience since I don’t podcast with anyone else... I’m just a guy screaming into a mic by himself. Question for ya since I’ve always wondered...what kind of ratios and thresholds do you use on your compressors in broadcast? I imagine you have a HARD HARD limiter running, but the voices are also typically very compressed. Cheers mate.
@jordanbitz3245
@jordanbitz3245 6 жыл бұрын
My usual starting point for mics is a threshold of -19 with a ratio of 4.5:1. It varies depending on the talent, some need more and others I'll back it off a bit. We use Axia IP consoles that gives me the ability to have a recallable preset for each on-air talent.

IIRC, Electro Voice has a flat $200 or $250 maintenance fee. If you know how to solder which is required to fully disassemble this, you can replace it yourself for significantly cheaper. I don't personally know how to do this though.

I liked this mic, but God it is way over priced. I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on the RE320. Here’s why: Great performance. It’s a little more lively (if that’s the right word) than the RE20, and I like that. I think I’m going to be able to get away without a cloudlifter, and that saves me $150. You can get this mic for $329 WITH a boom arm, shock mount, and XLR cord. I think that makes it cheaper than the Heil PR40, and price competitive with the Rode Procaster which are the other mics I’ve been looking at.
@czdaniel1
@czdaniel1 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't personally looked into it, but many here in the comments are suggesting the RE-20 over this mic. Can a Cloudlifter go bad just from usage over time? (which is a long-way of asking, can you buy it used?) I figure it's just basic electrical circuit engineering: It either works or it doesn't, with no slow-death caused by usage over time.

The ElectroVoice RE-320 microphone is a better less costly microphone than the ElectroVoice RE-20. The RE-20 has a audio transformer that the audio signal must pass through. Audio transformers limits audio bandwidth. The ElectroVoice RE-20 microphone has a narrower frequency response and lower audio signal output than the ElectroVoice RE-320 microphone. I own 16 ElectroVoice RE-27 N/D microphones the best microphones for digital recordings. Condenser microphones such as the Neumann u87 microphone are best for analog recordings such as open reel to reel analog tape recorders at 7.5, 15, and 30 (IPS's) inches per a second on quarter inch audio tape noise reduction needed. The preferred microphones for digital recordings are Dynamic or Ribbon microphones. Preferred Dynamic microphone is ElectroVoice RE 27 N/D and the preferred Ribbon microphone is AEA R44CX. These newest generation of Dynamic or Ribbon microphones that have Neodymium Iron Boron magnets that gives higher output, can withstand higher sound pressure levels, and broader frequency response, with no internal noise
