ElectroMagic: The Music of the Main Street Electrical Parade

In this episode we explore the illuminating history of Disney's Main Street Electrical Parade and its iconic theme song, "Baroque Hoedown". Created by Gershon Kingsley and Jean-Jacques Perrey in the 1960's, versions of Baroque Hoedown could be found in Walt Disney World's Electrical Water Pageant, Disneyland's failed replacement Light Magic, and the 60th anniversary parade Paint the Night. But the Main Street Electrical Parade remains the fan-favorite as it returns year after year.

Such a lovely, informative trip down memory lane! My 1st memory of the Electrical Parade was Christmas of 99 when my parents took us to Florida. Elliot was my favorite magic trick & my mom surprised me with one of those giant lollipops. (Which subsequently languished on our counter for weeks after the trip as I couldn't finish it in one sitting. Languishing much like the Parade XD) As much as the company uses the Parade like a stop gap, those ad campaigns know exactly where my feels are.

And even now it lives on in the "Disney electrical sky parade" in Disneyland Paris, I got to see the normal one and at least heard all 3 versions (Normal, Halloween and Christmas), came across this video to find more history about one of my all-time-favorite soundtracks. And I'm not disappointed...

What a strange and sporadic history the Disney parades have had! I really appreciate how much research and editing must go into a video like this. How in the world do you have an "interview" of your toddler self talking about the parade? That seems like a crazy coincidence!

Weird case of right place at the right time. I was too young to remember but according to my parents, they used to interview guests for the show, and we happened to visit on the day they were filming. We met the hosts earlier in the day and they remembered us later that night and wanted to interview me. And the rest is history!

I feel like if you take all the light up nighttime parades since the OG and mix them up, somewhere in there there’s the perfect thing. I LOVE Paint the Night and watch it a lot- the music is wild and wonderful. It’s a shame that didn’t have the love the Electrical Parade did, but I feel like there’s a cool marriage of Electrical Parade and Paint the Night somewhere out there. Like you mentioned- there’s something about it’s simplicity that just works in a way the bigger, flashier ones don’t. I feel like if they do the parade as-is and just keep using the technology to beef up and improve the actual floats and machines, they’re there.

Dreamlights is kind of like MSEP & Paint The Night. It uses older effects but with more modern/advanced technology. The music too is classic while keeping the rhythm/beat up to date

In 2001, the music wasn't the Dreamlights version but the classic one. The Dreamlights version of the music came only in DCA in 2009 with the add of Tinkerbell and the pixie dust.

I may catch heat for this, but jokes aside, it wasn’t THAT bad. The soundtrack holds up even if the show didn’t.

It was known internally by the parade department as "Light Tragic". Its development came on the heels of The Main Street Hop, Party Gras, and Lion King (remember kids, the big Broadway show got its start as a PARADE at Disneyland) -- the sky was the limit. But by that time people with any critical voices were ignored. During rehearsals (this is all from friends who did the parade since it was after I had left) it was clear something was wrong but entertainment management became a bit tone-deaf to criticism and it was forced through anyway. $20M+ down the drain because cooler heads couldn't prevail.

Honestly, I wish Disney would just let the parade die already! It was cool at the time but hasn't aged very well at all. Also how did neither Paint the Night or the electrical parade never have a tron segment?

I didn’t want to go into it in the video, but I think you hit the nail on the head. I’ll always have a nostalgic fondness for the parade, but seeing it in its current state, especially with the lack of maintenance, is just depressing. It’s a shame Paint the Night hurt the performers too much. I thought it was the perfect continuation of the MSEP. Also a Tron float would be amazing. Maybe if they bring it to Magic Kingdom for the ride’s opening? 👀

MY biggest complaint is that they changed J-J Perrey's composition by removing the one short (7 count instead of 8) measure for "choreographic reasons" when it wasn't a problem for the first 45 years of the events.

THANK YOU!! I’ve been saying this for so long. Disney won’t ever retouch this parade and honestly its better if it just “glowed” away for good. A newer nighttime parade would do more justice for the parks than this.
