My father-in-law was a diesel mechanic beginning in the Army In Vietnam and will finally retire this June. He’s deaf in one ear and can’t hear out of the other. I’d be afraid to guess at how many Detroits he had his head next to while it was screaming for all it was worth. He worked on the huge mining trucks that had monster two strokes in them for years before they finally transitioned 4-stroke diesels. He’d come home from work so black from working on them that he couldn’t scrub it off with Lava soap.

Any thoughts on increasing the size of the exhaust here?Installing a intercooler would be a big help on entering air temperature as we all know, because cooler entering air temperature increases performance greatly. Y'all are all smarter than I am by a long shot, and trying to experiment like ya'll are I'd think that would have been designed into the intake system to get optimum performance results. So I'm slightly confused here about getting true results from all your efforts. Either way very interesting, and I am surprised that the hot side housing wasn't glowing red on several of the extended pulls on the little beast.

I read on the boat forums that the Detroit 2-cycles last well up to about 0.7 HP/ci but lifetime drops off beyond that. Anything approaching or exceeding 1HP/ci will reduce life severely. They were talking about the 71 series I think, not sure how the 53's compare to that. They may be more stout. The 4-53 is actually a very big heavy engine for such a small displacement.

There’s no way I would take anything to this guy and let him Dyno it. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. How much load did he put on that engine. In other words what was the dyno set at to get that number? If it was set wrong it could have gave bad numbers meaning higher numbers than what the engine really did.
@ACatKrom
@ACatKrom Ай бұрын
do you have any idea how a dyno works?? nothing you said was close to correct, or even made any sense, there is no such thing as "what was the dyno set at" A dyno measures the amount of torque required to hold the engine at a rpm. This one uses a water brake to hold the engine to the desired rpm.
@bobbywright2100
@bobbywright2100 Ай бұрын
@@ACatKrom yes I do and you can change flow rates and rpm rates on that dyno which will let the engine rev at different rpm’s per second. Different rpm rates will give different results.You can actually make higher numbers or lower numbers depending on where it is set at. Next to my shop is a friend who has a dyno that is set up similar to I guess the one there. And yes sir it’s was explained to me about flow rates and rpm rates with such Dyno’s. And another thing water brake dynos are known for giving higher numbers because there not as precise as EC DYNO’S which my neighbor also has. Now did I maybe word it wrong for you ,,,, possibly but I know about how they work and I know you can load a dyno to get higher numbers than what an engine actually produces.
@ACatKrom
@ACatKrom Ай бұрын
@@bobbywright2100 Still mostly wrong, coming from a guy who went to engineering school, ran the dyno there for FSAE, and has built/dyno tuned several high performance 2 stroke sleds. ramp rate may have a tiny effect on the number, but only if you do something stupid. You are being fed a line of BS about eddy current vs water brake. The type of brake has nothing to do with recording the data, if the brake can hold the engine to the rpm you are trying to measure the data will be the same no matter what kind you use. The ONLY WAY to make a dyno read higher than actual is for the operator to purposely input incorrect data, period.
