Thank you for this video and for helping to spread the word on battery safety! A couple of side notes… - 18650’s weren’t created for the flashlight industry. They were, and still are, created to only be used in fully protected battery packs. Never as single cells that are removable by the user. The flashlight industry, as well as the radio control, vaping, and other communities realized the power they could have available and switched over to using these 18650 cells. But any use of single cells outside of a protected battery pack is still considered an “unauthorized” use by the manufacturers and is discouraged, sometimes very actively. - The top part of these cells do not have that side seam you described. There are no seams anywhere on the metal can. The can is pressed out, with the open top, the spiral roll of the cell’s active materials is inserted, and then the deeply indented ring near the top of the can is created. This provides a “shelf” on the inside of the cell for the top contact assembly to rest on when it’s inserted into the top of the can. Then the top edge of the can is crimped down onto the top contact assembly’s plastic seal to hold it all into place.

Thanks Mooch! Theres gonna be a follow-up part for battery safety when Season 4 kicks off in 2023(after Season 3's nic and e-liquid episodes), that's when I go even further into safe use in mechs and that kinda thing.

Can't thank you enough for making these videos, Vic. This one in particular. Great idea to remove the outer wrapper and give folks a visual explanation of how these batteries work. When I first started vaping, I honestly did not know that the whole outside shell was a negative contact point. So easy to cause a short circuit. Battery safety and SAFE STORAGE is paramount when you use an external battery. You're keeping a lot of folks safe.

Ouch - ALWAYS use a pair of batteries as a pair (or triplet as a set) - buy them new together, charge them together, use them together, and never swap cells between sets. This way they also age together, and behave the same in use - you do not want to have two batteries in use where one discharges faster than the other (that is, it holds less charge than the other, which is natural as the cells age). If you have two cells in the mod with one becoming discharged before the other, the total voltage will stay high enough for the mod to still function even though one is being discharged dangerously low - and every time you use them, the battery becomes further damaged by this under-voltage, making the mismatch worse over time - until fizz-bang and "is that a mod in your pocket or are you uncontrollably delighted to see me". Low-cost brands - just don't. They have wraps with misleading claims about the discharge rate they can achieve and that will kill them fast. The only manufacturer which does not advise against vaping use is Molicel, but Sony/Murata, LG, Samsung, and Panasonic/Sanyo are all good and reliable, but never exceed the amperage rating on the cell, which will be marked on legally sold (i.e. not grey import) cells. Take the watts you use and divide by 3.5 for single cells or 7 for dual cells and you get the amps at the point when the cell(s) is/are almost discharged. Molicel makes all 3 of the common cell sizes, but in the unlikely event that you need an 18350, 20350 or 26650, iJoy have had a reasonable (but patchy) standard or a primary importer like Fogstar will possibly have own-branded ones which they batch-test and guarantee. ALL respectable sellers will include hard cases with cells. Use them! High amps = lower capacity. There is no getting away from it - there is only so much space inside a cell and if that is used for conductors (to give high discharge rates) it leaves less space for electrolyte (for larger capacity), and vice-versa. You just can't have your cake and eat it. If someone tries to sell you a 50A cell in any size, run, do not walk, to your nearest trading standards department and tell them. They do not exist and any attempt to drag that many amps from a battery will end badly. If you vape at low (MTL) wattage you may be fine with lower amp (and higher capacity) cells 35w / 3.5v = 10A, for a single cell, but figure that wattage and the resultant current rating you need for yourself. If you are a true MTL vaper with a 21700-sized single-cell mod, you may even be able to go for one of the 5,000 mAh cells. Lower wattage vapers in a restrictive direct lung range and dual cells may be able to do the same - do the maths, it is simple arithmetic. If the cells ever feel warm, stop vaping or charging them and put them on a non-inflammable non-conductive surface to cool - you are using them too hard, and that will get you into fizz-bang territory again. The man who knows more about Li-Ion cells than anyone else I've ever heard of goes under the nickname Mooch, or Battery Mooch. It is his livelihood as an electrical engineer specialising in power storage, and manufacturers consult with him, while he also offers services to government agencies and utility power providers, among many others. He has a channel on here, and can also be found at other sites (notable ECF - which is the e-cigarette forum) using the normal internet search engines. I (and many others) regard his word as gospel on battery safety and the characteristics of each make and model of cell available. If he has not tested the cell you are thinking of buying (unlikely, as he's tested hundreds over the years), then it is unlikely to be worth wasting money on. You can look up what cells he recommends for any given power output in his extensive testing tables. If he says a cell is good for 15A, you can bet on it (fine up to 52.5w single cell or 105w dual cell.

Ok, the first point, I haven't used married sets of batteries for years. Lithium ION cells do not act like NiMh or NiCad batteries and most people I know just don't marry set pairs anymore. Second point, the whole point of this video, as I stated several times, was to touch on the very basics for people who are using pod kits who are thinking of jumping into the territory of single battery aios/mod or dual battery mods, and that's regulated mods, not mechs which will be covered in Season 4. Paty 2 of the battery video, which will be launching with Season 4 for high-powered vaping/mech vaping will be covering all the major aspects of battery safety. However, for regulated devices that are on the market these days, basic battery safety and general advice are all that's needed since mods these days are packed to the hilt with all sorts of safety features.

@@phillee2814 agreed. Not all batteries are made equal. 20s, 30Q, 30T, 40T, and P42a. Each has their place. I guess this video was very basic, intended for novices. I only source my batteries from reliable trusted stockists, use married sets in dual mods and stacked mech mods. When you consider worldwide there are over 80000000 vapers the number of fireworks displays is very low, normally because people have not taken a few minutes to learn basic battery safety. I remember when I was early in my journey I had a mod that used 18500 batteries, now I mainly use Molicel 18650s and sometimes 21700 batteries (though for me they can make the mod just too large for comfort (I have slightly overquare hands and shorter fingers), I am an electro/mechanical engineer but had to go back to the books to learn about the batteries I now use daily to learn safety and how to not blow myself up. When it comes to chargers do NOT be tempted to buy a cheap charger on Amazon, many of then are either slow or simply not safe to use and could damage your batteries or worse, I have seen the result or a cheap charger and it was not pretty as it overheated To give an idea of how much power they contain, you can start a car with just 6 cells in para/series, I have an emergency booster pack that is 3 in series and then paralleled.

Flashlight World here in Canada sells tacky top insulators, very handy as they stay put when I heat gun the wrap. Also 250 multi coloured wraps for 20 bux. I buy batteries from flashlight supply rather than vape shops. They turn over alot more stock than vape shops so you'll get fresh batteries.

That's a really good idea, I may try that myself. Vape shops around where I live are useless, they only cater to the disposables community. The only stuff they have for true vapers is 2-3 years old because there's no demand for it anymore. I'm dealing with a set of crap Lithicore 21700's that I bought there that won't stay charged and voltage drop way too soon. Rewrapped Chinese junk probably....

I'm grabbing a new charger for next year. Been using a xtar vc4 since I started vaping yrs ago.Still works but sometimes I don't get the full amp when charging 2 on the edge bays. The charger plug side of the cable must be getting a loose spot. Anyone considering the vc4, the vc4s would be worth paying the extra imo. Better power connector, easier to find extra cables, & has 1A X4 option with correct usb psu. I was going to get a X4 but I think with vc4s using external psu, it might last longer than the x4.

Sony and Samsung, and LG, are still some of the best battery manufacturers out there. Molicell is a reputable battery manufacturer as well. They do not sell re-wrapped or old batteries as new. They have established themselves as one of the top battery manufacturers out there next to the other Big Name companies I mentioned. VTC5 are still a solid battery, but there are Sony VTC6A now.

I've been vaping somewhat hobbyist style for around a decade and still manage perfectly well with a 4 bay Nightcore D4 that itself is like 8 years old lol granted my pleasure is in single cell mechanical tube mods though so 4 is plenty to last a day and have another 4 more than charged by the time I've run through 4 cells by far, I do own a couple of hexohm dual batteries and a couple of billet boxes I use as well but again 2 in the hex 1 in the mech or billet box and a spare left over is more than enough to last until another 4 have charged, I do still have an old wismec reuleux DNA 200 from back in the day as well but that just collects dust, more power than I'd ever need and too big and bulky with 3 cells in it.

@@MDM1992 How much would you take for the Wismec? I only vape in TC and even the older Evolv DNAs are streets ahead of anything else for that, so I'm hoping to move to an entirely DNA lineup eventually. But the prices for new DNA-C mods are a bit eyewatering, and even my DNA75 of ancient and blessed vintage copes fine with a single-coil RTA, even though battery life is pretty bad. I can get a shiny new DNA100C for about £90 or a dual 250C for £120, even without any discount, but I quite like the hand-feel of a triple (I have a Drone and a Triade, both from before energy prices went nuts and almost all my disposable income evaporated).

Nothing wrong with 15A (or even 10A) cells if the power you vape at is low enough - as for many MTL vapers. Even a 10A cell is good for 35w, which is heading into restricted DL territory. MTLers can probably make use of the very high capacity low Ampere rated cells to their benefit. A Molicel M35A is an 18650 which is rated at 10A and has a capacity of 3,500mAh - Mooch tested and approved. The M50A (if you can find it) is a 21700 with 15A rating and a whopping 5,000 mAh. A pair of those in a dual 21700 mod would be good for 105w! And even better, Molicel actually approves of their use for vaping.
