Electronic expansion valve

Lets have a brief look at a more common type of electronic refrigerant flow control expansion device. The 4 phase linear pulse valve is very basic in its design but offers much needed flexibility and precise superheat control. This stepping motor type is now seen on both air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Many are apprehensive about working on or servicing them, the idea of this video is to show you how basic they are in principle

Im actually just here doing some research into making a portable driver tool for testing these, the eevmate is cool but dear and in usa where i am not so not sure if they ship to northern ireland, really having a nosy at your setup in the back lol

Great video. What sound do they make when you first switch on the air con and they initialise? I have a problem with a mini split air con freezing. Most likely low on refrigerant, but want to check the EEV before I call a licensed technician. My EEV makes clicking noises for 2-3 seconds when the unit is powered on. Is that expected?

Yes thats correct. You will hear a ticking sound durining initialisation from power up. The valves motorised head receives more closing pulses than usual to ensure it starts off in the zero step or closed position. The pcbs do not remember which step they were on during a power up

EEV can do up to 500 steps

Danfoss and Carel work on 480 pulses in refrigeration to fully open , so 480 steps. Some aircons can be higher which increases the range of closer capacity control..

Fujikoko make goes upto 2500 steeps for daikin and Samsung. Below 1000 steps refrigerant is sufficient and above 1000 to 2000 refrigerant is inadequate. 2500 steps for recovery and vacuum mode.
