Electronic Squirrel Defense 2.0 - How to keep squirrels out of your bird feeders!

This is v2.0 of my squirrel proof bird feeder design. A link to the video on the original design is below. This uses an electric fence energizer to make squirrels quickly reconsider their actions when they attempt to gain access to the bird feeders. This has been in service for several months now and there's no evidence of a squirrel ever reaching a feeder.

I hung a slinky. The pole goes thru the slinky with the bottom of slinky hanging approx 3 feet off the ground. They cannot climb.

I've got mine wired to 120vac but even that doesn't kill them. They stay well away from the post though.

Hey, the horizontal bar is 6’ from the deck railing and the total length of the vertical upright is 10’. Glad to hear that you got value out of this hope your implementation works out as well as mine has!

Is the pole grounded or do you attach a return wire to the zapper?

I have a two conductor wire running from the energizer to this pole assembly. The ground wire goes directly to the pole.

I had to repair the connection between the wire supplying the power to the electrodes on the pole once, but otherwise undefeated!

What is the wood panel at the bottom of the suet feeder for ?

It's a tail rest. Woodpeckers like to use their tails for support to stay vertical when on the sides of trees and such. The wood let's them do that when they're eating suet.

So if you enjoy watching the squirrels struggle for food is solution as long as you need to do is add hot cayenne pepper and a Hot Chili Pepper to the bird feeder it will not harm the birds but the squirrels and all other unwanted Critters don't like it cuz it's too hot for them and they will leave the bird feeder or alone

I have tried hot peppers, cumin, garlic and hot sauce. Even greased the pole with vicks vapor rub. Nothing works but a 22 rifle. I'm not gonna hot wire the pole.

I wish I could do this. I'm so frustrated with the squirrels here. They are so intelligent and persistent. They find their way to the feeder in spite of the baffle that I have.

Hey, petroleum jelly on the upright pole and you're set. Make sure the feeder is high enough and not near anything they can jump from. That's it.

@@reggierendert6494 Petroleum jelly works for a day or two maximum, or till the next rain which here it rains almost every day. That is not a permanent solution. Who has the time to apply petroleum jelly every single day? I don't, unfortunately

@@jyotikijyoti wow, you must get tons of rain! I live in NC and, at most, apply it every couple of Mos. It's probably been 6 Mos since last application but they rarely even try anymore. They try it once and they're done...they hate getting it on them. I've never seen it get washed off in rain tho.

That's a great set up. But if you ever get tired of using power, all you need is one dome baffle on the pole a foot or so below the lowest point of your feeders. They can't climb over the baffle.
