They tend to be very adaptive creatures. A friend had a feeder that was being visited by the fuzzy critters, did everything to keep them from the feeder. He finally put it on a smooth steel pole with a wide angled shroud that was covered with a thin layer of grease, they just slid off on the ground when they jumped in it. One of the squirrels went up a tree that was some distance away, went out on a very slim limb and set up an oscillation on the limb. when the limb was moving up and down at a good rate he used it as a catapult to launch himself to the feeder, landed on top of the feeder and went to feasting while he looked at us watching him. They will also work in teams to overcome an obstacle.

I just need to clarify...I don't hate squirrels. I am amused and amazed by them. They are clever little creatures and its fun to watch them analyze situations, but bird feed is for the birds and it's not cheap, especially when it gets gobbled down by furry little pigs. They don't seem to get the concept of sharing.
@helenc.90083 жыл бұрын
Also they are able to pocket large amounts of bird seed in their cheeks that they bury or hide, "squirrel away," and quickly come back for more. Where we live they will do that continuously until there's nothing left for any bird or squirrel, more than they will probably ever eat. My husband and I enjoy and admire the squirrels and put out peanuts for them but it's never enough. They are big time hoarders. Right now my husband just puts out an amount for each every day and says it's too expensive to put out any more everyday and whoever gets it, gets it. He likes all animals, as I do as well. We've tried a few things, unsucessfully, and my husband just gave up, but this looks like it is worth trying. Thank you!

I actually quite like watching squirrels, they're determined little critters. But they are funny too sometimes! We had a simple bird feeder in our yard that was just a greased pole. We saw many squirrels try to get up it but quickly realised that it wasn't possible. But on one occasion one particular squirrel seemed more determined than the rest. This squirrel spend a good while trying, and the more it tried the more agitated it got, its tail started twitching more and more, and it began chattering furiously! By the end it was totally demented and started bombing it around the yard attacking any birds that were close enough! I've never seen anything so funny in my life, I wish I'd got it on video!😂

I've watched squirrels destroy two different supposedly squirrel proof feeders. Acrobatics, and much entertainment ensued. One the rodent bounced off a window to get the proper trajectory to reach the feeder. At that point although the squirrels weight closed the feeder, it wrapped its body around the cylinder of the feeder, and proceeded to chew its way through the sides of the cylinder. Which then collapsed, and seeds galore. On another which had no place to perch, it leaped of a ledge, twisted sideways, and then drop kicked the feeder until it was upside down. Broken feeder on the ground. Again there was many seeds, and there was much rejoicing in squirrel town!

I built something like this a few years ago, except it was mounted on line, not pipe, the kind of line that is used to hang laundry. It was really the same idea, with the pipes turning and a round plate. After a month or so, I ended up seeing a successful squirrel jump 5 feet over the turning pipes and the plate, and land on the wire, which he couldn't see until he jumped. He was the only one in the yard who could do this, but then he did it every day without any problem. The line was attached on one side to a tree, on the other side it was a stake with a rosebush that grazed all around. Very effective against animals. And funnily enough, the squirrel had a kind of ritual before jumping. He would go back and forth on the line, and when he made up his mind, he would hug the tree for 2 seconds and then run and jump.

The squirrels tried and tried and tried, and after a while simply gave up. It was interesting to see a newcomer try things out, but it was an incredible feeder. Can't remember the model number but it had an outer layer where squirrels couldn't put their head through and if they put their arm through they couldn't reach the seeds. Birds had to put their head through this outer layer but could easily retrieve the sunflower seeds contained within the inner layer.

Someone asked about seeing a close-up of the bird-feeder. Sorry, I had just taken it down two days ago and dumped it. I am working on a new one. I built the old one far too heavy. I used central vac PVC pipe. Bad idea. It's too lightweight to hold a bird feeder for very long, so it began to sag.. My next one will be made from 2 inch plumbing PVC pipe. It has thicker walls. BTW, those spinners are in the plumbing dept at the Home Depot or Lowes. My next one will be taller and stick farther out from the deck.

Okay, it's about time that I showed up here. The "Tilt-A-Squirrel" feeder no longer exists. It gone because we sold our home and are in the process of moving into a new place on November 15. I have plans for new design. The "Tilt-A-Squirrel" feeder worked well up until the end. It was breached a couple of times, after a strong wind blew the whole thing up against the railing. We have moved three hours away. Will they follow? We'll see.

@quitequiet52813 жыл бұрын
@@ednaselm last winter I spent some time using a hammock with a bug netting screen as a blind and set up several suet feeders close by... at certain lighting levels I was not visible and the chickadees would not care if they could see me or not once they became accustomed... but the cardinals were too shy to approach. I also learned that they love butter... they took to eating the butter in my frying pan which I did not expect. LOL... later I would melt butter and then let it cool to a solid and throw pieces in the snow. About the size of a two stacked pennies seems perfect for them. A couple of them would eat from my hand but I don’t encourage that... it’s dangerous for them to trust people unfortunately. They were just bold as lions as I was cooking my dinner and wouldn’t wait! There was also a camouflage pattern rain tarp over the hammock. Two of them actually. It’s very wonderful to see them up close.

My squirrelproof feeder is a simple double disc, 24 inches wide, on a tall pole and far enough away from anything a squirrel can stand on that they can't jump on it from above, or crawl up the pole and get into it from below. The discs are actuall the baseplates of old marine satellite antenna dish radomes. One with the lip facing up, that's the feeding tray, and the other below it, with the lip facing down, as more of a deterrent.

Create a 'win-win" feeder - a treadmill that will dispense a set amount of feed for the greedy little fuzzballs if they simply use it enough, and hook it up to a generator. You get cheap source of energy, they get a snack ... I'm not a squirrel, really!

Can you make one that will work against my ex-wife?
@user-yw3cy8pn3b2 жыл бұрын
Just go learn the truth about the world you are living in for a few months and once you have absorbed it you will want to tell others about it - then you go to your ex-wife and say "Have you heard about this?" and then simply tell her about what you have learned again and again and every time she is in your presence tell her even more, she will think you are nuts and will also think what you say makes sense in light of what has happened over the last two years, then her mind will recoil and she will want to stick her head in the sand and whenever you say the truth to her she will want to avoid you AT ALL COSTS! ... It's worked for me, even my so-called friends keep away and all my shallow and brainless family members also and all the people I do want in my life are still here.

I like the idea of the spring for smaller birds. My feeder is up on a 4×4 post .the top half has black flashing wrapped around the post making it impossible for any animal to climb. I hVe the feeders on pulleys to let them down to fill them.there are no trees close enough for any squirrels or chipmunks to get to the feeders. I never had any problems with squirrels or anything else.
