I think those drums will come softer after some use with the pressure and rotation that may make them to adjust to different surfaces.

HF deliberately makes their model so it won't accept the endless styles of 3rd party drums that all the others use (Eastwood, Vevor, etc.)

@@chasewilliams5128 If you buy the non-Harbor Freight models you can get a brush or drum for ANYTHING. That includes wire brush drums, flexible grit-embedded nylon bristle drums, scotch-brite styles, etc.

What are the advantages over an angle grinder with a sanding disc?

You get more contact area with the work piece, so it works faster and doesn’t dig into the metal like a grinder does. The biggest advantage is this just removes the rust without removing metal. I used to use a sanding disc on a grinder, but you would see still grinder marks. This gives a nice uniform finish. Hope this helps, thanks for the question!

@@chasewilliams5128 As long as you stay away from the Harbor Freight model, you have access to hundreds of 3rd party drums, including stainless steel wire brush drums. There are probably fine ones that will get into pits. There are also flexible nylon bristle drums with embedded grits, scotch-brite type drums.

Stay away from the Harbor Freight version. You are stuck using their drums, and I think they only have 3 styles. Vevor, Eastwood, and others use the standard 4 x 4.75 drums, and you can get everything from wire brushes to buffers!

Noooo. Harbor Freight is designed so you can only use their three drums. Vervor, Eastwood and others will accept hundreds of 3rd party drum from wire brushes, to flexible nylon grit brushes, buffers, and just about anything you can imagine. I think surfacing tool is just "stupid" not worth just like drum hardwood floor sander it makes more damage than good to project. That is why is not used by any professionals tradesman .
