Guess I've been lucky because the Promedia 4.1 speaker system I bought new many years ago is still going strong. Love the subwoofer and am always amazed at the amount of bottom end punch it can produce given it's small size. Just a side note for you the next time you're trouble shooting: the electronics in some active subwoofers use a white colored glue to secure some of the electronic components to the PC board to help keep them from vibrating and breaking solder joints. The problem is, this glue when it gets old turns brown and starts to become partially conductive. You can test for this using a sensitive ohm meter. As you can imagine this causes electrical mayhem with the electronics. Scrapping off the glue is a pain and time consuming. I've successfully used silicone glue and hot melt glue as a replacement in some repairs I've done.

I had low subwoofer volume on my Promedia 2.1. Replaced 14 electrolytic capacitors on the LF amplifier board to the subwoofer and the power supply board. Resoldered any solder joints that looked cracked. Nearly all the old electrolytic capacitors tested high ESR, low capacitance or open circuit. After 15 years of being powered on 24/7 the caps dried out. The subwoofer works great again.

Great video. You've covered so much in one place. Just a reminder, unless you're sure of the source, those MOSFETs sourced in China could easily be counterfeit....even if they don't sound too bad.

Knowing zero about electronics, this video did not help me toward fixing the problem I am encountering (I have the pro media 2.1 bts and the sub works great but now both of the speakers are silent) but this was an AWESOME video nonetheless. Very fascinating watching someone who clearly understands the problem as well as how to go about testing and finding solutions. So I feel I still learned something. 👍🏼

I have my 1950's Eico 950 capacitor checker. I love the Eico 950 because I can put the capacitor under maximum electrical current load (1 volt--475 volts). It has a vacuum tube tuning eye, so if the eye opens quickly the cap is good; if the eye takes time to open the cap is so-so; if the eye doesn't open then the cap needs to be replaced. It has never failed me over the years.

I appreciate the how to on removing the LF amp board! Thank You! It might be a good idea to put a heat conductor paste between the Mosfet and Heat Sink, similar to what is used between a PC Processor and Processor Cooler. I really like that Hakko de-soldering pump! Keep up the good work! BTW, my original 2.1 has very low Bass volume output. Even at high volumes with both pots way up. But not distorted.

How common is this problem? This Klipsch Promedia 2.1 set up caught my eye as my local Walmart is selling them for $89.99 new. However if this is a common issue, I'll avoid this specific set up. I know nothing is perfect but the Logitech Z323 2.1 set up I have now has had no problems and is 6 years old. It's fine for a $40 2.1 beginner setup, but I've really gotten into listening to music and want a better experience. I would rather have something that is very reliable at the cost of sound quality rather than the other way around. Any possible ideas or suggestions would be welcome. I'm a newb when it comes to the details of 2.1 audio set ups. I don't require massive bass power and would prefer a balanced set up. I mainly listen to rock/metal music by CD and sometimes by lossless digital files if I don't have the CD. Thank you.

Its more than likely your amp that has gone out. The speakers still work fine as you can see. It seems Klipsch makes really bad amps. My right speaker just out/isnt getting powered anymore and even if I use headphones, I have to pull down on the pod to get it to work on the right side. Someone on amazon actually bought a new amp and hooked all the speakers and sub up to it and they said they got everything to work. Currently looking into that myself

first time it broke i was able to resolder the resistor while board was in place. Second time it broke i had to remove to access components on back edge of board.

I should’ve studied EECS instead of Math-CS this stuff is so much more useful. I guess I could just learn. Do you have any recommendations how to self study EE? Moreover, I’m here because my right channel is quieter than my left channel. When right reads 1.0V left reads 4.2V. I figure there’s a bad (something) in there somewhere. I’ve taken AP Physics C and the college intro Physics Electromagnetism course. So I only know theory. I don’t know what a MOSFET is. I’m not sure what testing continuity is but I have a decent idea now. Here’s my second question. How do I know what each (something) is supposed to read? How do I know what a capacitor is supposed to read? Or a transistor, or a fuse? Does it say directly? I found a diagram online but it’s not identical to my pro media 2.1 so I feel like I’m guessing. This video was fantastic thank you.

MY left speaker was cutting out for the longest time, now it just stopped working entirely. I only got these speakers i think last year, or maybe 2 years ago. I think you have the original version I have the new version with the built in engineering flaw.... There should be a class action lawsuit. I guess they lasted past the 2 year warranty period, barely. I can't live with just one speaker and the subwoofer. Apparently this is a very common problem I knew about it before I bought them, so shame on me...I should have trusted other peoples advice. Klipsch should get Asus to make their boards for them with high quality capacitors... Fuck what speakers am I going to buy now.. lol.. I could try to fix it, but I don't know if I really want to bother with it.
