Unfortunately this did not work for me. The cmd only popped up once out of 30 resets, and it closed for no reason mid changing stuff. I however realised that with the windows 10 installation media tool I could restore my system to a save from 2 weeks ago without needing the local account password. Which also means if I wanted to I could go through the startup repair and also see if that bore any fruit.

Oh my God you absolute life saver. I accidently turned all services off by mistake so essentially bricked myself out of my own account and the wifi/ethernet service wouldn't start up so Microsoft wouldn't let me into any of the recovs either. I bypassed that with an ISO tool thingy and creating an admin guest user and then slapping all the services back on again fixed my account. THANK YOU SO MUCH for this you have saved my life.

Omg thank you man. I got stuck behind a forgotten pin, no internet connection, no sign in options. I did know my password but for one or other reason there is no pin reset in advanced startup even if you have your password. I had my working fingerprints but had forgotten my password. I open the CMD command as Administrator and used the "net user" and "net user * " commands, then reseted my password without any hassle. This video helped me to solve my issue, thanks.

Thank you for your very helpful tutorial! I have used this method successfully in the past but applied in different ways. I had an issue with the Accessibility button actually opening CMD. I know that I completed the renaming steps properly and did it multiple times to be sure. I did see where @electronics&computers mentioned to one user to restart over an over until it opened. I restarted over 30 times. I finally found another thread outside of KZbin that suggested opening the Accessibility Button while in in Safe Mode. This WORKED for me! So for those struggling with the solution, try to open in Safe Mode. Thanks again.

Thank you for the comment! We still can't figure out what process is blocking the command prompt or doesn't allow to start for some time. There's no any pattern of Windows behavior which could give us a hint. It may appear after first click or after second reboot or after a whole bunch of restarts. There's no such problem with Windows 10.

Hey everyone this worked for me my computer does not have a command prompt shortcut on the sign in menu so if yours doesnt have one as well go through the reset boot menu by holding shift then reset your pc when you are done coping the util like he said the button will then trigger the command prompt. best of luck to everyone

You can't use the command prompt from the recovery mode to run those commands. That command prompt has nothing to do with your operating system.

After you renamed the files you can just cancel installation and boot your PC normally. You can reset your password only from the CMD that runs under normally booted windows. If it was possible to reset password from a USB bootable command prompt or from diagnostics mode, that would be too easy.

Sometimes you have to restart your PC up to 10 or more times to make it work. Don't give up. Start your PC, wait for 30 seconds and press the button. If it doesn't work, restart again wait for 30 seconds and press the button. Repeat the process until you get what you need.

I made the utilman/cmd switch following your excellent instructions. Now the utilman.exe and cmd.exe files are no longer listed in the windows32 directory - only utilman.exe.mui and cmd.exe.mui in system32\en-us and utilman1.exe in system32. I'm using Windows 11. would windows have changed the extension/location or hidden the two exe files?

Happy to help! Not sure why cmd.exe has disappeared from your system. Check if your command prompt works now. If not copy that cmd file from any PC with the same windows version.

Once you created a new user account, restart your PC so you could just but normally and choose a new user account to start your Windows.
