I tore down and repaired our dryer today using info from your excellent tutorial. After checking things, I found a spade connector from the heater coil to the thermostat had come loose from the wire and burned some of the insulation off. I replaced the connector with a new one and after a test run everything seems to be working fine again. Without watching the video, I would have just guessed and bought a heater coil thus wasting money. Thanks for helping us learn!

Quick question if your still there, I have not continuity through my inlet control thermister on a GE electric dryer. It operates fine until you go to start a cycle in which case it will just never start. Also in the diagnostic test of the drum it will not rotate. Is this likely the thermister causing a fault that will not allow the drum to turn? Like if yes, down vote for no

This was an EXCELLENT video and it helped me diagnose my problem -- the power supply. I had an intermittent faulty 30v double breaker. This is the most comprehensive repair/troubleshooting tutorial I have found in my search for solutions to repair my family's dryer. We have a Whirlpool Estate manufactured with a three-prong power cord. We had to replace the three-prong with a four-prong cord after we moved to our current address three years ago. We've owned the dryer for about 11 years now; it's simple and sturdy so we'd like to keep it as long as possible. Recently, it wouldn't completely dry a load without two to three runs. It had been awhile since I last opened up the housing to clean it so I decided to complete this task first before checking any of the electrical components. The instant I turned it on after closing it there was a flash and an audible pop behind the panel covering the power cord terminal. When I reopened this portion, I discovered the black cord melted and separated beneath the spade connector. This is not the first time I have opened our dryer to clean it so I am lost as to what and how this happened. Your thoughts on what happened (including if it may have been something I did while cleaning it) and what I can do to fix it (if possible) would be greatly appreciated. Again, thank you for the fantastic tutorial; I will be checking out your other videos.

Since my Whirlpool dryer went down because of no heat, *I've been watching a lot of how-to and troubleshooting videos, and by far, this is the best video I've seen.* Even though, I still haven't found the problem of why the heat isn't working on my dryer, this video is very informative and easy to follow. So far, I've ruled out the voltage to the dryer, the thermal cut-off fuse, hi-limit thermostat, and the thermal fuse. I'm just about ready to rule out the dryer timer/motor and the heater element. I'm just hoping that I find the problem before I have to get to that motor under the drum. A note of interest... my dryer is only 2 years old. Thank you, for a great video!

Very good video. I've checked all of that. Replaced the timer, start switch, thermal fuses, direct wired the motor and it and the motor switch work properly. But it still won't start. When the timer is set on 3 of the 4 off positions and the start button is pushed, the end of cycle buzzer will buzz. In any other position on the timer, nothing happens at all. Going to try a tone probe next to see if there's a short in any of the wiring.

Thank you for an excellent video. My parents owned an appliance repair store, and I often feel like I channel my dad when repairing, and you remind me of that. I've run into a problem that your video does not seem to address. On a Frigidaire with a momentary start knob, it will normally start after briefly holding the knob. But now I need to hold it for a long time; the dryer starts, but may stop if I release the knob. It does start after a few tries with a long hold. Suggestion?

When you tested the element for a short to ground you placed a lead on the dryer body but the element housing was disconnected/removed from ground. Just a couple of bloopers. Otherwise it is obvious to me that you know what it's all about.

I was wondering why my dryer has 2 operating temp thermostats in lower left. They both look the same with the 4 pronged thermostat. My dryer is a Kitchenaid Superba and it works but it has only one temp (hot) and does go to the cool off cycle when timer reaches the last 10min of drying. However, I do have a delicate, and other cycles besides the towels (hot) cycle that when I set to still just blows the hot air??? Is.this because one of my operating temp thermostats is bad or again, why do I have two? No other dryer video I've watched has more than one. Thank you for posting such a detailed video on troubleshooting dryer operation because I learned alot!!
@electronicsNmore8 жыл бұрын
What you describe does sound like 2 thermostats. Look for the schematic(wiring diagram) in your dryer. Normally it is behind a cover or a piece of paper taped inside the unit. If the unit always blows hot no matter what setting, then there is a problem with the timer control or switch inside the motor.

I replaced the thermal fuse with the code F40 flashing on Kenmore Elite OasisST and it worked for 1 day then the F40 code came back on. So now with the video I am going to replace the thermal fuse & tempresure switch. Thanks for the video very helpful. I just have to buy the parts. Where is the best place to buy these parts?
@electronicsNmore5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the thermal fuse blows if the temp switch/thermostat fails. Make sure nothing is clogged up with lint restricting airflow.

looks like my motor start coil is shot. no ohm reading. got a normal 2 ohm reading on the main windings. problem is it won't start. was running fine, so makes sense. thanks for the great well made video!
@electronicsNmore5 жыл бұрын
If you tested the correct terminals on the motor, and the capacitor is good, then yes, you likely need to replace.
@FPVREVIEWS5 жыл бұрын
Where is the capacitor located?
@electronicsNmore5 жыл бұрын
@@FPVREVIEWS You should be able to easily locate it by looking for the cylindrical plastic body.

How to test? Assuming I can locate it.

Should I disconnect those wire to check continuity? Great video fam.
@electronicsNmore6 жыл бұрын
Make sure the machine is unplugged, any capacitors are discharged, then test for continuity. If a test fails, then try again with the wires disconnected.

Great video. I will be replacing my Operating Temperature Thermostat and Thermal Fuse. The only concern I have is The timer motor is only showing a little over 1000 ohms. On the schematics the readings are showing the opposite of what the schematics call for. (closed when it should show open and vice versa) This is only happening when checking the continuity between the terminal named TM and the other terminals. I believe the TM must stand for Timer Motor.... Does it matter which side of the timer you check from? Regardless I bypassed the fuse for about three seconds just to verify the drier would work if it had continuity and it did. Thanks again and if someone could chime in about the TM reading I am getting I would greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the great video. Our Maytag 12-year-old dryer produces heat but has a burning smell on regular and delicate cycles but not on the air fluff cycle. Would this more likely be the cycling thermostat that is on the blower housing or the limit thermostat and/or thermal fuse on the heating element?. If the cycling thermostat, is there another way to test the continuity at the upper temp limit without an electric skillet? Thank you in advance!
@electronicsNmore8 жыл бұрын
Make sure there is good airflow, and no blockages.

I clean the air duct system fully every year with a duct brush on the end of a drill. I just did that again for this year, so I know that's not the issue. I did find a large lint ball under the motor, which I removed. The heating element, thermostat, thermal fuse all have continuity. The cycling thermostat has continuity while cold and none while heated on an electric skillet (borrowed from a friend). I have blown out every bit of dust I could with air compressor, and vacuumed. It's now cleaner than the rest of my house, but I am still getting a very hot burning smell, but no smell on air fluff. I greatly appreciate your thoughts. The blower fan spins freely and produces good air flow.

In the thought it may help someone else... After doing all as I outlined above, I inadvertently found out that the prongs on the plug were scorching hot after a short test run. I do not have a way to post pictures here, but the outlet had arced (sp) and was melting the plastic housing where the one of the wires was attached. Thank God we did not have a fire! I replaced the outlet and all is good!

excellent video, I still haven't figured out what would cause one problem though..the dryer is back to back with a double oven, separated by a stud wall. The dryer is on a separate 240 breaker. When you turn on the dryer, the clock on the oven goes off, like it lost power and then blinks till I reset it. This is a recent occurance. I suspect the windings in the motor but not sure. I have checked both breakers and wireing and plugs, can find no fault on either. Ground wire to house is good. No other schisms anywhere else. Any ideas? Thank you again for the training video...
@electronicsNmore8 жыл бұрын
If you measure the AC voltage at the oven receptacle when you turn on the dryer, and it drops way down from 240-250V, then you definitely have a wiring problem. Sounds like a loose wire or high resistance connection in the breaker panel.

thanks for response. I will check it out...right now the dryer is not running. Gotta go outta town for a while. I know you are a busy dude, hopefully I can get this squared away soon. thanks again

Great video, I have a gfdn110ed2ww GE dryer. My dryer is not drying in low temp mode and in high temp mode it takes a long time I have tested the coil, the thermistor and fuse and everything seems to be in order. The problem is the inner coil is not heating. Don't know if the coil is bad or the Circuit board is bad. How do I diagnose this
@electronicsNmore3 жыл бұрын
Either a faulty thermostat/temp sensor, a faulty element, or the switch inside the motor is dirty/faulty
@kevins36463 жыл бұрын
@@electronicsNmore thanks for the response. The motor rotates does that not rule out the switch inside the motor?
@electronicsNmore3 жыл бұрын
@@kevins3646 Usually if the switch inside the motor is dirty or faulty, the heat wont work at all. Take the switch apart and check it.
