What’s the first thing to test if nothing happens when you plug it in? I found a newer frigidair and nothing happens. The thing looks like it fell out a window. I laughed my ass off. But. This ac is exactly the same as one I bought a year ago. So if some of the parts are good I wanna salvage. Nice vid. I should be able to test lots of components now anyway.

This is the most comprehensive video I have ever seen. Thanks to you I got my Frigidaire 18500 btu wall ac unit working today. I was about to buy a new one for $699, then I decided to watch your video. Since I am not very handy, I was willing to try a few of the test. I started out with the easiest one. I turned on the unit, the fan was turning as usual but no cooling. The compressor did not kick. I went outside pry open the cover enough for my chisel to touch the body of the compressor. I wacked it a little. And voila, the buzzing sound of the compressor was better than that of any performer in the x-factor or America got talents. The temperature inside as I am typing this is a wonderful 71 degrees. just the way I like it. The entire 1200 square foot house is cooled. Thank you so much, you are a savior today and an inspiring teacher.

A 2007 Samsung window air conditioner stopped working. Following your great instructions, I found a bad capacitor. These were readily available and now it runs fine. I have a bad back, so lifting this 34 pound machine was out of the question. I put a tall stool next to the window and laid one end of a ladder on top of the stool, and the other end of the ladder on the floor. I put a small wood board on the ladder and was able to slide the machine up/down to the window with ease. Saved my back!!!

You are a great teacher! Thanks for helping me better understand the anatomy and troubleshooting of an a/c unit. I appreciate it! I took my unit apart with confidence and found the issue immediately: there was a dead wasps nest!!! They had built it around the motor and fan, which they warped the plastic fan. But that's okay because everything works and it's an easy cheap fix! Thanks again!

I appreciate the detail and true step by step instructions. The video I watched before finding this one, the guy says things like "I got my multimeter and tested a few things" and didn't show anything he did! Thanks to you, I probably won't die from touching the capacitor prematurely. I was also glad to see that your AC is just like mine, though with a different problem.

After surfing KZbin for solutions to an ac issue and getting sparse information and less progress, i watched your video. Most excellent, but that’s not what’s worth noting. I rarely subscribe to a channel, but since your name includes “Nmore”, and because you are one rare, excellent instructor, I’ll subscribe and check out your other work, hoping to come across a similar challenge among the many I suspect we both face fixing instead of dumping things. All my best.

Great video. I systematically went thru the steps u identified. Cleaned out all of the rat droppings, prob filled my shop vac. Thermostat checked ok, switch worked, power to the compressor good, capacitor passed my test using upgraded meter, impedance on the compressor wiring was ok. When I reattached COMMON, START and RUN, it worked so I concluded that the connectors oxidized after 27 years. Removed again, sprayed with contactor cleaner, hopefully I get another 27 years.

I'm only at 5:53 and I'm very impressed! I' helped a neighbor that's a senior with COPD and she purchased last year a new 6000 BTU window unit that I installed. 2 weeks later she calls and there was a problem. The compressor was running but fan didn't spool up. I reached in to see if the motor seized and spun the squirrel cage and to my surprise the motor continued to spin but only as fast as I could spin the cage, once the cage was spinning it kept going at that low RPM until it was shut off but again refused to start on it's own so I actually don't know what the hell the problem is. She couldn't get a warranty replacement because she bought it at SEARS so she replaced it again and gave me the first one. Now I have another neighbor with breathing problems and I would like to give her this system but I needed to know how much it would cost to fix (I'm going to give it to her as a surprise she's on a pension) but have no idea what the trouble is. I googled for help and your video was a suggestion. Never seen a better explanation of a DIY video ever! Sub'd! I will be definitely be reviewing your channel and I will be a contributor in the future. Perfect attitude for a KZbin channel owner. Thanks, I hope to test the capacitor this week. Superb video!

I have a LG with a circuit board and believe I need a new one (so I bought one for $80.00 ) because the compressor does not turn off when the thermostat reaches correct temp. If you could do a vid on one of these POS units it would be great . I own a lot of broken ones. Thanks, John

Phenomenal. An obvious authority clear concise directions without all the unnecessary fluff music and b.s.. I am not sure if you used a script? If not you are a total phenom? If you did thiw is a fine example why using a script makes all the difference... Anyhow really excellent video thank you so much!

Thank you - very thorough. I've replaced many CAP's and a couple motors on heat pumps, but this is my first go at a window unit. The compressor isn't starting, so I'm assuming the CAP is bad. I'll be replacing the window unit later today, and if the existing works, I'll pop it into my outdoor shed for when I want some cooling.

Do you know how long I have been trolling AC video's, in the hope of finding some help? Google and the manufacture offered no assistance what's so ever. This tutorial explains in depth and in lay man's terms, the process(s) and highlighting the safety to be observed when testing each component!! F*"king awesome Dude... It's unselfish individual's such as yourself, that give up their own time to impart some knowledge to us "Dumbass's", so we can fault find, hopefully fix and still have 10 finger's,10 toe's and not end up like Eduard "De"l Delacroix from The Green Mile.... Cheers from Down Under...

I love your videos and I’v followed you for years. I’ve come back to this video a few times per year since you posted it… When troubleshooting units for friends or family. Would be awesome if you made another video about window units, looking at one that has a circuit board controller. A lot of the boards fail, most commonly because of a bad electrolytics or the board mounted relay. You could go over diagnosing those issues, repairing, or if that fails… How to hotwire the machine and have it run on medium settings when plugged in without the need of a circuitboard. Essentially bypassing the circuitboard. I’ve done a board bypass on many units, probably over a dozen. But two very important things to consider… Don’t hotwire it so that it’s always on highest fan speed. Low or medium fan speed will give it a much longer life. Also, you can use a timed outlet for 15 to 30 minutes… So that the unit doesn’t stay on longer than it should and overheat. Or you can actually buy an outlet that has a thermostat built-in. So when the area around the thermostat reaches a certain temperature it automatically cuts power. ALSO… I always add a very high amperage switch in between the wall outlet and GFCI cord coming from the unit. That way cutting on and off isn’t causing arcing by plugging or unplugging the unit. Instead using a very high amperage switch in between. Usually rated 25% greater than the actual starting amps needed. That’s a much safer approach, and still allows someone to remove the circuitboard and have a more reliable unit. Love your videos! And would love a follow up video! These things can be had for free, only a few years old… You can find them everywhere. From on the side of the road to your local scrapyard or landfill. I can’t tell you how many dozens of units I found that are less than five years old, new were close to $1000, and only need minor tweaking or troubleshooting.

Great job explaining everything! Could you show the parts like the blown fuse, the step down transformer/ power supply? I had tied into a romex wire that my late dad had pulled off the 220v dryer plug I didn't check the voltage just assumed it was 110 wrong it was 220! Now my 110 window a/c will not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I guess never assume!! Thanks!!
