Suspect a faulty throttle position sensor for engine problems? Look no further. In this video I will explain how a (TPS) Throttle Position Sensor works, how to test one, and also open one up to see what is inside. The sensor being tested in this video is a 3 pin sensor.

Excellent explantation. Exactly as you said. I tested on my 2000 Accord V6 w 150,000 miles. Perfect count-up on the multimeter from .45 to 4.56 dcv (by the 1/100s!), so it's not the TPS. I've already replaced the MAP sensor, cleaned throttle body (with throttle body cleaner, toothbrush and rag), replaced air filter, checked air intake passages from filter to TB. Runs beautifully after warmed up, but super hesitant acceleration when cold (I live in Florida). Never stalls, but feels like it will, until warm. No codes. Thanks again.

Excellent video on how to look for dead spots in your TPS. Not all vehicles are the same, the TPS can have a different expected voltage range depending on vehicle. Not all TPS tolerances are between 0V-5V. Consult a workshop manual for the correct specifications for your vehicle year/model/engine configuration. The TPS design and expected values can change per year on the same model. Always, always, look up the correct specifications for your specific vehicle. Great video.

I have a question for you here's what I have 2001 nissan frontier 2.4 automatic 1 when the rpm hits around 2100 I get erratic response from the truck, doesn't accelerate, starts deceleration. If I shift to neutral I get a fresh start, and I try to stay away from that rpm. I've changed the MAF, the TPS and the fuel pump and I line filter wich was very clogged. I'm hitting a brick wall any idea would be useful. Thank you for the detailed video. Juan

This is a professional level explanation and demonstration. Really impressive. I have a 6 pin sensor and I'm getting 5v on both ends and a 0.83v reading from the other two pins. I can't tell if that's proper spec. The sensor is disconnected during this reading. So I'm testing the female connector pins leading to the throttle body. Can anyone tell if I'm doing this correctly or not? The car is a 2004 350Z Nissan.
@electronicsNmore

That's a wideband sensor. You need to find an online service manual for your make/model vehicle to identify each pin. Thanks for watching!

On my 1987 Chevy Celebrity the TPS went bad . There was also another code for the MAP sensor . What happened was the TPS pulled down the voltage to the MAP sensor . If you check a wiring diagram , they use the same line . Not all cars are same , but it is not uncommon to have them both on the same line . In general , if a component goes bad and there are other items on the same circuit , it can pull down the voltage that supplies other items , depending on how it malfunctions .

I finally understood how it works lol what a great explanation and demonstration. I highly suspect my TPS is failing. Whenever I floor the gas pedal, the rev goes up but the car doesn't move. Transmission shifting is terrible. The gas pedal sometimes stops working completely! If I understand it well, if I run these tests in my car and the TPS is really faulty, I should be able to "floor" the gas pedal and see the voltage not going up, right? Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the Great Video. You just earned 1 more subscriber. Quick question: On my signal wire it's giving me a very low voltage reading (0.01) and when I press on the gas pedal the voltage reading stays the same it doesn't go up. The power wire reads 5v. Checked for any codes and nothing comes up.

Great video. I have a 1997 Saturn SL1with a standard 5 speed trans. The idle would sometimes go to 2000 to 2500 rpm when rolling to a stop with the clutch pushed down then would come back to norm 750 ish rpm. I pulled off the throttle body and removed the tps and iacv to clean a ton of carbon off the throttle body. I also replaced the iacv with an $8 ebay one, thinking that was originally causing the high idle problem. There was never a cel on. When I put it back together I put the tps on and had to twist it to get the screw holes to line up and it felt crunchy like I hyperextended the spring. It turned on the cel with code po122 and runs bad with high idle. I installed a new Walker tps and there is no change other than it loops at idle when the rpm comes down. My code reader is not able to clear the po122 code. I checked voltage with connector disconnected and I get 5.02v on one wire and .03v on other. I back probed with it plugged in to sensor and get 5.08v on one and the other shows .15v at idle and 3.94v at wot. I thought it might be the plug so I poked the volt meter lead in the connecter points and tried to push them closer together but No change in voltage readings. Advice please?

is that a sonata 2005? looks exactly like mine, now i have to change that sensor, the crankshaft and camshaft, do you have a video of those? to know which one are them ? great video BTW

Mine is a 2003 V6/2.7L....same car basically. Crankshaft sensor: raise front of vehicle on stands, remove the long plastic shield under radiator, then reach up into the block facing the cooling fan. One bolt holds it in place. The camshaft sensor is on the drivers side of the engine, between the throttle body and ignition coil packs. Be sure to watch today's video below and share.
