Tried it myself on a 17" HP Pavilion. I had the same thoughts on hot glue being too soft: Instead I used a 2K mixed epoxy. How wrong I was ! The epoxy can not be altered once cured. Ended up with a mess and the lid could not close fully ... I broke the display ... 😳 You HAVE to put all your will, patience and strength into such a job ☹ Will never do it again.

Hello Sorin, I also own a computer shop and I would really want to suggest you to try epoxy resin for those type of repairs because it is a lot stronger, less messy and easier to apply. I always use it and it holds "a dracu de bine". Keep going because I really enjoy your videos and to be honest I would come to work with you and learn from you in a heartbeat.

A two part epoxy is the proper way to fix this with no comebacks. JB weld if you have 24 hours or JB quick if you only have 4 hours. I hope the owner doesn't attempt to open it after it sat in a hot car.

U-POL Easy body filler might be the answer to some. It dries really quickly and goes rock hard in minutes. It sticks like anything. Works on lugs and self tap screws. Better than Araldite but just as messy as needs mixing up etc. I just tried on a broken Asus lappy case, ripped the hinge lugs out of both sides to break it on purpose to make this experiment. Mix up U-POL filler (it smells like it might work :-) ), paste it into the broken bits/holes and stick the lugs back in where they should go. Put self tapper screws where they should go in the sticky stuff. Wait a bit for the filler to go off and take any self tappers out. You then have a new thread for those when it's completely dry. I only just did this as a test so it's not completely dry, but it is NOT going to come off easily already, it's also much harder than hot glue. I hope that help's someone else.
@kblectronix
@kblectronix 5 жыл бұрын
Left it a bit longer, put the screws back in, works 100%, you can also put the filler in the holes where the lugs used to be and use some suitable replacement self tap screws and it's still strong. The filler left on the paper I mixed it on is still a little bit 'crumbly' so will check again tomorrow. I think this is a good solution for sticking broken plastic bits, charger ports etc down in laptops. It's a lot more solid than hot glue and marginally as much work. Smell's like Evostik anyway so happy days! :)

Hot glue is definitely better for this than epoxy. Every epoxy I tried would fail after a short while or it would be a job like this where opening the laptop after without breaking it would be impossible. I would love to see one being re-opened though after having been made into a hot-glue sandwich. :)))

Hot glue NOT for hinges buddy. Won't come close to holding. Not even a strong 3500 PSI plastic epoxy will hold the hinges in place of screws. However, I have a much better way to fix those hinge mounts and it's as good if not better than screws, if your interested. It takes a little more time but you end up with a great hold, better hinge mounting and perfect appearance. It's like putting it back together but better and stronger and looks just like it did before it broke.
