I love that there are NO SMARTPHONES in this classroom. I think that makes a huge difference in participation and engagement. They also do not have laptops. The basic content and the teacher are all awesome, of course.

More details would be appreciated, such as the lay-out of those work-sheets ... It is a bit too general.

Thank you! I'm trying to see this in the context of "scaffolding" and it's just all over the place.

this instruction made me cringe actually. Spears and guns - yikes - we need better literature to teach children from these countries because these kinds of tropes are problematic "Cultural Competency" is needed here.

Interesting!! I am watching this video for school purposes and, the main point of my assignment is how to make this lesson more culturally responsive. I agree with you that it needs more Cultural Competency.

Something I always found problematic with this idea of “cultural inclusivity “, specifically for ELLs is text selection. If I know my students derive from a war-torn country, is it really necessary for them to learn it through literacy ? I always feel that there’s this trope of teaching immigrant students about their oppression as opposed to their actual culture.

I was thinking the same thing about cultural competency. They have kids who are from another country, learning another language and there's not a lot of how they're working that in.

It is part of the conflict in many African countries. Yes before spears but since many years ago they use AK 47. Those kids are wonderful.
