Pretty useful information! I noted that around 5:20 in the video Karen gets all but one right on the OR gate. When bridging the gap between logic gates / programming it's always great to just say the logic out loud and it will all make sense!

one thing worth noting about building logic with transistors is that it is possible to drive bigger loads. ex: ICs are generally limited to the low mA range, but those small TO-92 transistors can drive typically 200-700mA (depending on the specific type of transistor), and bigger power-transistors can typically drive 5-10 amps, or a little more if using MOSFETs (NPN vs MOSFET being its own set of tradeoffs). for some uses, relays or contactors are also useful (ex: for driving bigger loads where fast switching speeds are not needed), but face more issues with size/cost.

Ahh, Logic Gates... Learned them at my electronics class at school. Designed some crazy stuff with them, they are so useful even for more complex stuff. Great Video!

Minecraft is awesome for that purpose. I got interested in minecraft the same time I was studying digital logic at university and Minecraft helped me understand it because you can easily visualize it.

MC is great because of that. It was the only reason I played it. While the others where building their houses I was building electromechanical stuff, e.g. to automate almost every production process. :D

Hey Ben I'm 16 and just started to learn to solder. I love your poartables you made but that's to advanced for me to do, so I had a namco plug and play that I thought would be a good place to start to make my first poartable but I don't know how to wire a screen to it or an analog stick and tack switches to make a D pad to replace the joy stick. Can you please help me?

15:20 isn't this rather NAND gate? If the transistors are not powered the current flows through the LED to the ground?! Maybe I am confused, sorry...

Ben how could you forget the Buffer? It might not be anything fancy like the others but it does allow you to change the output voltage if needed. For instance if your signal is 5v but the device needs 3.3v then you would use a buffer to bring it down. Resistors work too, but it's still another gate to consider.

This was a great video! It was a great Refresher from what I've learned back when I was going through NRI courses. But you have taken it yet further. I can see a lot of that was related to the pull up and pull down resistors. makes a lot of sense although I still feel like I'm new to this pull-ups and pull Downs. Great job! Oh and Karen looks really cute with that new hair style!!:-)

Hello Ben, I am an ardent follower of your show and I never miss an episode. I was wondering if you could do a video on writing drivers for microcontrollers? Especially extremely popular ones like the PIC32, the Atmega, or the ATtiny? I guess it will be a great learning experience for the viewers. Thanks in advance for taking this idea into consideration. Have a great day! :)

"When the voltage is lower it takes less time to change the state" I did not know that, and I would have thought the opposite, why is less voltage faster then? Interesting.
@emilcarr7190
@emilcarr7190 8 жыл бұрын
The voltage takes time to climb up to 5v, so when using 1.8v it only has to climb up to 1.8, which takes less time.

From my understanding delays in logic circuits are mainly due to the parasitic capacitances and resistances of the transistors/mosfets inside the circuits. So in an rc circuit the rising is governed by (V = Vo(1 - e^-t/RC))), so the time taken for V to rise to Vo is only proportional to RC. This means the actual supply voltage has little effect. If anything use a more complex model and using the same turn on voltage of mosfet/transistor, a lower supply voltage would lead to slower operating speeds. I think the reason for lowering the voltages in new devices is for less power dissipation and thus cooling needed. The reason for a faster operating speed in these new, lower voltage devices is due to new technology (smaller transistors/mosfets), so i think the link between supply voltage and speed is more a coincidence. This is my understanding though so i could defiantly be wrong.

+xKatjaxPurrsx I asked you a question, you could answer it anyway you like... How did I give the impression that you should entitle me 'sir' and that you are inferior? I grew up with 4 sisters whom are my equals in every way (Maybe except the physical aspect as I am more lean and muscular by nature and they have more "energy storage" and the fact that I don't have a womb). You are taking a huge piss on hundreds of years of actual equality struggle - In my own honest opinion. Its like you are trying hard to get offended... In a real patriachy there wouldn't be need for "mansplaining", you would simply get smacked if you didn't do what was ordered and women would have no need for knowledge - Like it is in many places in the Middle East and Africa today.
