@brycenwilliams.31858 жыл бұрын
He should do that
@MAYERMAKES8 жыл бұрын
+Cliff Hartle I think it's easier to use an acceleration sensor inside the dice. the orientation of the board gets mapped to the faces of the dice and is transmitted via bluetooth link....even with smd components on a custom board the dice would be pretty large...
@MarcinKurczalski8 жыл бұрын
+MAYER MAKES just thought about it too, but one issue with electronic-loaded dice is it can easily be biased.... For the moment being I'd still give it a go. Actually this dice-issue inspires me to think of a whole virtually augmented game I could use it in xD Or maybe just use image recognition- for this project it could be simple field with plexi and camera under it, shoots a photo and counts the dots :P Both ways it's rather and idea to upgrade than solve on build-stage IMO.
@chartle18 жыл бұрын
***** I too though of image recognition but from above. But that would kind of get in the way.
@kedwa308 жыл бұрын
That's not a bad idea, but what happens when one falls on the floor? How long should it wait to read the result as the final throw? I suppose it could wait until it could read both dice at the same time. You could also have dice that can sense how they land and use an ESP8266 to send that via wifi to the board. Of course the problem with embedding any electronics into dice is keeping the dice balanced and also, can the electronics handle the forces of being tossed around. A third way would be to use a camera along with the right software to sense how the dice land. It's possible to have a camera underneath the board sensing the light wavelength that passes through the board.

I would have gone with a CNC machine type thing, still using the magnets, that way you could move the pieces almost anywhere in any direction. Programming the paths would probably be a bit more time consuming but I bet it would be worth it. Oh, and bluetooth connected dice too. Anyway, what really got my attention was the power gloves. If the ultrasonics were used to track the orientation and position of the glove could something similar be used to track the location of specific items in a room such as battlebots, drones, remote control/slot cars and, my want, model trains? Sort of like a mini GPS system. Would this be even possible with an accuracy of about 1/2 inch?

Use nonferrous material for the normal balls and then metal balls for the game pieces. A sensor at each intersection can let the ball move one more time if its metal so the metal balls stay on their own tracks. A magnet in the game piece should let it follow the metal ball. Sketchup has not worked on my computer since the last update, maybe I should be fixing that.

You could've attached magnets to strings, and them to stepper motors and create guide paths for it, instead of servos. This would allow for more freehand paths.
@pratherat8 жыл бұрын
I guess there's no turning back, but here's what I wished had happened: 1) Keep the intertwined paths! Way more interesting. Ben has plenty of experience with X/Y axes. Use an electromagnet to control the whole playing surface, rather than permanent magnets in fixed arcs. 2) Top your display with a clear dome paperweight, and mask the remaining screen. It'll be round like the original, and give the illusion of depth. Your digital dice are also inside, "Sorry!" style, and activated by pressing the dome, the whole display rig resting on tact switches.
@ALitleBitSpecial8 жыл бұрын
With the intertwined paths the problem is pieces too close together or especially two pieces occupying the same square. You would unintentionaly move pieces you don't want to
@pratherat8 жыл бұрын
I don't know the rules, or if there are any "official" rules, but I assumed that if the path is blocked, the player lose a turn. I can see how close pieces might be affected. Maybe pieces could be temporarily relocated while the move is made? And try to design your electromagnet to be precise in its selection.

Hello Ben! I have been a fan of your show for some time, and I would very much like your or someone's advice. I see that you use a Makerbot 3d printer regularly on your show, but I have been having a significant problem with mine. The problem is that when I try to print high-detail parts, the printer nozzle jams and I end up with only a tiny amount of plastic being extruded - like a ghost of the original part or a spider web.
@johnnicklas21568 жыл бұрын
I have contacted the Makerbot people about this, bought a set of new anti-stick coated metal nozzles, taken the whole Makerbot 2 printer apart, lubricated and cleaned everything, put it back together, and still the problem persists. The extruder stepper motor appears to be working (I can see it through the spring) but the plastic filament will not move down and so the printer clicks as the teeth of the wheel slip on it. I have tried pushing the filament down - it requires almost as much force as I can apply.
@johnnicklas21568 жыл бұрын
I have also tried printing at different temperatures: 215, 220, 225, 228, and 210, and this adjustment seemed to make a difference momentarily, but then the printer again jammed a few dozen layers above where it had jammed previously. What I believe is happening is that a glob of PLA plastic is melting inside the extruder nozzle, and acting as a sort of buffer for the filament that is trying to be forced down - the new filament must be melted first to be incorporated into the glob (hence the increased force required to push it down), and then at the bottom of the nozzle the pressure is much reduced so that only a bit of plastic dribbles out.
@maker_karen17858 жыл бұрын
When did you buy your Makerbot/How long have you had it? Which model is it?
@johnnicklas21568 жыл бұрын
My family bought it in late 2013, it has only 114 hours on it, and it is a Replicator 2 with a high-lubricity nozzle (mk8 .4 mm). It can still print mostly-solid objects fine, but the problem lies with fine-detail structures like text.

So what's the problem with having bigger pieces? You said that the magnet loses the piece but the pieces should move very slowly, almost creep to the next spot. If they just fly to the next place on the board it doesn't seem so magical anymore. Can't you also make a drawer or something on it to store the pawns so you can make them bigger? It seems like you're cutting a lot of corners and losing focus, but I understand you can only do so much in the time you have to film. I hope it has sound effects.

how about having 6 sided rfid dice?
@carlobensi22678 жыл бұрын
+Barry Adamson, 2 problems initially come to mind. 1 you would need to roll the dice on a very specific (small) area of the board and 2. the interference of the other 5 rfid tags might pose too much of an issue. I think Bluetooth with axis sensors would be the way to go.
@Anzelus8 жыл бұрын
+Carlo Bensi not a bad idea with the bluetooth with axis sensors. The issue I think would come with that is, either the dice would have to be larger than normal dice, or you would have to find a tiny battery, a tiny bluetooth receiver, a tiny micro controller, and a g-sensor all in less than 1/2 of a cubic inch.
@carlobensi22678 жыл бұрын
+Barry Adamson yes, 1/2 inch would be very difficult, especially using off the shelf components. Since this is basically a prototype, i think, a 1 inch die would be fine (still hard) or even a 2 inch die. Also have to figure out how to balance it so it's not biased, the smaller it is the harder this will be.
@Anzelus8 жыл бұрын
+Carlo Bensi yes, balance would have to be perfect. So we would (atleast initially) be looking at about a 2" die.

You know, as I watch more and more neat projects from so many different people in so many different fields of interest via KZbin and other such places, I'm coming to realize something. Big companies are bullshit. Sure, they can crank out 900 million identical replicas of a single thing. But when it comes to coming up with clever new things, or individually customized things, they're fundamentally incapable. All of these companies have the individuals necessary to do the innovative, creative things... but their structure and the way they operate hobbles them. All of it stems from the fact that the problem of distribution used to be monstrously difficult to solve... and it now trivial. Solving the problem of distribution, the simple-sounding problem of getting things from location A to location B (from the worker creating a thing to the consumer who wants to buy it) was the most valuable thing anyone could do for a century. But now it's almost worthless. In order to solve it previously, we had to accept the limitations of large organizations and centralized factories and assembly lines and such. But now, if one person can create something, they can distribute it to any person in the world for very little cost. And tools of production drop in price essentially every hour. How long will it take for people to realize that all that overhead of huge companies, and all of the restrictions on what they can do, is no longer paid for by solving the problem of distribution?
