Thank goodness for Elementary. They showed that a coherent looking ecosystem on Linux was possible. Without them I don't think Gnome and KDE would've made the leaps they've made in the recent years. Even if they're getting surpassed in usability and neatness now, they still blazed the trail. Good to hear that Gnome Web is shaping up into a functional web browser. I'd like to use a web browser that natively integrates nicely into the whole Gnome system. Perhaps it might finally be ready for prime time. Don't worry though Nick, I too am still clinging to Firefox like a stubborn fool. I'll staunchly make sure that Chromium doesn't achieve their monopoly.

I used eOS quite long time, long time ago, started when it still use 0.x numbering. However the hardware requirement increased by each version and I ended up moving to XFCE, even after I upgraded my PC 2 years ago. While I have enough power to run even the heaviest DE now, XFCE is just too pleasant to use. What I loved from eOS was how polished it is. Moving to eOS from Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, I was blown by the QoL build in by eOS team. Touchpad support was especially fantastic. Many little things that eOS did, can't be found on other distros at the time, making eOS absolutely pleasant and joy to use. However, watching this video, it seems they need something more to give them edge to other distros now, because other distro is improving so much that they basically reaching eOS level of polish now. I may try installing this distro for nostalgia reasons later, and see how much it changed from the last time I use it.

On the note about AppCenter: I get the frustration, though I feel it’s about framing to some extent. It seems to me that AppCenter is aiming to be more like the App Store on iOS/macOS rather than a package manager like Gnome Software. In that respect/framing, it seems to work as designed. I’d also like to note that I’m not necessarily saying that this is the way and that AppCenter can’t be criticized, but I figured I’d make the note as someone that uses macOS and iOS/iPadOS regularly for iOS app development.
@MarquisKurt
@MarquisKurt Жыл бұрын
@@rumble1925 I’d agree in the sense that it’s how it functions, but the elementary OS homepage doesn’t bill it as such: “Get free and paid apps on AppCenter, the open, pay-what-you-can app store for indie developers. Each app has been reviewed and curated by elementary to ensure a native, privacy-respecting, and secure experience.” There’s nothing in that description that reads, “this is the same thing as Ubuntu Software or Gnome Software, and it should operate like any GUI package manager.” It’d be one thing if they did list that functionality, but they explicitly haven’t because, again, AppCenter seems to be more like an App Store.

Oh man, those Windows Updates! For People who use a PC less often, they can render a Device borderline useless! My Fianc has a Laptop; she only needs PCs very, very irregulary. But she didn't power it on in over 2 years - simply because when she needed it, Windows would do updates.Meaning you simply can not use that stupid thing AT ALL while they are installing. And for me the same story. On the few occations, where I would need another PC to eg test something - her device was allways out of the question - I'm not in the mood to wait half an hour or more for this thing to boot up. As this Laptop was basically completely unused at this point, I just riped off Windows and installed Linux. Guess what? She has started to use it occationally again - because it just works. And it just boots up, when you need it. (Also, even if Windows doesn't do an Update... Damn is that thing slow! Kubuntu is installed and even with the KDE DE this is around a thousand times more snappy and responsive. Boot times are WAY faster as well.)

It needs to be said that eOS has been spearheading UX in the Linux space for some years now. And while they're still showing how less can be more, they've indeed started falling behind in some areas. Flatpaks is a good example. They have spent a significant amount of resources trying to promote and implement flatpaks as a primary packaging format (which has gained quite a bit of traction) but then puts hurdles in front of users to access flathub. I also miss quarter-tiling quite a bit from Pantheon.

Unfortunately I've wasted another couple of hours desperately trying to get it to do stuff other distros just do out of the box. Installed the Driver from the Terminal but I shouldn't have had to do that. Downloaded my favourite Vivaldi Browser as a deb as usual but no means to install it without resorting to the Terminal at which point I gave up. As for Web? I left Windows XP for Ubuntu back before Windows 7 came out. I live booted the original .1 release of elementary OS but never installed it. I did install the .2 release of elementary OS and it’s been my one and only OS since then. I’ve tried other OS’s over the years on spare drives and currently have Pop OS installed on a secondary drive right now , and while Pop is a great OS, elementary OS is still my home. I’ve already installed elementary OS 7 in Boxes on my current desktop and just ordered a new 2tb SABRENT Rocket NVMe to install the new version on. I agree that Flatpak should be enabled by default, but from my perspective, it’s small potatoes. I’m the guy in my world who helps friends and family break free from Windows and into the Linux world by installing elementary OS on their laptops for them. None of these people could navigate creating a bootable flash drive or the UEFI boot issues to get any Linux distro running, so having to enable Flathub integration by my install isn’t something I’d loose a bit of sleep over, nor is it a detriment that any of my friends are ever aware of. If I recommend Elementary OS to someone who’s capable of installing it by themselves, it’s a simple reminder to have them head to Flathub for their first sideloaded program install. My wish list for elementary OS is small... Appimage integration and Wayland support. I really appreciate your videos and I’m only disappointed in the fact that too many people will only concentrate on what you don’t like about elementary OS 7, instead of the great praise you gave it in some important areas. In my opinion, it’s still the most intuitive OS to setup for someone without a lot of computer experience, while not getting in the way of experienced users. I’m still going to keep a copy of Pop OS installed and will also install the new Vanilla OS too, but elementary is still home.

I agree on some of the points. For the AppCenter, I still feel overall that eOS' AppCenter is better than the Gnome Software Center. The categories of the front page on AppCenter is a lot easier to understand(Accessories, Communications, Internet, Office, etc.), whereas the one on Gnome's is really confusing, as Switched To Linux mentioned when it first came out. It has categories like "Work" "Play" "Create" and so on. What does that crap even mean??? So if I want to install a web browser for example, do I click on "Work" or "Play"? Their whole category blocks are really stupidly named, and the gradient colors they have are ugly too. To find what you need, you'll have to search it in Software Center, which is not a problem on either one. Otherwise, you're right that the app pages themselves do show more info on Gnome's than on eOS', and no FlatHub integration sucks, but if you know what you're doing, you can enable that easily and it's done. You have a point on the Applications Menu not showing results from the entire system itself, which is a modern feature. I wouldn't necessarily hold being on X11 over Wayland against eOS. Wayland is still pretty new, and not fully mature. I would give it a few years before it can really be used everywhere, but it definitely is the future. I will have to use a different email than Google's, as they don't seem to play nice with any 3rd party email client, so it's hell trying to use Gmail outside of their web client. This is definitely looking like a nice release. They do focus a lot more on polish over new features, which is a nice thing to do anyway, even if that means that features will come more slowly.

As a GNOME user, I think ElementaryOS has a place in the ecosystem. Yeah, maybe they are «reinventing» the wheel, but you can bet they are making sure the wheel is so polished that you can use it as a mirror. This is something not even the big DEs manage to do in the same way, because they prioritize other things. More devs really wouldn’t solve it. Elementary is perfect for a lot of people, and I’d be sad to see it go. Also, they *do* bring advantages to other desktops as well! AFAIK they were one of the key distros in creating the global, cross-desktop dark mode setting. They collaborate closely with GNOME, which is good for both of the desktops. This is open source, after all :)

Imagine instead of having distro A, B, C, etc we had 'Gnome distro', 'KDE distro', 'Pantheon distro', and all of those people from, for example, Gnome distros (Ubuntu, PopOS, Fedora, etc) working INTO ONE project only... I love the aesthetics of elementary. It’s beautifully put together. It just seems like they intentionally place barriers to people using it (for principles). I understand they don’t want some ugly but functional program to mess up their aesthetic ... I get it. But that’s something that happens on every OS. MacOS included. Windows included. Gnome does the same thing ... just not as bad because they still allow extensions, so it’s like “hack it if you want to, but don’t blame us.” Gnome has global search, so I suffer in gnome for that reason. Elementary definitely needs that feature to be viable as a serious distro.

Depends on your PC configuration. If you use Nvidia GPU then go for it. If you use AMD GPU then go for PoP OS which looks virtually the same, cause Elementary OS uses outdated Linux Kernel in which AMD GPU drivers are contained.

I can't f***ing believe that they shipped another release of Elementary where you have to download a flatpak from the WEB BROWSER to enable flathub in the app center. It makes NO SENSE. Let me flip a switch in the app center settings to enable flathub, that is the only user-friendly way to handle it!!

Not having a graphical package installer is not a deal breaker for me. I prefer something like how Arch's AUR is open and easy to search. Plus, especially with how updating or installing Pipewire can be a delicate issue when Pulse isn't ready to give up the ghost, it's good to know which things installed may have caused the issues, rather than doing a multi-meta install dump and have to dig through the mess to find out what's gone wrong. For maybe easy installs, a graphical pacage installer works fine, but I trust the terminal with more complex installations.

eOS 5 and 6 were my go to for my laptop because of gestures, but then Gnome 40 and KDE added them and were much more complete out of the box. These days elementary seems like they're just playing catch-up instead of innovating, so I'll stick with KDE Neon on my laptop and openSUSE/Ubuntu/Windows 10 on my desktop (yes I triple boot, don't @ me)

I don't know if that's just me, but file searching in files became a pain since Odin. It may sund like a little problem, but file searching is something that I'm used to do a lot, and is the main thing that kept me away from elementary. When you type something inside an folder instead of selecting the folder that you're searching, like kde plasma, if searches for the folder, like Gnome, but it is painfully slow. And if you try to scroll to find the folder while it is searching, it won't work, you have to click out of the search to scroll through the folder, which cancels the search.

Long time elementary user here and I was pretty much done with them after Jolnir, which was a basketcase that ended up in a kernel panic. I wanted to try Fedora Silverblue but I looked at the known issues and right at the top of the list are hardware acceleration problems for AMD GPUs. Ehh no. Wanted to load Elementary Hera which always worked well for me but I can't find it. Ended up trying Elementary 7 Horus and I'm so glad I did! It's working smoothly and problem-free for a week now. Overall, Hera is better than Horus because Music worked on Hera. It still doesn't work on Horus.

"Sideloading" How you change the way people perceive things? You force the change oway people use the words to discribe things. We used to "install" a program, by effectively installing it or coping the executable for use. Now they are pushing the idea that "install" a software is only when you use a software "curated", "allowed" and from the "oficial" app center for the distribuition. If you to it using other means it is "sideloading" a non oficial (read: "incorrect", "reprehensible") way to "implant" "alien" software in the system.

Some say distros like KDE neon (and apparently elementary OS) combine the worst of two worlds: 1) A core that is outdated after a year and therefore does not support new hardware as good as eg. a fresh release of Ubuntu does and 2) you have a rolling DE which brings you all the latest bugs right to your doorstep with every update. As a KDE neon user I can tell you that this sometimes really gets on my nerves. Since it's my private media laptop it's not a problem, but I would never use this on a productive machine that HAS to work.

I think they really are onto something. I used it for a time, but still favour Mint and regular old Ubuntu. If they choose to maintain their niche app center they should at least include twenty or so apps OOTB that are considered staple for a normal OS-experience. That's pretty much my main gripe, and made me reconsider my trust in their line of development, and that was before the conflict. But I'm still happy that they continue, because I think they actually make many neat solutions.
