Derailing is an intended feature. In early versions, that actually happened, but then they increased the derail speed and decreased the minecart speed cap, so it doesn't happen under normal circumstances anymore

The fact that when the minecart essentially threw logic to the wind and hit the speed of light, it wasn't aimed at any buildings, and only stopped after literally travelling back a few seconds into the past and slammed into one of the buildings it had, only moments ago, passed at a normal speed... 100% ended me and reduced my brain to a liquid. I believe Minecraft minecarts conserve speed on tracks, but when you hit a gap followed by a drop, the cart loses its built-up momentum due to the transition from being on the track to falling and then landing. To keep your speed up for future, try to minimize any gaps and drops right before your target. Keep it flush to maintain momentum upon impact. Hope this helps!
