Eleanor tries to soothe Bob Kuhn, whose stomach goes into knots when he tries to contemplate God’s eternity. Good for her. Judging from his expression, she did as well as to be expected.

This is an awesome interview. I had the great privilege of hearing her as a guest lecturer in my Philosophy of God class as an undergraduate at Saint Louis University. These are excellent videos. You should add a little more description about her in your comments to the video since it is likely that many people on KZbin probably do not know much about the philosophy of religion and the stature of this great scholar. Great job ObjectiveBob! I am following this channel very closely.

My limited understanding is that eternity has multiple meanings. For instance, it applies to divine revelation, which has no beginning and no end: “This is the changeless Faith of God, eternal in the past, eternal in the future.” And eternity is also a gift given to all of us. In the words of Baha’u’llah, “O Son of Man! My eternity is my creation, I have created it for thee. Make it the garment of thy temple...” I believe that eternity has been placed deep within our hearts-so deep that it takes many years to begin to uncover it and to experience a small taste of what it might mean.

I’m so confused. So eternity is timeless or one huge now moment, but if I’m in eternity and I move my hand, that’s a passing of time that I can’t go back to because that moment in eternity has passed……????!!!???

This means you can pray for people who have long died that they live a good life and die a good death. That they will be blessed. This is a deep consolation for people living who lost someone tragically or If you want to join with a particular person in history eg St Augustine and ask God to bless their ministry. It’s simple really. But if you want to misunderstand it enough it can easily become a heresy.

Fascinating. But I will have to listen to several more times to understand what she is saying. She’s as lucid as possible but the concepts don’t comport with our mundane sense of time and being.

Thomas Aquinas, probably the greatest mind ever produced.

If he's the greatest mind that was ever produced, then Avicenna, Ibn Rusd and Al Gazali (the 3 Islamic philosophers he basically copy pasted from) must be gods lol. Aquinas is a genius no doubt. But much of his Theological thought wasn't ground breaking in the grand scheme of scholastic theology. It was Ibn Sina (Avicenna) who was truly ground breaking in his analysis of existence and essence (yep, there where Aquinas gets all that from).

@@Drigger95 You're right. People seem ignorant of the influences on the thought of Aquinas: Pseudo-Dionysius, Aristotle via Avicenna, Maimonides, etc.

Eternity is the absence of Time. Timeless and changeless. The change you witness is a result of the changeless. Timeless..... eternal. You can't take it with you because ....it's not real. Even you.

But what if u move your hand in eternity? It’s a passing event and not an eternal now because that event just passed????
