I worked as tour guide in the Okawango delta. One day a young elephant wandered into the compound where the tents were located. The tourists were ecstatic and started taking pictures and approaching the animal. I immediately assembled a handful of guides and we came running hitting the elephant with large wooden poles to drive it out out the compound and chased it away with the jeeps. Tourists were aghast, accusing me of animals cruelty and destroying their nature experience. I had to explain to them that if ever the herd had showed up searching for the little one, they would likely have stampeded the compound and killed whoever got in their way. Elephants are not "gentle giants". They are territorial and often very angry, aggressive animals that charge and sometimes kill at the slightest or even without provocation. I have known several people who got trampled by elephants unfortunately. I still love those majestic beasts, but you need to be extremely careful with them.

+seven2heaven I'll cede that to you for sure in the case of dogs the research I've read suggests that a dog has the emotional and rudimentary cognitive abilities of a 2 year old human. Do it's a very basic low level kind of love without the nuance. I guess my greater issue is with people that assign human emotions when it come to intent or even awareness of animals. Like , I've never hunted BUT I don't have an issue with it. I find people wishing death to a human for hunting animals. To me that's insane and I find it scary people can draw moral equivalence like that. Honestly our proclivity to assign human emotion and attachment to animals like that is almost unique to humans and I think an evolutionary "hiccup" in our comparatively advanced brains. Cheers!
