I feel the exact same way you do. it's amazing for someone to open up to tell you they're depressed and to lay out what's been going on with him for years, I don't know when I've heard anything like that in years from anybody. that's the kind of guy you want to hang around you want to get to know even more because he's real, doesn't have an ego like you said. this was one amazing video and I'm super inspired and I thank you for your comments because you're right on track and I feel the same way this guy is amazing and his drumming is through the roof, I've been drumming for 30 years. so I love the drums just like he has. anyway thank you for your comments we both understand this guy is very fucking cool. 😮

I started drumming in 2004, and to this day I have never jammed with anyone else or played a gig. No one understands this lol. For me, it is about learning the drum part of songs that I either a) love, or b) songs that I feel challenged by. When my weaknesses are exposed while learning the song, I work on the weakness until I feel like playing that song is a fuckin joy, not an exercise. Many days for me also consist of just having a playlist of songs that I love playing and then just playing along….no exercises or trying to learn something new. I have absolutely zero desire to play with anyone else lol. I am nowhere near the skill or talent level of this guy, but I can totally relate to it being all about the drums and nothing to do with playing music.

he he, roger that! Personally I say if you tag yourself as with i.e. DRUMMER then you have chose it, better be able to back it.! ! ! As with anything that you do that YOU or I put name on from brushing my teeth to driving a tractor I engage with the target GAME-LIKE, the very best or even perfection. I was raised up hearing "if your going to do something go in 100% or do not do it" basically. PURPOSE is so huge for a man also, trust me at 60 & widowed, retired I am finding it very very difficult to go all in on anything [failing physically & cognitive[?] & $$] kind of getting sluggish......[or weak in my purpose maybe?] I could run on but YES brother it happens, and you will find it if you keep looking, moving forward....hell even sideways helps for me 60 lmao! The other attribute maybe "No FeaR" of others or anything. oh also PICTURE it !!! → We do not get what we WANT really, but what we PICTURE. But yes that requires a clear target......[or] purpose !!! Spain is still usually a shit hole for talent; luck of opportunities for really talented people that end up in mediocrity, resentful, and voting for the worst politicians ever that cater to that resentfulness. This begins in schools and continues in unis and in the work place. The main reason is that Spaniards are insecure (wrong education) thus are afraid of talent (in various ways) and tend to mutilate it (in various ways).

Except its definitely not true. We could all practice sprinting perfectly everyday but we'll never be Usain Bolt. All of the greatest musicians all worked like crazy but for every Paul Gilbert or Steve Vai there are 100k other people who practiced just as much as them but aren't nearly as good. At the end of the day 99.999% of people could never reach the very top level of any skill without being born with an exceptional natural ability. It doesn't mean we shouldn't all strive to be our best though. This guy definitely worked his ass off but he was also born with a natural predisposition to be a amazing drummer.

@@ButterBallTheOpossum Fully agree. I like to use Usain Bolt too when explaining this topic. In my opinion there are 3 things that defines how a person develops: Genetics, Parenthood and Social Influence outside of home. For example, a simple question for Parenthood influence is "Who bought him the percussion when he was 12 and additionally gave him the possibility to play somewhere without beeing killed by his parents or neighbours?" Talent+work is unbeatable by: No talent+no work, talent+no work, no talent+work.

Some of the one handed techniques you use have shown me that there are work-arounds that I hadn't even thought of. Thank you for helping me become a better drummer, again. ❤✌️

One of the things you didn't touch on and maybe because it never crossed your mind is you had plenty of chances to give up along the way and it probably would've been easier to do so, but you chose not to. The only advice I could possibly give ya is you have to have absolute patience, cuz that’s the main thing I’ve realized since I’ve learned how to play guitar from years ago as a kid. An I’m happy that I can sit around a campfire drinkin brews with friends an play an sing all kinds of songs an that keeps me happy an sane. An sometimes I’ll get grumpy an then realize I haven’t played in a while an then when I do an I feel normal again an content. lol. Good luck! PEACE!

Man I know exactly how you feel, I’ve been playing music as long as I can remember, since I was just 5 years old I’ve been playing piano and guitar. Later on I picked up drums after joining percussion in school when I was about 13, I was absolutely obsessed with drums at first and it became my passion to get better and better. The main difference to your story is my whole life since I was just a kid I thought the one thing I wanted to do was play music because that was what I loved. Fast forward a little while and I ended up at a college of music for jazz studies in drum set, for so long I had just practiced to get better and better, but I reached a point in college when I realized I didn’t care to get any better, I could play just about anything I wanted to. But that’s also when I realized, I didn’t get anything out of playing music anymore. When I look back I remember a time when playing was so fun and it just made me happy, but I can’t pinpoint the moment I stopped loving it, I just got caught up in the endless hours of practice trying to get better and I lost all of the gratification of playing. I hated playing, started hating myself too because all I knew was music and that was a direct reflection of myself. I stopped going to classes, barely made it to my lessons, and quit practicing. Didn’t take long for me to flunk out. Now I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do with myself. Maybe I could try my hand at making videos of myself like he did to at least document that I can even play but I haven’t practiced in months and I don’t know that I’ll get anything out of it. I’m thinking about going to school for a trade or something like that at this point, but it definitely feels like I’ve wasted my entire life on something I may never enjoy again. Unfortunately there’s not much of a happy ending to my story so far, but I’m at least much happier than I was when I was in college. Thank you for reading this if you have I know there are many others who probably feel the same

I think the secret of life is to find happiness. If music no longer makes you happy, maybe you will find something that does. I think the trades can be satisfying because you help create, repair or maintain things. For me, those actions are satisfying.

WOW, Mr. Garrido. This is one of my all-time favorite videos. Not only are you most likely the greatest drummer in the world, you are equally as special of a human being. I had to sell my drum kit, golf clubs, and bowling ball when my health went bad. Fortunately, there are special people in the world that I live vicariously through now. As a 53 year old man who b also suffers from depression, I can tell you that I absolutely wish I could hang out with you for one day. What a total inspiration and kind person you are. God bless you, Brother.

Thank brother🙏 This is exactly what I needed to hear right now. I'm a guitarist/bassist and over the years I have dedicated myself 100% to it learning literally 100's of songs and starting several bands only to have everything fail no matter how hard I try. Its hard to find people just as dedicated😒 Doing all this while working full time jobs and hating my life. Now I'm 43 and have a family and lately because of the pressures of life. I've reached a point of feeling as depressed as I was when I was when I was 11 years old and lost my father way before I'd started my journey as a musician at the age of 16. It is the only reason I'm alive today, because if it weren't for finding my passion, I would've ended it all a long time ago😔 But your words and your passion for what you do have inspired me not to give up🙂 I love your videos❤ You're amazingly talented and funny. Please keep doing what you love because people love you for it🤘

Dude, it´s incredible what you´ve been through and your so honest, sharing everything that didn´t work and how you moved on. I´m also a person who had it pretty rough, especially in school. Because of my autism I´m quite limited on a lot of different stuff. I don´t have a job (yet and maybe will never have), but music is my biggest interest ever. I love to listen to so much different music, I play drums a little, but prefer playing on my keyboard, cuz it´s cooler for me I guess. I don´t do it that often though but I still love doing it. But what I love even more is singing. I just feel free when I´m singing and always enjoyed it and I also learned a thing or two. I need to mention that I love Rock and Metal music but listen to a variety of different music genres. I love doing it as a hobby and maybe it would someday save my butt from financial crises, who knows. Your speech was very inspirational and I think I learned more about what is actually important in life, specifically when you have something you love to do, to just keep on going with what we have and to appreciate it before it´s gone. Your personality is great and you care so much about what´s really important in life. Nowadays it´s not easy to stay on the right track but you can still try your best and live a good life while you still can. It never was easy for me and I guess it never will. Stay safe too!

Jorge, I’m glad you exist and here’s my small bump to your algorithms! I’ll copy to a bunch of your videos! My reasons? 1. I’m not a drummer and haven’t listened to much music for years (I’m into books right now). I’ve never enjoyed watching drummers do their thing outside of a song. Despite that, you have grabbed my attention and I’ve dipped into music styles I don’t even enjoy and discovered artists that are great! Your mesmerizing drumming and the pure entertainment raised them to something worth watching again and again! Wow! I’ve listened to more music in the past couple months than in the last decade! Thank you! 2. You are funny, authentic, intelligent, incredibly disciplined and skilled. (You are also some real eye candy, but that wouldn’t matter if it wasn’t for your inner qualities!) What impresses me is that you want to pass on your life lessons, knowledge and skills to others and inspire them on their own journey. That’s big! Huge!!! We need more people in the world like that! 3. As a side note, in your Million Views video you mentioned that something in your character drives you to do correctly whatever you’re doing. That can be a blessing or a curse, but when I listened to your Mike Portnoy video and your story about your girl related reasons for learning his song, I just started laughing. Your drive to do things ‘correctly’ could be a blessing for your partners! 4. Thank you for enriching my life and I wish you fulfillment, success and happiness as you ‘lay pipe’ in your own life’s journey! Life is short, go for it! Nancy from the States!
