I've built about a dozen hunting blinds and sold them over the years. But finally building one for myself. And even after all the blinds I have built, I got new ideas from this video. Thanks alot. I will share my build when I get it finished.

Very impressive build. My uncle and I built one back in 2018 and boy did it seem to bother the deer. This season, 2022, is the first season I can honestly say the deer no longer notice it. My advice for anyone looking to do a build is, be patient with the deer population as it appears it will take a generation or 2 until the deer settle in around it.

I've had mixed results with them myself. With some, they aren't bothered by them right away. With others, same outcome as yours.

Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box on the South side of your hunting blind. They will reduce the rodents and ticks in your forest area.

@@UncleBucks a lot of these ticks have a complex two year life cycle involving more than one host. The second nymph stage involves rodents and birds. Forest mice are our most infected rodent, LYME disease and other bad stuff. There just are not enough old big trees with hollow cavities suitable for nesting. Nice build, good video, your high school carpentry shop teacher would be proud.

After what I went through today freezing my ass off I think this hide a way is just perfect! Let the vegetation and scrub grow around it leaving yourself a trail to entrance and I think you'll be very pleased with what you have done. Especially with your nice feed lot.

I still prefer hunting from a ladder stand buy sure do enjoy it on those really cold days, which is most of our gun season. After 30+ years of toughing out the cold, I have no regrets!

Very nice job and design. Im 67 and started putting up enclosed elevated box blinds on my Wi farm. At my age comfort means a lot to this worn out body. Im not a believer in peeing close to my hunting spots as some people do. Been a bow hunter since age 12.

I like your use of PVC pipe for window closure locks! Being rounded they are less likely to "hang up" on the window edges. I may have to change out the ones on my "commercial" blind.

Thanks for the great ideas, going to build a 6X8 blind for another hunting property in the mid-west where the weather can really get nasty, as in the recent tornados that destroyed lots of Kentucky. Prayers for the families that lost loved ones.

Great build. In Texas wasps are a huge issue because it doesnt freeze enough to kill them till late in the season. Your landing and awning over the door are going to be wasp nest magnets. We use Downy dryer sheets to keep the wasps away from our blinds. I read it somewhere that it irritates them and tried it. It works. We staple some in the corners where they like to build nests and hang a few wasp traps in near by trees in August to clear them out. I have had blinds literally covered on the inside with red wasps. Beautiful work btw.

Thank you. We do have a little trouble with wasps too but you are right, only for the early part of season here in WI. I've seen posts where others put mock nests up such as a paper bag to deter new ones from being made. Not sure if it really works. I've not tried it.

I had wasp issues too, Michigan here. I bought some of those fake wasp nests on Amazon and it works like a charm. Just make sure they are up before wasps make a nest, early spring here. Not sure if that'll work for you in a warmer climate.

Comfort wasn't a priority for me for my first 30 years of deer hunting, but that's changing for me also. Doesn't take much to lose interest anymore with uncontrollable shivering and a sore back!

Thank you. After a few seasons of use, that's often the only window I open while bowhunting. I can't hear much outside, which isn't so great, but my movement is well concealed due to outside reflection on the other windows. Since it's much colder while gun hunting, I keep them all closed and only open the bow window when it's time to use the gun, if the deer is in that direction, which is almost always the case. The vertical window is definitely my favorite one!

@@UncleBucks Fortunately I live in a semi tropical climate in central MS so we really get very little cold weather. So for me, I just open the windows, sit behind a wall panel so the deer can't spot me easily, wear camo, and stay still. In an elevated stand, and if the woods are dry, I can hear any deer walking from at least 30 or 40 yards away with the windows open. I don't own any small heaters but just wear insulated bib overalls and a good hunting jacket. Deer are extremely curious creatures. If I sit extremely still, I can actually sit on an open platform or just a bucket leaned against a tree. Deer have walked to within a few yards just to see if I am alive, I suppose. I've had hawks and owls land within a few feet of my position. Once I had a squirrel sit on the edge of my deer stand with me just about two feet away. It's all dependent upon learning how to sit still and not move. Your blind is a real castle in the woods. I like it!

@Trehan Creek Outdoors Well said! Most of my archery hunting is from ladder stands and hang on stands. When gun season rolls around, I've usually had enough of being cold. I really struggle with sitting still as well, so it's also nice to be able to move around some after months of not being able to. Wishing you hunting success!

Nicely done. I’d add railing on the top entry ledge. Even if it’s only rope. If you’ve been in it all morning with freezing rain blowing down, it could be very slick when you go to exit the blind. Very nice.

After using that ladder in the winter, I decided to keep it that way. I think it's safer than one with 2x4 steps, and also more quiet. Snow and ice doesn't accumulate on the angle iron steps like it does on 2x4 steps.

I built a 6x8 ft two man stand 12ft tall. Similar to yours, 2 yrs ago. I like some if the things you did to your stand. But we don't have certain issues in our georgia area. Mine overlooks a half acre plot with corn feeder. Tks for your informative video.

Thanks James! Being too warm almost never happens here in WI. We're thinking of ways to heat our blinds while you're thinking of ways to cool them! Our archery season starts mid September though, so the warm weather here is usually done. I did get a taste of some warm weather hunting in Missouri this fall. I was in a Banks blind. Tried to tough it out with the windows closed, but a guy can only take off so many clothes while hunting without it becoming weird, lol.

Awesome set up! I’m also a northern WI deer hunter. You should add a pair of blind slippers and change from boots to those. In my blind I have a small fan near the heater blowing hot air towards the ground to help keep my feet warm.

Brilliant repurposing of materials. I recommend putting some blocks under it to get it off the ground enough to slow rot. Might also treat the exposed wood and metal. You will enjoy this thing for many years.

The 4x4s are pressure treated for direct contact with the dirt, they are buried in the ground for stability.

Cush?… yes. Overkill?… yes. Bravo?… definitely! The only thing missing is an espresso machine and a turret system that allows you to rotate the entire box… 😂😂 We just use $79 tiny pop up blinds… not cush… but 100% portable… can choose different positions depending on wind conditions. For a permanent position, your shelter is pretty sweet… well done sir 😊👍🏼

Love the pvc window locks think I'm going to switch mine over to that. I also did the funnel and hose and I just carry a small bottle of water to pour down it after using. Once I hit 45 I was done sitting in cold tree stands.

Not overbuilt at all. My wife and I are about to turn 60 and we both try our best to make things very comfortable for us and also our young grandchildren. We want them to at least be comfortable coming to observe the wildlife and hopefully take out a few of those pesky feral hogs that we have no shortage of. Our non hunting daughter in law has even taken to going for that! We figure the more comfortable it is the longer you'll stay. By making it safer to enter and exit my older siblings are good with going up and down the ladders or stairs. I hate rebuilding every few years so build it strong and put some "OOPS" paint from Lowes or Home depot paint department on it every 4 or 5 years. Great job!

Did you put a loop in your hose for your indoor urinal? It will act as a trap so odors don't come up into your stand. You did a nice job and saved a lot by using those materials.

Nice box blind! My son and I built one very similar this year. Ours is right on the edge of the woods and I have windows on all 4 sides so I can hunt the woods or the field. Because of that, our entry is different than yours ... we get in and out through a trap door in the floor. Another difference is our windows open down. But, one big similarity is that the vast majority of the building materials were free/repurposed. The only way to go. I've already shot one out of it, so hoping for a really good season. I like to set up. A couple things that I would change it would be completely insulated And would added 2 * 8 or a 2 by 10 for a shooting rest and cover them with carpet . And I do like the idea of the vents and Buddy heaters do get a little fumi. No did not over do it

Nice stand. I'm going to post a video of my and I'm building a new one this year. I've been one last year and of course wood was more expensive than, but I used some wood that a person took off a old barn and things like that. I stand looks pretty similar to yours in so many ways.. maybe it's because I used the elevator brackets as well.

One thing you should add is a little 100W solar panel to charge your boat battery! Then you can add some little LED strip lights low, and a couple 12v outlets to plug in a phone charger or things like that

I'm thinking of adding a solar charger to it soon. Is 100W necessary for charging/maintaining my boat battery? I see some as low as 1.5W on Amazon. Those are $25 vs $150 for 100W...

@@UncleBucks It really depends on what your draw is, how often you're draining the battery, and how much sun you'll actually get. Anything less than a 20W will really only maintain a battery and won't do much to change it. There's some great calculators online to help determine how much you need.

I agree. It's too big for one person to sit in and not have blind spots. 6x6 is perfect for one person with adequate room to shoot a vertical bow. I have a 6' octagon design and found It's just the right size. There's a few videos on my channel of it, fyi.

Your comment about urine smell reminded me of our families pee tree tradition, ie we always had a tree near camp that was used by the fellas (one gal tried) the smell of the salt in ones urine tends to draw deer in from my experience.

They did a study (cant remember the college) that they peed in buck scrapes and poured doe urine in another, they set up trail cams and they had the Same amount of buck attention to the doe pee as the human pee.

All good! I usually let it go off the back deck when it's not super cold. Inside, I take good aim and give it a flush with a splash of water afterwards.

I’ve pee’d many times off the landing of a deer blind, and still saw & shot plenty of deer. I don’t think it bothers them either. Had an emergency last year, where I had to climb out and do #2 near my blind. Climbed back in and shot a doe 30 minutes later.

Do you have issues with your windows frosting up when you run the heater with them being single pane? Or does the fan prevent that perfectly?

I have issues with single pane and insulated glass windows fogging and frosting up. The fan definitely helps to clear them up faster. The single pane is actually easier to defrost than the insulated windows. Fog takes about the same amount of time to disappear with either type of window, at least in my experience.

Love it! I am thinking I am going to start using green popple as cross members, it shrinks ten percent in diameter, but almost nothing at all in length. Gonna counter sink and pray. Figure the worst that happens is that I have to tighten it again the following year. I too hate spending $300 on cross members, and lumber is more expensive now than ever.

Now thats my kind of shooting shack. Mine is only 4’x8’ and not elevated but where it sits it doesnt need to be. The field it overlooks is 500 yds long but most of the deer traffic is within 300. I need to add plexiglass to my window to keep out the cold

I like my Blinds High w/ Stair Ways, Good Windows that won’t fog up like Plexiglass does. A good Heater. A Cooler so you can Hunt from Early Morning until Dusk. The Last thing is either a Small Toilet so I can go #1 and #2 lolll

I built the same thing this year for bow hunting. Windows designed from 6" above floor and are 4 feet tall x 16" wide. They swing open quietly. The ceiling is 80" so you can stand and draw normally. Was a pain for this 70+ years old goat. The floor is 6x6 feet. Rubber carpet tiles on the floor. Nothing on the walls to collect and hold odors.

That was a good tour of the deer blind but what way do u prefer the way your horizontal windows open up or down in your blind? Where do u get the magnet's to keep the windows open? Thxs

Thanks Ryan. I like the vertical hinged window the best, but hinging upward is better than downward as it allows room for shelving underneath and also room to build a shooting ledge. I got the rare earth magnets on eBay.

I am with you on not thinking the deer care about urine smell. I have had them sniff where I had gone, then just wonder on grazing as they went.

Urine will turn into ammonia in 15 min and all smell is gone supposably. 👍

deer can smell the pheromones in urine but hearing is probaly their best sense IMO from what I was taught years ago in the hunter safety course lol but its moreso about colors they have excellent eye sight and can see any color in black, white and UV spectrums

@proudpennsylvanian330 I don't recall the exact ones I used, but stronger is better IMO. You can always add a layer of felt or moleskin to weaken the bond or dampen the clap together.

Do hunt this stand in all wind directions. Curious with the vents about your scent.

When I archery hunt out of it, I'm careful with wind direction, because I usually have windows open. When I gun hunt, it's much colder, so I usually keep the windows closed. The deer don't need to be so close, so I am not as careful with wind direction, but I'm pretty convinced they can't smell me with closed windows anyway - even though I have vents. I do treat my hunting clothes with ozone, so that may help.

What do you think the spread is at the bottom of the 4 x 4s legs on the six foot end? The blind starts at 6ft wide at the top but because the legs angle out as they go down to the ground how far are they apart once they are at ground level just on the 6ft side?

I'd guess about 8 feet but the next time I am out there I'll measure the spread at the grounda and comment again...

The 4x4 legs are 8 feet long. They are about 8-1/2' apart on the ground below the 6' side of the box and 10' apart below the 8' side of the box
