I made something very similar recently and took some advice from our vet. He said that the highest point of the feeder should be no higher than the lowest point of the dogs stomach. This is because the food needs be able to go 'uphill'. Great project and looks like fun to build.

Perfect you guys. My boxer recently injured his front leg running up and down the stairs. My wife and I were just talking about making a stand for his food and water just last night. I'm on it ! The magnets were not in the plan but; sounds logical. I cork on bottom is good too. Thank you !

I don't know if I know anyone that needs this but with my dad dieing from cancer almost a year ago now and my sister losing her dog to cancer this past week it could be a nice project to try out. And if I can't find a friend that needs it I can donate it to the humane society where we got our dog.

Great project. So the top was stained "brown" and "browner"? :) Great cause. My youngest son is fighting cancer and when his treatments started there was discussion about his treatments and how far they've come over the years. I'm totally doing this ! My 14 year old cousin just survived a really bad bone cancer he was given virtually no chance of surviving (survival percentage was in the teens). I don't know if building a dog feeder will increase that percentage, but with more dollars going into more research, who knows, maybe it will 🙂

I hesitate to post because I want this to be successful, but just some caution that you might want to check with your vet before using elevated dog bowls. They can lead to issues such as bloat and eating too fast. It is generally recommended to only use them if needed for other issues such as a bad back. I wanted to make some for my dog in the past but my vet advised against it.

Suggestion: have two sets of bowls - the extra ones can be dropped in while the other set is in the dishwasher. Also, the bowls aren't standard between companies so if a bowl is lost you don't have to hunt for a new one that fits or modify the stand to use a new size.

so based on quick research. It's not necessarily better, and if there aren't specific medical indications to do so, can increase the risk of adverse GI events in large breed pets in particular based on a 2000 study that was done by the professional vet association. It's best to talk about whether this is appropriate for your pet w/ your vet.

Thanks for what you do! I download and printed the PDF plans from my iMac. The drawings and the TWW logo have a black backdrop which makes it hard to read for my old eyes. Is it the PDF or my iMac?

I called Apple and we did several things including installing printer drivers from HP. Still no luck. All the drawings and logo have a black background. Does anyone else have this problem?

I called Apple a second time, actually for something else. I explained the problem with the PDF. The Apple guy had me export the PDF to PNG file. It printed just fine. It also prints fine on my Wife's Windows PC at work. Other PDF print fine from my iMac. But my iMac or printer just does not like this one. Off to the shop!!

GRIPE - These things make your dog eat and drink in an unnatural and straining position. The person that dreamed this up was too lazy to bend over. The natural position for a dog to eat is to lay down and eat, drinking is to bend their neck down to the water or to lay by the water.

So I've been seeing these crop up around a lot as far as a feeding option and that got me to wondering... are these better for the animals? In the "natural" environment they would always eat off the ground, so evolutionarily speaking they probably are better suited for that. So looked on the internet and found... buh buh bh bummm. Controversy around this. It seems claims were made regarding this feeding method, that while intuitive, the one study that was done on this actually contradicts those claims and indicates there is an increased risk to large breed dogs to have GI complications from elevated feeders. The problem is that this is no study vs only one study. But w/ that data one would lean toward the no elevated feeding. Now there are reasonable exceptions to this such as arthritis in the neck and back. So ultimately if you decide you may want to try this with your animal please check with your veterinarian first. That being said the project is gorgeous and done well as always and I just love it and is something I'll keep in mind if I have an animal that's advised to do so by my vet. Side note: I am getting close enough to being done w/ building my house that I'm hoping to join in on the next WFC project.
