The scene where shimizu tossed the bag to yachi really resonates with me. I think it also symbolises how shimizu is passing on the role of manager to yachi after inevitably having to leave the club when she graduates. it’s such a symbolic scene and i just felt like i needed to point that out

Volleyball knowledge, taking care of all these idiot boys, all the paperwork, all the water/towels, laundry, money, keeping track of everyone's stats, researching other teams, etc. Watching them fall apart, watching them come back together and through it all she's been there every single day. With Yachi her legacy and hard work will continue to build instead of end.

Just to clarify coach. It's left ambiguous in the manga and anime if Shimizu quit track because of an injury or because she simply didn't feel like she was at a high enough level to compete in high school since she mentioned her middle school track team was pretty big and stacked. But it's heavily implied that it was injury related.

So coach, you gotta remember this was a manga before it was an anime. Kageyama's 'matrix' scene was taken wholesale from the manga, and while it was adapted incredibly well, I totally agree that even envisioning that scene if impressive in its own right. Haruichi Furidate is a really rare example of a mangaka who refuses to be consigned to one way of drawing his characters, and is constantly experimenting with different techniques to portray different concepts. A lot of what makes the anime so special and makes it require so much from its animators is just how creative Furidate-Sensei is with his original art.

On thing that I've always liked about this episode is how Kageyama's grid earlier in the episode is all wavy to signify his messy depth perception but when he finally calibrates and syncs up with Hinata at the end, the grid is now perfectly square, showing that he has his spatial awareness back.

One thing I've noticed about the 'Matrix' scene is that it looks like the shadows are cast as if the ball is the only light source. (Not sure if that counts as chiaroscuro or not, or even tenebrism). So when the ball passes in front of the Tsubakihara spiker the shadows are to the right, or when the ball is coming towards Kageyama at the end his whole face is blazing white.

Love how Takeda's more invested and knowledgable in the actual /volleyball/ part now, screaming "nice serve" and stuff :") This episode had some really nice animations, but the culmination scene where Shimizu jumps over that railing looks absolutely /stunning/ in the manga (comic). Not sure about how that would work, but I'd definitely love to see your reactions to the manga as well - there's a lot of extra details all adding to the characters, and the way the author goes out of their way to not make the game seem repetitive on paper, always playing around with the angles, perspective & composition, is fascinating. But if recording your reactions would be too much work, I still hope that eventually you'll find some time and check out the manga just for yourself! Chances are you'd enjoy it. As a track and volleyball athlete, i'm happy u acknowledge our sport. In relation to your question about foot strikes i think it is fine. This is because she said she was confident in her stamina meaning its likely she was a 400m hurdler and not a 100m hurdler. The fact that it is a longer event and that she stopped running after middle school so her form probably didn't evolve too much, so it is not unrealistic for her to run like that and not with proper form. They do also save the big budget shots for cooler ones such as the final scene of this episode.

I used to be a track and field athlete before. Got injuries and sprains a lot in practices and competitions. I got injured to the point that my leg never really healed properly and now I can't run fast for longer periods of time that made me quit. My last race was a 400m hurdle sprint and I barely managed to jump half of them. It was so frustrating that I couldn't even do my last race as how I wanted it to. Never really related to Shimizu before until this episode came out. It was such a beautiful side story, and the last image of her jumping over a hurdle and passing the 'baton' to Yachi was so touching. So this episode will always have a special place in my heart.

You are correct you always want to run on your toes to reduce the ground time impact from each step making your strides faster and you get more power from your toes than your heels. Running on your heels increases the time you are on the ground. Hope this helps you volleyball athletes. Much love been watching since episode 1

The focus on Shimizu in this episode makes me cry. The fear and failure that pushed her towards leaving a passion behind, the way volleyball, a place that she felt like an outsider, on the sidelines, becomes so much more and the realisation of how much she is a part of the team. The rediscovering of the passion of competition that comes with that. and then the symbolism of her throwing the bag to Yachi, passing on the baton. Its such an emotional moment, having to accept leaving behind something that you loved, like she did with track, but this time she knows she has someone to pass it on too and she has faith in Yachi to carry it on for her. yeah impossible not to cry for me haha

An added benefit to finding the reset point is it forces Yamaguchi to take time his time before serving. The first time Yamaguchi went on the court as a pinch server, he was so nervous he served right after the whistle blew. During tournaments, I like to use up as much as the allowed time before serving. Those 8 seconds are my own ‘personal time-out’ for a short rest and focus, especially after a side-out. I’ve been fortunate a few times to go on a service run too, so when I feel comfortable enough - I’ll do a serve right as the whistle blows which catches the other team off guard :D

It's not so evident in anime, but I think we need to appreciate how Ukai-kun tries to prepare his players for unexpected challenges during a big-time tournament. He makes sure that they warm up properly instead of hanging around the venue, are prepared to play on an unknown surface, and pass the ball high to get accustomed to the ceiling. The manga shows that he researched a lot by talking to his fellow coach friends about their experience in the national tournament. Although he's not experienced, he does a good job.

Yeah I did 4 years highschool and track and you are completely right about the running animation. Shimizu should’ve been on the balls of her feet and her legs should’ve been extending too. But I do have to say animation of her technique as she jumps over the hurdles and the metal pole is perfectly done, Shimizu’s form was perfect. Also hurdles is a really stressful event because if you mess up your steps approaching the hurdle you can either hit the hurdle and get hurt or you won’t get over the hurdle effectively and it really slows you down. A lot of the hurdlers on my team were really anxious going to a meet about these events so maybe the fact that she was always getting hurt and the anxiety might be why Shimizu quit track and field.

This episode is one of the great examples of Furudate-sensei's characterization. Shimizu could have ended up as a one-note character, but Furudate gives her depth and pathos that make this mission (to get Hinata's shoes back) more than just an errand. It's a way for Shimizu to cope with her past while using her past to inform her present. I'm always in awe of how each character is developed and shaped in the narrative. The matrix-like scene with Kageyama pinpointing his set to Hinata is one of the reasons that after the first half of season 4, I decided to read the manga. It left that much of an impression on me. Being a team manager was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I pushed myself harder during that time than I ever did before, and I learned so much about volleyball and about my own skills and abilities (such as leading by example but in the background). Taking down stats helped me be a better, wiser note-taker and observer, which now serves me when I'm listening to lectures or annotating texts. It helped with problem-solving and with interpersonal communication (something I really struggled with as a very lonely introvert).

The way spatial awareness was shown here was so sick! Like not just volleyball, but that scene just feels so relatable when doing anything physical, where that visualization just feels so right!

I think Shimizu got the leg scars from running hurdles. In this flashback you see the hurdle stand getting knocked over. That's when the injury happens. Then she became a manager of Karasuno's Volleyball team.

The scene of Shimizu sprinting and hurdling to get Hinata's shoes back and getting her history as an athlete this and the previous episode always makes me tear up and get emotional. I was involved with a lot of sports when I was younger, and ended up not continuing when I got into high school opting to spend my time with choir. There were a lot of times I missed it, but having the choir as my 'team' really helped even if I wasnt physically on a court or field. I always appreciated her as the manager, but learning this about her and rewatching the series, really helped me appreciate her even more as their manager. Getting your insight as well, especially when you've mentioned in the past encouraging players who maybe can't keep up in practice or make the full team to be a manager to keep them involved, really makes me appreciate that there are amazing coaches like you out there.

So true about packing thoroughly, you’re already nervous enough as it is for a tournament, the worst thing that could happen is to forget something vital and irreplaceable. To me that would be my shoes and my contact lenses!!! I always keep spares in the car
