THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR HAIKYUU SEASON 4 (Haikyuu character analysis)
Although he wasn’t my favorite character at first, Tanaka’s moment in season 4 became my favorite scene in all of Haikyuu. The scene touched me in a way that…well, healed me. Haikyuu has always been a show that inspired me, with character moments such as Hinata and Kageyama's drives to stay on the court, Tsukishima's epic block, and so many more, but this moment from Tanaka took it to a whole new level for me.

He was definitely the guy we took for granted. If it weren't for his seemingly everlasting spirit that was constantly boosting his teammate's morale, they wouldn't have made it this far and everyone on the team knows it.

This was the only scene in the show that made me cry, the simplest struggle of having a particularily bad day or failing at something you've been trying to succeed for a while. To then realize that you just have to keep trying, as long as you keep going, you can do it.

It's the simple lessons in life that often hit the hardest. That's why I resonate so much with Haikyu, it's a complex story made of simple machinery. I appreciate the comment :)

This is one part but dont tell me you didnt cry or had some tears of joy when hinata dig the ball so his team mates can catch up their breath regroup like boy old hinata would have just dig that normally and it showed the other aspect that he learned during the training camp. I was just like sugu tearing up like "my boy have grown up"🥲

Honestly same, this was the only scene I was tearing up to, and there were a LOT of scenes that made me emotional. But this one.....there was something about it..as I struggled with the exact same thing when I was 15 playing basketball. I was in a highschool team as a freshman and everyone was better than me, I felt worthless and I was benched most of the season because I couldn't make a single shot. Every practice, every game was miserable and I felt horrible and useless. I eventually gave up on basketball and started watching Haikyuu and when I got to this moment, I sobbed. Now my passion is towards volleyball, even though I don't have a team yet. But I will try and try and it won't be like my last season of basketball was, even if I am average. Sorry for this tangent, this is just something that's hard to express without using a lot of words lol

@@localheaddealer1382 It's because wing spikers don't expend as much energy relative to the other positions. Middle blockers have to jump in every rally. Liberos tend to do more strenuous movement due to their often larger defense zone on top of constantly analyzing where the ball will go. You can make a case for dedicated setters but their struggle is more on the mental side of the game, which is deceptively taxing. In most rotations, middle blockers tend to be the subbed out players by the libero when they're on the back row because their main job of blocking can't be done there, and quick attacks are less effective when done as a pipe. Dedicated setters are subbed out when the opponent is easily reading their sets, having an off moment (ex. Kageyama gets subbed out for Sugawara because he couldn't calm down), or a certain subbed in player works better with the bench setter (ex. Kageyama gets subbed out for Sugawara when Narita comes in because Sugawara has more experience playing with Narita, and the MB-S synchronicity is a key factor in establishing the threats of quick attacks). The only time you ever really sub out wing spikers is when they get injured, tired, or have terrible sync with the current setter, which rarely ever happens. From experience, this only happens often with a DS like Sawamura who has to constantly play like an MB and L at the same time due to the opponent's overwhelming offensive playstyle.

for me it was when he said he went into the depression state every six months, like he consistantly thought of it and resolved it. meaning his consistancy as a character was due to his consistant internal drive and attitude towards his impending annual depressing reality. it sorta hit me as the depression i hide or everyone else hides that chips away at them and encouraged me to never give into into it my limits physically, mentally or socially. the attitude was something we all could achieve and seemed attainable yet wasnt, it wasnt ignorance but resolve and the result of someone who put that hardwork into self improvement into stopping his deepest fears, the hard work that i needed to keep on doing for myself.

When this moment happened in the manga, I remember thinking that this was on par with the Tsukki block, and to this day it's still one of the top 3 moments in the series for me. I was ecstatic that they decided to up the budget for this episode and give it the love it deserves. As someone that's always seen as the happy and energetic guy, I've always related to Tanaka. It's not always easy being consistently happy and supportive of those around you, especially when your mental state is in the dumps on certain days, and we get a glimpse of that in season 1 when Oikawa was targeting Tanaka. But he's always been that mental pillar for Karasuno, which I really respected. But this moment solidified Tanaka as my favorite character. The show dives deep into the difficulty of being a positive force for those around you and the fortitude it takes to keep going, and it colors the rest of Tanaka's little moments throughout the entire series with insight into his true character. God this show is so good.

@@whenwetalkaboutnature4903 Tanaka scores consistently on the best teams in the show? Went head to head with Mad Dog-chan who was stated to be a strong spiker by Oikawa, scores against Suna who is a nationals Middle Blocker who's attack options mimic Bokutos power and sharpness and he's top 5 in all of Japan..... how does that sound even remotely like someone who's average? Someone who is average is on the bench not playing with the starting geniuses, the ones who put in the same amount of effort and practice as those geniuses and still end up unable to play in games are the ones who are average. Tanakas nose dives only happened before this point because he had no weapon and was still scoring on Inter High/National teams. It's ok to be inspired by something but Tanaka is far from average.

Although if there is something special in him, it is his mental strength for key moments, only the best athletes in history are capable of recovering in certain instances, examples such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Manu Ginobilli, Rafael Nadal, Eddy Merckx. And in 2020 while i was still preparing for the exam, i watched s4. When i saw this scene, i was moved to tears. The scene amazed me by the fact that i had never seen something so relatable. It was something i desperately needed while i saw my peers do better than me on a daily basis which made me feel inadequate, and watching it made me feel motivated and determined to win. So i downloaded the episode, and cut out that the entire scene and kept it on my desktop. Whenever i felt down or unmotivated or had a bad test result, i would watch that clip and it would instantly motivate me to do bettter. Cut to the present, i have successfully cleared the exam and i couldn't be more grateful that i watched this masterpiece of an anime.

09:22, i love how kageyma reacted when tanaka demanded the ball ahahhahahaha i think this is what kageyama strive the most for, passion, the reason he had that fissure in kitagawa daichi was because their teamates simply wasnt that passionate about playing, and trying, and experimenting, having the flame inside them i think kageyama dont give that much of a shit about winning, but he want to feel he and his teamates made THEIR ABSOLUTE best, so the moment tanaka showed to him "GIVE ME THAT FUCKING BALL" he became his 1st option, because no one had more to prove, and wanted to proved it more than tanaka ahahahahha i think kageyama is one of the most under analised character of haikyuu ahhaha

did you even watch the anime? kageyama was all about winning in middle school that's why he didn't care about the suggestions his teammates had. He didn't even think of them as tools he can use which is why he was labeled as "slave of speed". If he was really caring for their passion, he would've known that his middle blocker spikes better if the timing for their quick is a little slower than the average and that kunimi can put more effort in the later half of the game. Don't justify his faults in the past because that's part of the reason why he grew. He even grew to point that he sets an open set for hinata which past kageyama would never ever do.

Almost all of the kitagawa daichi had passion but kageyama was the most passionate back then. If kageyama thought about his teammates back then, they could've been champions. @@rohanardiente7659 Yeah, and the manga too, did you forget the game were kageyama staled the game to keep playing longer, and then his grandpa said to him "if you what you want is play more, win and you will meet all kinds of player" this is the reason, or that line was uninportant? The reason i said the member os kitagawa daichi lacked passion is because in Haikyuu the passion of players ir pretty well objectively ranked in the end with each character kept playing professionaly, each player that played unprofessionaly, and players who quitted althoughter, none of kitagawa daichi were in the first division, they liked volleyball but wasnt thaaaaaat passionate in my opinion, i dont imagine any of the most passionate characters droping a set because they "didnt liked it" Kageyama faults wasnt the he didnt recognize players, was that he didnt know how to communicate, even at the time he recognized Hinata passion and respected him, even he lacking in skill

I don't know why but I was getting emotional right from the start. I have the same sentiment with you, I saw how Tanaka doesn't have a very significant solo moment from the first 3 seasons. I thought he's like a constant character, the one that would help and cheer other characters but seemed to not have his own moment so I didn't think much of his own solo moment since I thought he'll be just that character. but then when his moment came, I have realized that out of everyone, I relate to Tanaka on the personal level. to hear his own thoughts and struggles, I see myself on him now. to not be able move on the same level as others even though you're doing your best, to realize that you're not the person you thought when you're younger, to feel that no matter how hard you work, you won't be able to be as good as your colleagues. it was a tough realization, so we have to have a Tanaka mindset. that even though it was a harsh reality, you should not stop trying, we should not stop seeking change and improvement in our life.

But In the end he was unbreakable, he experienced all that self doubt and loathing of himself during that match that had built up over time and yet didn't let his team mates see, all the while he still carried his team, gave words of encouragement and initially was more like a big brother. If anything Tanaka is the true Guardian of the Karasuno volleyball team, he might be goofy most of the time with Noya but Tanaka is serious about what he loves and cares for.

I think all the student athletes could relate with this moment. You tell yourself in the back of your mind that you can make it pro or make a career out of whatever sport it is that you play. Then, as you grow, meet new people, play more games, you slowly realize how far away your dreams are. People who are naturally gifted, played for longer, trained more etc. It puts you into a state of depression where you feel as like giving up on your dreams and you have to accept the reality of things. Hey man, thank you so much for the self-promo on Reddit, I don’t think I would’ve seen this video otherwise! Weirdly enough, Tanaka’s always been my favorite character in Haikyuu, but this episode still hit me in a way I didn’t expect. I’d fallen into the same line of thinking of Tanaka as the dependable one, the unbreakable pillar, rowdy and loud and so caring towards his friends and teammates. This episode shined an even brighter light on those aspects of his character that I already loved so much, while highlighting these doubts and making him feel so *real* and human in a way that Haikyuu just excels at. I’ve never been on a sports team, but I’ve been on forensics/competitive performance teams and theatre groups, and I’ve dealt with the similar feeling of knowing I’m not a genius at anything, and having to fight and work hard for the successes I got. Seeing a character I love so much go through those same struggles and coming out better for it all, especially in such stark contrast to the blazing speed of Hinata’s progression, just...meant a lot to me. And you put all those feelings into words so well!! This video was a really lovely breakdown of what a triumph this mini-arc for Tanaka was, and you got me tearing up from your analysis and the clips you put in 🥲 Really well done! When I was young a lot of people regarded me as smart or a genius and I also thought that I was, then I was introduced to people the same age as me or even younger that has the same or even higher skills or potential than me, right then I realized I was no genius but an average kid. I cried watching that scene because I think I can relate to Tanaka. I cried sooner and harder because of this video, maybe mostly because of how well you discussed everything, and how I was reminded that all my life, I've always been trying to be the "unbreakable", and "always reliable" guy. But yeah, I can't be like that all the time, and that I have to learn that I can rely on other people sometimes. Thank you

The thing I learned is, tanaka probably feels this way almost every game or practice they have. This type of depth won't happen in just one game. I theorize that this is how he feels until he makes his own moment per game. This is what pushes him to work harder and be that beacon of encouragement. In his mind everytime the team needs morale he probably says to himself "if someone like me can do it, you guys SHOULD be able to do it too." And quoting his last line "WE don't have time to look down." That's probably what's in his mind when he hypes the team up.

The way Tanaka always seemed to be high spirited or there to motivate anyone you wouldn’t have thought that he would have a moment of self doubt. I think that the way that at one point in life every one I mean everyone will have a moment where they aren’t at their best or have times where they doubt themselves is what really made anyone watching relate so much to Tanaka. Haikyuu has so many moments that make it great. I never would have thought an anime about Volleyball would become one of my favorites.

I remember liking Tanaka from the beggining: at first, it was actually because of his name (like this guy is called Ryunosuke, I can't even stay still saying it outloud) I loved him for his passion, for the steam and ash leaving his body with every move on the court, and for simply being kind He is like Rengoku to me, he set his heart ablaze

The best part about this is, he STILL IS that unshakeable guy. Everyone else's personal conflicts took in world days, weeks, or months to overcome. Tanaka had his entire conflict and resolution in under a second. To the rest of the team they had no idea it had happened, all they saw was Tanaka having an oddly slow start to the day. He wasn't playing too good, then BAM back in his stride and bringing his A game. That man is my rock. What he lacks in talent he makes up for in spirit. His special skill is morale maintenance.

07:41 one thing cool about that part is that the people who knew tanaka more intimately knew he would overcome it, kyoko and honoka, honoka knew him before all the contraptions we build for ourselves after teenage years, he knew the true most pure form of tanaka and knew he was overcome it, and kyoko knew him because he was always trying to get her attention, and well, kyoko is timid, but no cold, she is always watching and caring for her teamates people talk like tanaka and kyoko romance wasnt out of nothing, but it was just subtle, furodate is the master of pacing, and eficient use of time

I watched this scene again yesterday. I had a horrible day that I felt like I wasted and I was super, super low. I have many goals and aspirations that feel super daunting, especially after having failed time and again in the past 2 months to make any meaningful progress. I was, to put it simply, feeling like shit. But watching that scene again, watching tanaka run up those steps, it made me cry, instantly, no warning or even thought had occurred and I realized I was crying. I knew exactly how Tanaka was feeling in that moment, as I feel the same way. I'm not special, nor gifted in what I'm trying to achieve, and yet, why should I be looking down? What time do I have to look down and waste? And that moment, it broke me. Yet Tanaka also showed me the way forward. What if I'm not gifted? These steps aren't going to disappear on their own. I need to continue, taking each step at a time, slowly but surely making my way up that mountain. And then, I was ready. I took a moment and thought about all this, I smiled and I thought to myself, "Man, this show is so fucking good." And as we speak, I had this video in the background as I'm working on my goals. Thank you for this video, and thank you Tanaka for showing me the way.

its always fun to see other people's perspective. for me, tanaka was the person that i fell in love with first. when he got there with those gym keys i was done. and i always knew that when he was watching bokuto's inner spike that he was going to do it himself at some point. i dont know, i always loved him so so much. he wasn't the best of them, not as powerful as asahi and not as flashy as hinata, but he was a pretty solid stable player, and damn if that isn't valuable in itself. something pointed out at the shiratorizawa match on the 5th set was the players that had been there in court the entire time: daichi, asahi and tanaka. you don't really take tanaka into account because he wasnt slamming or saving spikes dramatically, but there he was, continuing to be just as good as he normally is. which is quite a feat considering how long that game was. seeing him getting a little bit depressed damn it hurt, there was no way he could be just as good as he always is ALL THE TIME. but then he had his own moment, and his older sister, who loves him dearly, was so proud watching him and i was tearing up too

best moments 1. tsukki's block was still the best (because it's labeled as "one block" by tsukki but ironically he really did a fist pump and shouted which looked breaking his character of being cold and sarcastic) 2. hinata's very high receive (this was defining moments that hinata got better, esp when he learn how to blend with the team on synchro tempo) 3. was probably oikawa's long toss from the other side of the net (he didn't labeled himself as the genius, he accepted kageyama being a genius and him always the challenger which really helped him evolve further but sadly we didn't see any of those) 4. tanaka's spike would probably be 4th for me tho.

There are many animes out there that are very good. Naruto is something was always very good and consistent with their story and choreography/art of fight scenes, One piece that is still yet to complete its story, and bleach which was very cool, Ghibili movies. However, Haikyu is an anime that will really heal you. There are many scenes in the series that is relatable and also uplifts you and inspire you. It is a kind of feeling that will leave you fall in love for a long time or save you from your depression. Its a series that portrays real life struggles and how the characters overcome them. It's not cliche, overwhelming, or anything like that. But it will definitely leave you crying witnessing those moments. That's why Haikyu is a series that will come out to be one of the best of the best and it already has a place in my heart. Merry Christmas, everyone.

Wow, what a beautiful video! Subscribed! For me too this lesson by Tanaka was unforgettable. Every now and then we may contemplate our achievements, abilities, or even existence. But that is not enough to give up, what if the pursuit of your dream, enjoyment, and happiness contains an endless number of steps, you should never give up, especially on the thing you love or enjoy the most. This should not be enough to get demotivated over or fall into the abyss, instead, this should be the source of motivation to strive forward, take new leaps and reach further heights. We often are not the best in our field, but that should not stop us from enjoying what we love. Average people are, after all, people. Our happiness, dreams, and hopes should not be hindered by our current ability, because the right amount of passion, hard work, and dedication might make us exemplary, and if not we certainly will become better humans than before.

Tanaka was my favourite from the moment I heard him speak. such a strong will, personality and attitude. He plays because he enjoys and always tries to go above and beyond, while being there for others. His interaction with the first years is incredible, his selfless act towards Hinata and Kageyama, his inspiring and motivating presence keeps everyone going. He was the one second year that didn't leave the team and the one player that was there always, be it in practice, in game or in life. He's not the brightest but he has his qualities. Tanaka has a drive and a smile that captivate. truly the best my admiration and love for this big guy only increased during this arc, having been in similar situations. we really get a glimpse into who Ryuu is and how human he is too! in a team of absolute beasts, Tanaka is one of those that get more attention that is, I would argue, the must human, from what we see. his will can shatter too, he also makes mistakes that drive him mad and yet he can calm down. he'll think and all the while do the most he can on court until he gets a good one in and starts to rebuild himself from there, without disturbing the others in anything other than a few points he can make back once he's heated up. his inner monolgue and the imagery the animators used made it sincere and i really got emotional. thank you, Tanaka! and season four was, for sure, the second years' season. it was all for them, if not for the obvious main characters and rivals. really liked the Kinnoshita attention
