When I learned about Isabella’s backstory, I was truly able to understand what she said when she stopped Norman and Emma the first time. I don’t necessarily think that becoming a mom was just for survival, it was also to show the future kids mercy. She knew that she wasn’t the first, and she would be far from the last, so the best thing she could do was give the children in her care all of the love and affection she had to offer so when their inevitable “adoption” day comes, they would have led lives with nothing but laughter and smiles. She even hums this to herself during shipment days because she isn’t allowed to cry.

What makes Isabella’s situation different from Emma’s is that Emma was never alone. Even though she had lost Norman, she still had Ray, Gilda and Don. In the manga, it seems that Isabella truly had no other friends other than Leslie and when he was gone, her entire support system collapsed. Isabella never wanted to become a Mama but she chose to be one because her love for Leslie and her desire to honor his memory were the only things that drove her to live.

Isabella’s character truly is tragic. When she climbed the wall and saw the cliff she immediately assumed escape was impossible. She then did anything and everything to only survive. Blocking out her emotions and sacrificing all she loved. The moment Emma escaped, she realized her assumption was false and she had truly given up all that was precious to her, but at the same time felt pride and happiness for the kids that escaped for doing what she could not. Truly a masterfully written character.

just finished the show yesterday. absolutely loved how the last episode gave us some flashbacks on her character. it almost made me do a whole 360 on how i feel about her, but you still gotta admit she can be crazy / psychotic

I have only seen the anime, so I don't the full story but from what I know, I think you have missed a crucial factor and that is, Isabella was trying to escape while Emma was trying to escape with everyone. Even Emma would have thought that it was impossible but since she had to do it for everybody, she couldn't back down. You will surprised to know what people can do as long as they are doing it for someone they like and care about, way more than they could ever do it for themselves.

it's not always true. I loved TPN with all my heart but the 12 episodes were definitely not perfect, they tried to jump scare us so much more which felt good in the first episode but got repetitive and boring in the latter ones, plus I don't like how the whole horror route they went. I especially disliked that they did Don and Glida so dirty like Mama didn't even notice Don stealing the key, the way they put out the escape from her secret room was sloppy and never gets explained in anime. I just wished they kept in things from manga, it's a good adaptation but they did change things. So TPN may have been a huge impact but it will die down just as quick because season 2 will have some major changes. No mean to hate, but the 100 episode animes generally are more build up and clear cut than seasonal anime :)
