Fun fact: baroque bows (basically the bows when the cello/violin/viola) were first made are curved slightly out like that ! If you look up a video of someone playing the viola de gamba it looked kinda like that. So it used to be more of like an actual bow shape!

Personally I think the Elgar sounds so much better with the chord split, it just sounds so epic, even if it’s only that way due to a limitation of the instrument
@melissaaboytes9977 Жыл бұрын
It’s not the only way you can play all four at once but based off of the piece and the type of energy you want to portray then you use different techniques it’s also just very hard not to crunch
@topsecret183711 ай бұрын
IMO it sort of represents a unique element to the cello to the same way one attributes unique playing styles to the guitar. And much of Elgar would sound very different if transposed and played on acoustic guitar. Arguably the introduction passage as played here wouldn’t sound out of place in a spaghetti western movie.
@O568011 ай бұрын
Obviously Elgar intended the split. There are recordings of him conducting the concerto and the split is always very pronounced.

For classical music like this, you'd write it as Csus2, the D is considered a "non-chord tone". The point here is that the "ninth" is understood as part of the melody and functions as a suspension as opposed to actually being part of the chord.

C9 would be a dominant 9 chord with a flat 7 for jazz, so this is Csus2
