From the BBC's 'Monitor' series the 1962 Ken Russell classic film about the world famous composer Sir Edward Elgar.
The Arena format provides some interesting information about the original film.
Sir Edward William Elgar, 1857 -1934. An English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed choral works, including The Dream of Gerontius, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.

If it hadn't been for his wife, Elgar would have not succeeded. He'd spent his life on the hills or by the river, throwing stones. When living at Craeg Lea in Malvern, she'd announce on a Monday that Bernard Shaw and his friends coming to hear his new composition he's going to compose during this week!! This was the only way he could pull himself together and compose!

It's strange that some of the greatest people are not appreciate until much later in life. Why is this? A composer of immense stature, love his music with a passion. xx

Yes, there could've been a whole documentary about just this aspect. He had to rely on the German people love of his music, to be recognised in his own country! I think it all had to do with his status in the society and the fact that he was self thought! The educated lot were jealous of this man's work and they thought, how dare he come in like that with his pieces, thinking he's some big composer, this son of a shopkeeper!!! What cruel, cruel world he was born into. 😢

It was Alice, who wrote the music scores for his pieces, separate for each instrument but at that time she was not given any credit whatsoever! We know this from Elgar's letters.

It doesn't get much better than this. This is an amazing documentary, amazingly filmed, acted, edited and written. It's success is due to all these factors but especially due to the black and white milieu which allowed Ken Russel to use both original and reconstructed footage in such a way that they become indistinguishable. The bringing of the cello concerto towards the end had to be one of the most moving in the film. Many thanks for uploadng.

Jayne Anne Strutt, thank you for sharing this. The depiction of Sir Edward's revenant in "Penda's Fen" was heart rending and no less so than the bio of this brilliant Ken Russel production. Much appreciated!

Very Beautiful Tribute from a most unexpected source Although I lived in Malvern for well over year in 90s could never make it to his birthplace as there was no public transport only hope this film was/is shown there so had I managed to visit then might have learnt of the existence of this gem 25 years ago instead of today but much better late than never Thank you for making it available

There have been several good documentaries about Elgar and his music, but this one escaped me until now - a positive side to AI and social media. Thanks for sharing.

At about 38:00 the music played is called " Land of Hope and Glory ", and it's the first of the Pomp and Circumstance " marches. How could this title be not mentioned, I'll never understand. Not everyone is so familiar with this!

Gosh, I remember watching this moving biopic upon its first showing on BBC. I must have been 16/17 at the time. Was it really that long ago? Over the years flashes of it have gone through my head, but I never expected to see it again in its entirety. Grateful thanks for posting it.

@@feline1104 What a sweet reply, Jayne. I've 'subscribed' to your channel, and look forward to future postings and notifications. Incidentally, in the same era, the Beeb did a similar programme on Vaughan Williams (one of Britain's very finest), and that has been repeated within recent years - but I wasn't quick enough to record it. Here's hoping... Brian x

Dora was certainly the love of his life, his muse. He said that out of all these people, she should have know the answer to the " Enigma" . Maybe that was Dora's favourite tune, not necessarily having anything to do with Elgar's work? Someone or something which never appears in a play, but nethertheless is the central character! Who or what was central to Elgar?

A little amendment to my post. I think he did love his wife but it was a different love than the love he had for Dora. She made him feel younger, mischievous and funny. She liked nice perfumes, dancing, theatre , dining in restaurants, all which was too frivolous to Alice. She was too no nonsense woman for him, and he had to constrain himself from being who he really was. His love of jokes, pranks and anagrams wasn't appreciated by Alice at all. It was so childish, she thought. She wanted to be married to a famous composer, to win her family over as they didn't approve of him, coming from a music shop owners family. Now, to own a shop is something to be proud of, but not those days! He felt so conscious of it too, and he was also a self thought composer too! People still discriminate everyone who's a self thought artist find it hard to exhibit their work. What a harsh word we're living in still today.☹️
