ngl the whole time i had in the back of my head "what if elh was a recurring chaser enemy that you couldn't beat up like the water wraith from pikmin 2", which would make sense as to why the character was scrapped because a chaser enemy might not mesh well with a game 85% comprised of narrow halls, unless luigi could hide somewhere via something like the crouching mode also not to mention, the way elh enters the set could be used anywhere, so hypothetically luigi could be exploring somewhere in the mansion and elh would surprise him by rising out of the ground, prompting luigi to have to run and hide it's a fun theory imo and would have made for a sick obstacle

I was thinking. maybe Elh could have been something similar to Nemesis and Mr. X from the Resident evil games. a very powerful enemy that would roam around the mansion and you had to try and avoid him to try and figure out a way to weaken him enough to suck him up.

I could see something like that tbh. The "wandering immortal monster that terrorizes the player" is a horror game trope, Nintendo even experimented with the idea in Metroid Fusion with the SA-X. It's not a stretch imo to suggest that they had at least consider having a monster like this in Luigi's Mansion, before ultimately scrapping the idea. Likely due to believing it would be too scary for young audiences.

Elh’s sidestep makes me think it could’ve been some kind of bodyblocking enemy. Maybe an early check for if Luigi had a certain element, where it would have an elemental core connecting its body parts that would have to be destroyed so Luigi could move on, and the reason it has multiple elemental effects is because it would have had three variants, one to be taken down by each element Luigi got as he unlocked the rest of the mansion, either that or it was an ice-only enemy and it had an effect for burning away. Probably got replaced because it was so big and clunky for the game’s tight rooms and halls, and they changed the concept to elementally charged doors, and gave the core shields to regular enemy variants later in development instead.

i think youre right on the money with this one. it would make so much sense regarding its animations. i could see it being bunched up on the floor or under the floor, and rising when luigi gets close. then side stepping to block luigi and smacking him backwards if he gets right up in its space.

Based on the aggressive behavior from Elh’s animations, the fact that he doesn’t get sucked up, and he can rise through the floor, I can see him as being a pursuer-type enemy. With his access to different elements, he could be fought at different points in the game until his driven off and comes back later in the game.

I feel that’s the whole point of his name even. ELement, “Elh”. Maybe he was just a test or placeholder to see how the elements in the game were handled Edit: I completely agree that he was indeed more then just a placeholder for elements my bad I worded that poorly. What I was meaning was possibly his name “Elh” was a placeholder that’s a direct hint towards his function and characteristics. I think he was a scrapped boss with elemental abilities that you had to use certain elements to combat him with(depending on what he was using). Either way, his model is really cool and it’s a bummer we’ll never get to see him fully realized. Sorry for the confusion everyone!

I think he was one of a few things. Either A. He was gonna be the bogmire fight as you have to two elemental medals needed at that point, B. What Boolossus replaced or my wild theory C. An early Van Gore. He seems to have paint brushes for arms and his twisted appearance seems to fit the name, and was possibly removed for being too dark

OK ANOTHER THEORY, based on how Elh would be pronounced it could signal to the “L” on Luigi’s hat, it could have been that, kinda like in Mario Sunshine, you would have to fight a distorted version of Luigi, who had the same move set as you plus others so you had a way too vacuum him up, but that’s just a theory, A GAME THEORY (no I’m not MatPat)

Just looking at him and how viscous he looks, and considering we haven’t found a water attack, I’m going to theorize/believe he was a water based ghost (due to his liquidy like design) who controlled the other two elements with his attacks but that’s also his weaknesss, and you’d have freeze him or possibly freeze him then use fire.

As someone who makes textures professionally, I can say Elh definitely doesn't have *no* texture. The way models are built in GameCube games, you can rebuild the texture based on where the vertices are. If you're willing to, you can contact me and send me that blender file you've shown, and I can rebuild the texture that might've been used for it.

He's modeled after a ghost called Kunekune (wriggle monster). He's typically put in trains in other video games. If that wasn't the intention ya got me but based on every other iteration I've seen Ehl is a dead ringer for Kunekune.

There's a good possibility. My guess is he was some sort of secret ghost but they couldn't figure out how to tie him in properly with their story. Or he was just too scary for nintendo so they didn't bother making his area or finishing him up.

the fact that Elh is a goo like monster, it is possible that he is a paint boss that could of been replaced by Vincent Van Gore in the artist studio. That lost textures could have been multiple colors that would of moved around. Though take this with a grain of salt.

I think him being a placeholder for bogmeyer is probably the safest bet. It doesn't help that they both look like they are liquid based, slime to be specific. And with the attacks and particles added on, I think what happened was either somebody looked at this and thought it would be too scary for Luigi's Mansion, and then changed it to bargmeyer, or thought the boss would probably be too hard, so they went with something easier. My theory (based on the ideas of others) Elh was a Mr.X like enemy that constantly roamed the Mansion. When we play this game, we feel a sense of calmness in the brightly lit hallways or rooms once they are completed. Knowing this, having Elh in the game constantly roaming the Mansion, potentially hiding around any corner, *would continuously leave a sense of dread and nervousness.* You were never truly safe in the Mansion. Once strong enough, you'd meet him in the cave outside of the Mansion where you finally defeat him there, grabbing the key that was once in his chest to fight King Boo. Since the cave was removed from the game, it would make sense why Elh would also be so underdeveloped.

With the attacks, he could have been some sort of lava/ice based enemy (along the lines of the theme of the Shiverburn Galaxy), hence the goopy lava like torso

Elh always reminded me of the Mamuta from Pikmin. It has some similar shapes, like the smooth wide 'head', and the long droopy fingerless hands. I can even detect a bit of shyness in its demeanor-- plus, of course, that pound attack is a dead ringer for the Mamuta's Pikmin-burying slam (which is actually decently helpful sometimes-- Mamuta, despite being a boss enemy, are gentle-natured). So maybe Elh isn't so bad :D ... Or maybe I just remembered the said-to-be malformed larval Mamuta enemy, The Smoky Progg... I mean, World of Light basically just made that thing a Goomba, so who cares anymore? Why do I care about anything?

Probably the most perplexing thing about elh is the name. Aside from "el" perhaps being short for "element" or "elemental", I can't think what the H could mean. While early 3D Nintendo games are a bit notorious for having fairly unhelpful or seemingly random names (Dark Link's model file in Ocarina of time is labeled as "torch", implying his model replaced that of a torch and they never bothered to change the name of the file) On top of that, it's clear he didn't get too far into development considering how little code and data is left relating to him in the game, along with missing textures. Elh has always intrigued me ever since his model was discovered, and it's kinda funny that, despite all the other discoveries and confirmation of long-speculated pieces of cut content, elh still remains just as perplexing as the day he was first discovered.

Regarding Elh's name, there's a very disturbing possibility that occurred to me right away that, although it's outlandish, I'm surprised nobody else has thrown out there: ELoHim. That is to say, he may be some designer's twisted conception of what God looks like.

My theory on Elh: If I remember correctly, there is an unused cave area (or something similar) that would be outside the mansion. Since only one part was finished, I'm assuming that Elh would have been the boss of the cave, but Nintendo scrapped it.

I got a theory about it. Perhaps the different particle effects could be a showcase that Elh was meant to be a miniboss of sorts that would be a reoccurring enemy that would have given luigi the ability to use the elements. Luigi could find the water medal first, then you fight Elh afterwards which would require you to use water and after beating it, it you get the Fire medal. Then later on it'd come at you as an ice element to prevent you from using water against, then after you beat it you could get access to the ice medal. Then late game you'd fight it using fire, water, and ice and you have to switch different elements do counter it's attack and finally catch it once and for all.

The way Elh moves is just so unsettling. I could see it being sort of a Nemesis/Mr. X stalker type enemy appearing when you least expect and hunting for Luigi.

I like to imagine Elh was like the Mr X Tyrant from Resident Evil 2, where he stalked the halls and you had to avoid him. Imagine how creepy that would be

I think the reason why Elh has only fire and ice related effects is because he is meant to be made of water himself, which is where his flowy movements and attack would come into place, completing the element trio

Judging by how he doesnt get sucked up like other ghosts, I think he may have roamed the mansion and hunt down luigi with no way to defeat him (the damaging animation couldve been a 1-second stun when you attack him)

I think Elh could have boo’s and ghosts could merge into each other making Elh which could mean why there is two elements (two element boo’s of fire and ice could mix and make the two element Elh) but it’s just me guessing

My idea is that Elh would have had several appearances, with different elemental powers, and would've blocked the way. Then you'd use whichever element matches him to pass.

On the note of Elh potentially being a scrapped area boss, perhaps it was originally going to be the Boss Ghost of Area 4 instead of Vincent Van Gore. That would explain its use of multiple elements, as you wouldn't have these by the end of Area 2 if he was the original version of Bogmire. Plus Van Gore's not really much of an area boss, the devs may have just been running out of time and scrapped Elh or its fight was just too difficult to create for some reason.
