Hello from Finland. Long time ago I used to live near to the Russian border and I visited Sortavala dozens of times in the 1990's and had many friends there. Of course I drove there via Ruskeala every time. My first trips to Sortavala were when it was the Soviet Union. Things have changed a lot since then. BTW, "Ruskeala" is Finnish and it can be translated as "brown village".

I live in Cherepovets, it's about the same place, according to our concepts, but we've already forgotten how it translates... "Mountain and tribe" is possible and so.

Well, the whole of Karelia WAS Finnish eighty years ago, and was taken from you by force from the Soviet Union (i.e., occupied), just like part of Ukraine is these days by the Russian Federation. - Maybe the Russians want to give it back to you some day?
@oh2mp
@oh2mp 5 ай бұрын
@@Jobst_van_Delft actually not the whole Karelia. A half of it has never been territory of Finland as it's quite big. Russians will never want to give that part that used to be Finland back. They have the attitude that what has one day been Russia, it will always be Russia. And in fact we Finns don't even want it back because it has been totally ruined in those decades after Russia stole it from us.

I am old enough to remember regularly traveling on steam trains, the smell and sounds will always stick with me. Also standing on a railway bridge when a train went through and you'd disappear into a cloud of steam. Wonderful.

Being from Canada i understand LOL. Reminds me when i traveled to Winnipeg in Frebruary, a few years back for the Festival du Voyageur. -25C, i enjoyed a hot bath back to my hotel every night. Kind of an equivalent to our Québec City winter carnival. Then i continued on to Vancouver. I'm quite used to travelling several days by train across Canada. It's not a steam train, but it can often be several hours late, sometimes 12 hours or more. Would love to do it in Russia someday. ❤

I think government should pay you and I think your videos will be an inspiration to everyone who watches your videos to travel even to the most remote places of Russia. Because at the same time you're showing us how beautiful and interesting of a place that could be to even think about traveling there and have a journey in real Russian winter. That's amazing! I appreciate that she avoids run-down places, which no doubt exist in Russia as they exist worldwide. Eli always makes me happy. In Canada, the winters are long, cold, wet, and days are short. And in our Beautiful British Columbia, we also have broken sidewalks, potholes in the streets and blocks of homeless people in hour major city. So Eli, please continue showing us beauty.

Nikki seems like a remarkable friend, my sister "Nikki" (she passed on)" sorrow " comes to mind every time you spoke his name, so I used the spelling of her name... The Russian architecture in many of the places "squeaky floors included" remind me of the small towns and cities I grew up in... Montana my home state is the fourth largest in the USA following Alaska, Texas and California In size of area... Montana's nick name is the Big Sky State and on a clear day the Sky seems to go on forever... Because of its size Montana's natural beauty is a mix of grass land, bad lands, Forest , the Rocky mountain range, rivers and lakes to name a few. "There is Gold in them there hills" LoL I won't even try to explain the agricultural and natural resources aspects of Montana... A short list is wild horses, Bison 🦬, grizzly bears, brown bears, wolves, Canada geese, eagles Hawks and falcons to name a few!!! Amber waves of grain 🌾... Love and Respect

This is such an interesting video. Steam trains are less efficient in many ways, but, travelling on a train like this which is maintained in period can "transport" the traveller back to an earlier time and place. There is almost no better way to experience history. I hope that the train in its present state is maintained so that many people can experience and learn about earlier times. Awesome vid Eli.

WOW. Another wonderful adventure! Your videos are so well done. I loved that beautiful train! I would like to visit Russia just to ride in that train. Our Amtrak trains in American pale in comparison. The food looks so delicious there. Here's a correction. When you wrote in the subtitle "blood warm," it should be spelled bloodworm for the animal. Looking forward to your next video!

What a great journey! I would have started by saying: It is a cold January morning in1876 and Eli wants a Karelian fish soup so she starts her journey north by catching the most advanced and warm steam train of the day heading in to the cold unknown forest Stopping by Babushka's homey apartment. Eli found a woven ornamental mat (lacy quilt) next to her mirror, it is called a "doily ". It was left there by grandma next to the heavy iron that can also be used for exercising and ironing; there is also an abacus for keeping track of your exercises... I guess by now we all know what is a doily, sometimes used for a table's decoration, and sometimes ladies wear fancy doilies on their heads going shopping after all it is still 1876.....

That was an amazing trip to a very beautiful place that most of us have never heard about before. Thanks for showing it to us. I think I could spend hours on that train too, just watching the snowy landscape go by
