He erased his memory to protect her and hope because he knew he couldn’t stay away from Hayley or Klaus or Hope if he remembered them. The second something happened or he missed them, he would come running back to them. Which would put hope at risk, so the only way he could protect them was forget them, which then in turn back fired on him. He didn’t break his vow. There was nothing he could’ve done, he was confused and didn’t understand who she was.
