One of my absolute favorite performances of this aria, not just for the amazing voice (that's a given), but also because of the acting, especially Elina's presence on stage and the way you /know/ who Carmen is just from watching the way Elina portrays her, the way she moves and smiles and watches.

Saw Carmen at the Gothenburg Opera, and it was pure delight. Let's put it this way, there was such intense chemistry between the leads that you don't get anything steamier with the clothes on... I'm pretty sure that this scene, and the subsequent Elina Garanca KZbin spiral that followed, is ultimately what led to the algorithm leading me to this channel, so I'm very excited to see this full video. (I also love Garanca's Flower Duet from Lakme with Netrebko because of how passionately she emotes during it. Snobby opera connoisseurs in the comments may claim there are performances with stronger sopranos, but I like that one because I think they complement each other nicely. And snobby commenters are also the worst, so who cares what they have to say.)

Opera is what brought me to this channel, and it's what keeps bringing me back. I love to hear the classical training frame popular music, as it can deepen an appreciation for the technical ability of performers who aren't typically lauded on that basis, but I was raised on classical and symphonic pops music with professional musician parents, and the greater draw for me will always be that genre of music. I mostly know symphonic works best, and when it comes to opera, I know more overtures than arias, but hearing a technical breakdown of what makes a performance great has really helped me to appreciate what I knew but did not understand, that being a world class singer is just as much hard work as mastering any other instrument. I will come back to watch whatever you pick, but my favorites will always be your analysis of opera. I'd also love to see some musical theater or operettas (some Gilbert and Sullivan or Sondheim in particular, though I'm not fussy!). Just keep up the amazing work educating and entertaining!

I have seen Elina Garanca as Carmen live, too, together with Jonas Kaufmann in Munic Opera. No fancy modern show, but the opera as intended with fitting costumes etc. I will never forget this experience. Two times during her performances she managed to find a singing frequency that resonated within my body. Her singing and acting was as good as it gets, an all-time great Carmen. Me and my company had quite our time then. A little later I have seen the performance in this video "live" as it was broadcast into cinemas. While I still can see and hear that she, again, did quite as good as back in Munic, to me nothing beats watching it live at the opera. If you have the opportunity, just go there, it´s worth it.
@Jaaric3 жыл бұрын
Oh man, I wish there was a recording of that production. I'd be very curious to see Garanca and Kaufmann perform Carmen together.
@MsTruebi3 жыл бұрын
@@Jaaric Kaufmann was in brilliant shape. Garanca did an all-time great performance, but she didn´t manage to blow him out of the water, which in itself is quite a feat by him. His is also a great actor with a stage presence to match hers. To my knowledge there is no recording.
@Jaaric3 жыл бұрын
@@MsTruebi What sort of Carmen and Jose did they play against each other? I've seen Garanca do both a stronger, more assertive Carmen (Met) as well as a... more youthful/playful, impetuous/romantic Carmen (Vienna) against Alagna. I've seen recordings of Kaufmann's Jose with Anna Caterina Antonacci, and Anita Rachvelishvili, both times I think he gave a... weaker, more unhinged Jose? (Not a bad thing at all!) I'm curious what style they went with when paired together.
@MsTruebi3 жыл бұрын
@@Jaaric Her Carmen in Munich was like the one in the MET, but I had the impression that she had more fun playing the role in Munich, especially when mocking Don Jose. Munich was several months before her MET debut with Carmen so it weas fresher to her. Also, she knew that the MET performance was live recorded worldwide. Maybe I´m biased, but I have the feeling that she was even better in this earlier performance. As for Kaufmann, he played it as you described and I think that´s the correct way to do. After all, Don Jose is a weak man, which is why Carmen can easily play with him, why she loses interest in him and why his way to react to that is murder.
@Jaaric3 жыл бұрын
@@MsTruebi Yeah, I think weak is a very valid way to play Jose, for the reasons you described! I could see that playing against Garanca's Met-ish Carmen... interesting... My favorite Carmen is the Vienna one, which I believe was later? She also seemed to be having a lot of fun there. An impetuous, romantic Carmen, though also sometimes thoughtless and very proud. Quite different from the Met, though both are excellent. Thanks for the replies. n.n I've always wondered what their joint Carmens were like.

While opera typically isn't my thing, I've started to appreciate it more because of your videos. I really loved your shout-out to mental health in the last Chris Cornell video. As someone who struggles with mental illness, it's nice to see people offering help, support, and resources out there. I have a lot of anxiety, to the point that I don't usually watch videos or news or, well, anything, because, well, I don't really know why. It makes me anxious and even though they're on a screen, new people are scary, and I'm not sure if I want to invest the half an hour or whatever in a video of someone who is putting on a persona, or being someone they're not on KZbin to score ad revenue and donations. Or maybe that's my pessimistic world view talking. But you've helped me get over that a bit with your kindness and authenticity. Charismatic voice, indeed. Plus, it's fun to watch you react with, for lack of a better way to describe it, child-like joy when something makes you happy or something unexpected happens (Like the Jinjer - Pisces video, LOL). So, thank you. For being a beacon of hope to people, and having such a great community.

Firstly let me say your channel is absolutely necessary for everyone who loves music! Congrats on your amazing work. I would like to ask you to consider an analysis of the legendary singer Maria Callas. Regards from Brazil!
@rticante3 жыл бұрын
The unfortunate thing for Callas is that the few online videos we get of her aren't of her peak-performance period but of the late/declining vocal slope in her career. And even the recordings (w/out video) of her peak performances, due to them being quite old, aren't the best in terms of audio quality. But yeah, it's mainly the lack in video material of her best performances that might lead to problems in analysing her the way Elizabeth usually does. And it's the same for lots of other great opera singers of the past.

My suggestion for a great classical piece of music would be my favourite aria of all, makes me cry every time I hear it: Maria Callas: La Mamma Morta (Andrea Chenier). Thank you for this channel, I really appreciate it.

I really enjoy your reactions and analysi ses of the opera singers. I have only started watching arias on you tube since covid. your analysis has helped me understand what opera is going on with this arias. I wish you would do a program on explaining what the operas are all about.

Yet another excellent analysis! You have helped me understand so much about singing and music over the past year I have been watching your videos. You usually inspire me to dig deeper and learn more about an artist or the material you cover. I felt that Elīna had so much stage presence here. But I also was very impressed with Kieth Miller and his performance of Zuniga. I discovered he had previously been a college football fullback for the Colorado Buffalos in the early 90s. His back story is quite interesting and inspiring. He had no previous musical training, but took a girlfriend to see “Phantom of the Opera” and fell in love with opera. He then taught HIMSELF to sing opera, even with his teammates teasing him for his newfound love of music. It would be interesting to hear you analyze some of his performances and discuss his education experience in music and opera.

I'm retired military. I'm glad that no Elina/Carmen ever approached me because I might have deserted to follow her no matter what the consequences of that action. She couldn't get into acting school and turned to opera instead.

Elizabeth, I enjoy listening to the broad range of music available on You Tube and other electronic venues. I also enjoy reaction videos of the genres to which you contribute so much. I have been a strong fan of classical & opera music for 60 years and of your reaction work for 4 to 8 years, however long you have been on You Tube. Your background in opera and your analytical strengths added to my understandings of music to the extent that I sometimes finish listening to you deconstruct and flesh out a reaction video and find my appreciation for increasing types of music, voice skills, and breathing expanding exponentionally. In response to your question in the last minute of this reaction, continue to include opera and classical items and take us to new depths of understandings as you have done so ably.

Well I'm a year late on this, but I am so happy to see you examine my favorite opera performance I have seen. I got to watch this live when it was simulcast to theaters and it immediately moved straight to the top of my list and has remained there since. I have seen videos of Garanca singing this in concert, and she is of course brilliant, but nothing matches seeing her inhabit the character so fully while performing during the show. I'll admit to a huge crush on Garanca in this role. I would certainly be poor, oblivious Zuniga in this scene, madly in love with Carmen, therefore dooming myself to never achieving her love in return. I would love to see you return to this opera at some point in the future to cover her performance of "Les tringles des sistres tintaient" where she both dances sings while being carried on her back or Teddy Tahu Rhodes fabulous "Votre Toast".

Yes! She’s one of my absolute Mezzo Soprano vocalists. She Carries herself beautifully on stage and has such a wonderful presence.
